"A New York panel voted to clear the way this morning for the construction of a mosque a few blocks from the Ground Zero site in Manhattan."

news.yahoo.com...

what is going on new nyc? world trade center gets taken down and a mosque goes up.

there are so many levels of wrong here and its got nothing to with with religious tolerance.

yeah not all islamic people are extremists- so straight up im not bashing the religion

this is a slap in the face to every single person whove lost friends and family on 9-11 and if afghanistan.

it is a FACT mosques are use to recruit the radicals
it is a FACT mosques are uses to funnel money to radical groups.

im posting this to see there is anyone out there that has problems with this.

this has nothing to do with religious freedoms this is a about giving the extremists a place so close to hallowed ground.

It is inappropriate.

I can only guess that the powers involved in New York feel that this will act as a sign to Islam that they and the people of that city, are not the enemy.

But this fails to take into account the differences in cultures. We marginally view it as placating and a signal of peace, but what about those int he Middle East that follow a radical path?

Will they view it as a peace making gesture or instead choose to look at it as a sign of victory over the U.S.?

This move may well increase the future number of attacks, because the terrorist actions are being rewarded.

Why not keep doing what works?

There are quite a few threads already here at ATS about the Islamic center in lower Manhattan, from varying angles of the story.

This ruling stopped an attempt by those opposed, like you are, to get the building declared a historical site thinking that it would prevent it's use by the people who bought the building and land.

To correct this story, the Anti-Defamation League did NOT come out in opposition to the "mosque." People have simply interpreted it that way. Thread here.

In addition Gingrich is currently attempting to have ground zero declared a battlefield in another attempt to stop it. Thread here.

Both these issues are recent threads here.

Hope that helps.

If you don't want to bash the religion I will. It is a much more than a religion. It is a complete political system bent of world domination. Just becasue most of its adherents jus want to get on with their lives doesn't mean the leaders aren't pushing for a new caliphate that takes in the world. We in the west have no frame of reference for it. Even when the Catholic church was a its height of power there was still a counter balance of secular authority. In fact the church initially derived its power from the Emperor Constantine.

It's a complicated and, for some, very emotional subject that's gone viral. NYC is and always has been a multicultural town. They suffered the attack and they are deciding the fate of this Islamic center. As it should be.

its not that simple for the fact people have friends and relatives in nyc that live elsewhere- same with afghanistan. this decision affects millions.

it boils down to this just because you can do a thing doesnt mean you should do a thing.

and that mosque will be used agianst us believe or not it will.

i should have checked out the other threads before making this. im sorry

any mod feel free to close this one.

How is building a cultural center and church a slap at anyone?

it is a FACT mosques are use to recruit the radicals
it is a FACT mosques are uses to funnel money to radical groups.

And how did you determine this is going to be the case with this mosque?

This thread should not be closed as the OP is taking the topic on the opposing side of the mosque.

This thread is attracting others to speak up.

I think there should be a lot of questions asked!

"Lazio attended Tuesday's hearing, saying he still had questions about funding sources and saying the national debate over the mosque had nothing to do with religion.

He said: "It's about this particular mosque called the Cordoba Mosque. It's about being at ground zero. It's about being spearheaded by an imam who has associated himself with radical Islamic causes and has made comments that should chill every single American, frankly."

do you think "radicals" are recruited by someone going knocking on every door at home?

NO.......

a mosque is just like any other social networking it provides a place of people with common beleifs to meet and exchange ideals.

you can not sit there and tell me it wont be.

for instance look at ats it provides a place for people to meet and exchange ideals and it feeds the left wingers and the right wingers equally.

there are dangerous people here on ats and if you think there isnt take a good look at the hate on here.

no offense to ats.

If that is the case then it shouldn't matter where it is built then, right?

Where is the money coming from? Why is imam avoiding that question?

Too many questions.

The Islamic community center, as the article referenced in the OP stated, is near not at ground zero.

The organization planning the center is called the Cordoba House or Cordoba Iniaitive, not the Cordoba Mosque. The Cordoba Mosque is in Spain.

Thank you for pointing that out, I was trying to show that questions aren't being answered.

I will look up a video that speaks of the mosque in question in NY to show imam avoids the question of where the money is coming from.

"Egg"sactly Mr. Intrepid

To me, this seems silly.

Now I have no idea where the funding is coming from, I have no idea where the funding they get will be going to, but I can be 95% sure that this place will have to dot every I and cross every T.

If this building is going to be that evil, that unbearable,it will be found out soon enough.

and lets leave the tired "It lets them terrorists win" line behind. Most, if not all "over there" have no clue whats going on in little ol' NYC.

People have a problem with this because for some reason it threatens their "ideals". Let it go.

The funding for the Islamic center is coming from private sources, much like the funding for a church or synagogue might. Should there be any illegal activity surrounding those sources, law enforcement would get involved.

The land the center is to be built on is land the center is purchasing, just like any purchase of any land in NYC is made. Aside from the landmark issues, it has also been determined that there are no local zoning conflicts, not an easy feat in NYC.

The Islamic center is not even in the line of sight of ground zero.

Yep,
They destroy an icon and murder innocents. Then they rub salt in the wound and smile when the victims wince.

Then the apologists attack the ones who are evil enough to be offended by the whole sick joke that this has all become.

If the someone bought Mecca and bulldozed it to put up a McDonalds would that be ok too?

hes been asked where the funding is comming from but he isnt speaking up in any detail to any degree.

but he himself doesnt have the millions for it so you can be sure there are investors.

but who are the investors? what are their ties?

noone can answer those questions but that guy and he isnt talking and if he isnt talking there is a reason for it.

Opinion:

The Ground Zero mosque has every right to exist in this location. If this were a Church or a Synagogue there would not be so much hell being raised.

It shows that the ignorance and intolerance coming from most on the Right and from you, the OP, is staggering. Considering that the building was legally given the green light you are complaining on a moral basis.

All this complaining implies is that you categorize an entire group of people based upon the actions of a radical few. It is ignorance, egotism, Islamophobia and intolerance combined into an argument which you, OP, and they, other Islamaphobics, justify by using 9/11 as your excuse.
