Not a paedophile - Are you affected

www.iol.co.za

Nearly half of men would be too scared to help a child in need because they fear being branded a paedophile, a survey has found.

Forty-four per cent would be wary of coming to the aid of youngsters in their neighborhood in case they were suspected of attempting to abduct them.

And almost a third of both men and women would be reluctant to help because they fear the child would be abusive.

Such fears are behind a weakening of community spirit that has left children increasingly isolated, and more likely to stay indoors, according to the findings.

A very interesting article. I must admit I have not thought about this in detail until now.

Thinking back I can remember a number of occasions where I was walking past children that are been cute or been funny and not looking at them or smiling at them due to the fact that the parents might look at you funny "or at least you might think they will if you give a reaction to the kids"

Its truly sad how a few sick individuals have ruined the way kids have to grow up these days.

Crazy times we live in, huh. People are very paranoid about everyone, even if others mean no harm. On the other hand, there are some real crazies out there, waiting to pounce on innocent kids.

I also wonder about the difference between men and women in these situations. I think most of us would be more suspecting of men around children than women, even though this seems unfair.

This makes me kind of sad about the world my children will grow up in.

Think in some situations both men and women are affected equally, for example here is a bit of a quote from the article

"Children are experiencing a very different childhood to previous generations, with freedom curtailed, and safety concerns exacerbated," the report said. Some parents were worried their neighbours would 'judge' them if they left their children to play in the street unsupervised. Others felt their children might 'annoy' neighbours, for example by playing ball games or using chalk to draw on the pavement. However, these activities were considered acceptable a generation ago, according to the research.

A few years ago I used to work as a volunteer taking young kids from inner city London on holidays to to the countryside. We had to be very careful with how we interacted with the kids. The only real contact we could have was when we were forced to break up fights between the kids, apart from that physical contact was pretty much not allowed. To me it was sad that you couldn't put your arm around a kid who was missing their parents or upset for any other reason.

You would have these kids wanting to hold your hand as we walked around a theme park and you would have to keep making excuses or stopping to do your shoe laces. It's a shame we have come to this state.

We did have to be very careful, some of these kids we were taking away were pretty savvy and streetwise and would have no qualms in calling people a "paedo" just for the fun of it.

I understood why we had these strict rules as in the past the charity had one of it's volunteers fondle a child while giving them a piggy back. It's a very difficult area and difficult to find a balance.

It`s not a difficult area at all. It`s another illusion brought to you by all the best sponsers. Everything that`s wrong in our society can be boiled down to Divide And Conquer tactics. The motivation is irrelevant, there are too many obvious reasons to want to keep us all confused. We are always afraid of everything. People look at their neighbor and think, "Look at him, he looks like a child molester." But they never take the time to investigate by trying to get to know their neighbors. They just write off the person and say "Why take a chance?" And so communities are left vulnerable without a united people. This allows more secrets to be kept and for the real child molestors to get away with it better. Back in my old neighborhood, we could be 5 blocks away at the park and still be under the watchful eyes of friends of our parents. The whole town knew eachother almost. A lot of the time we would have big barbeques, picnics, or home cooked dinners which saved us all a ton of money. And the food was great because the best cooks would be the ones attending to the details of the food. It`s a lot cheaper and a lot more fun to prepare meals together even if your only splitting it with one other family. And if there were any weirdos in town we all knew who they were. Communicating leads to information being exchanged. How much information do you have on your neighborhood? Have we been tricked into not trusting eachother? Furthermore, I believe there are certain trends in society that are manufactured in order to increase and intensify existing cases of pedophilia. It`s pretty obvious but just look at things like Hannah Montana, at night she "transforms" basically into a whore. And then once that becomes acceptable, they decide to bring miley cyrus` little sis into their game. Thankfully someone came to their senses and criticized them for that one, but I doubt it will last long. She will turn 13 & they will say shes a teenager so its natural to want to be a whore. And also look at the hormones pumped into our meat supply. I can`t say for sure but I`ve heard that these growth hormones can make puberty happen sooner. So then you have 13 year olds who have not only had physical changes but they feel the cravings and give off the pheromones of a 16 or 17 year old. Like I said, I don`t know if it`s true, but it would be interesting if it was. I mean, we take our kids to mcdonalds as a reward because we love them , not to rob them of their childhood.

I'm sorry if its that bad over there. I thought we had it bad, but common sense is still present, sadly combined with some idiotic laws, but common sense nevertheless.

I cannot imagine a society where adults are afraid to help kids for the reason of being labeled pedophile. Of course as long as the kid is not asking for help on going to toilet / showering

Then again, here people have pedobear paraphenilia just as a social hysteria statement. And everyone who recognizes the logo, gets the joke. Like the video where a pedobear takes a girl and carries her a bit at some lan (just like any mascott might do). That is funny, not worth the cops.

AFAIK this is not from South Africa, the research was done by ICM survey, which is based in the UK. They also mention England in the article.

Even though this survey was done in the UK I would not be surprised if the results were similar around the world.

wow, a sad one
I reminds me of that article where parents brought their kids for camping and took pictures and the pharmacy guy who was developping the pics called the cops saying it's child pornography.

Are we witnessing the extinction of parenthood?

This is pretty close to the bone so dont watch if your easily offended. But it is a great satirical look at the hysteria surrounding Paedophilia.

If a child was in real danger, I wouldn't give a damn about what people thought of me if I helped. Oh, and I happily smile at kids on the street - being smiled at helps them grow up happy, right?

You'd need to be a real spineless coward not to do that. Are half of men spineless cowards? God help me if they are.

As for kids playing outside, well a bit of fresh air won't hurt. Personally I think that generation is just lazy 'cos of TV, mobile phones and computers, etc.

Agreed, one should help a child in need but picture the following scenario. We all seen this scenario in the movies before... "Maybe that is were we get this bad image from, and think its bad to help out"

Child is crying cause he lost his mommy,
Mommy is searching frantically for her child,
You see child and decide to help by taking him to security.

Mommy in her panicky state see's you with child and confronts you leaving you looking like an @$$ in front of everyone, or even worse, mommy hits you cause she thought you were abducting her child.

I would help a child in need, though if there was a women around i would 1st wait to see if she helps or i would try and get another person involved to help out.

Unfortunately more than half of the population as a whole are cowards IMO

I remember my mum reading a similar article to this years ago when I was a teen, and she said 'I don't care what you think people are going to say about you, if you see a child who needs help you do it!'

Stuck with me, however what I would most likely do is find someone else to help aswell.

I would also say don't be afraid to tell kids off who are misbehaving in public either, something which people seem to be afraid to do. I recently had to chase a load of kids who booted a football at my window nearly breaking it.

I heard the bang and I was down the hall in another room. I certainly don't have any money to fix it, and it would take my landlord a fornight to do it. So I ran after them and grabbed the ball and hoofed it over a fence into a field, and told them not to do it again

What was funny was that my girlfriend was in the train station a few days later and overheard some people talking about a crazy Irish guy who ran after some kids then kicked their ball away. Apparently not much happens in this town.

I couldn't agree more. I am female but I would do the same thing by getting another person to help.

I don't know how I feel about the article..yes it's a sad state of affairs but at the same time there are so many sicko's out there it's very hard to know who the good guys vs. the bad guys are. Just recently in the area I live in, a sheriff, city counsel member, school board member, and several cops and several teachers were convicted of either sex with minors or child porn. I mean aren't these the people that kids and adults should be trusting? I have to say I am a paranoid parent. I'm just NOT going to take any chances with my two daughters. I know I am a helicopter mommy and I get involved in every single thing they do. Once they are a bit older I will ease up some but for now I don't let them roam the neighborhood or go anywhere with anyone else.

I have stuck to the same motto for 15 yrs--"TRUST NO ONE".

Awesome! Pure win in this video.

People have dirty minds. It's natural. That doesn't have to mean everything everyone does is meant to be dirty

kids are over-rated. i don't get this whole "children are so innocent!" thing. most kids i know can be just as manipulative, mean spirited, and ugly as adults.

send them back to the factories, i say.

I agree with most of the other posters in that being a man myself I would be more wary about helping a child. I think its a gender thing....

I also agree with one of the other posters that the spread of fear has worked...Its perfect big brother, neighbor's spy on neighbor's etc...

Also.. I couldn't resist in linking to the brilliant Brass Eye Pedophile special -

I was faced with something similar a few years back. I was out in my front yard and heard crying, yelling and the sound of a child running.

A the little dog of one of the neighbor's kid's had gotten away and was running down the street. The little girl (about 8 or 9 ) was running after it, crying her eyes out and yelling for it to stop and come back.

My fist instinct and thought was - "Awww - I'd better help that poor little girl get her dog back..."

Then I thought, "Frogs - if someone sees a crying little girl running down the street - and your big butt running after her it will look *REALLY* bad.."

So, I went the opposite direction, to the neighbor's house and told them their little dog was running down the street - with their little girl in hot pursuit and she was crying her eyes out..

Now in the time I did that I could have collected both dog and girl and brought them safely back home. But, I didn't because of fear of how bad it would look chasing after them..
