Leaked war files no surprise to Afghans

Afghan defence minister Abdul Rahim Wardak has played down the fallout from the Wikileaks scandal, saying the information released was "not a big surprise".

"Actually for us Afghans, and especially some of us dealing with intelligence, we knew it all along," he said during a visit to Malaysia on Monday.

"For us it was not a big surprise because we were sharing intelligence. We were aware of the size of the activities and support of the Taliban," he said.

I cannot say I'm not surprised either. The Afghans are now coming out saying they knew the United States was supporting the Taliban. At what point, when others thought our actions were supporting the Taliban did people in our own military turn a blind eye to the possibility? Maybe following the status quo and supporting without questioning authority will be the downfall of modern society.

Afghans had a hunch, but didn't have the information to prove it. We had a hunch, but didn't have the information to prove it. Now we all have the information to prove it, and our leaders deny it. So nothing happens? We all bow our heads in submission to the authority that lies to our faces, destroys peace, and does so in the name of making peace?!
