The NOAA's National Climate Extremes Committee says the hailstone found in the town of Vivian on July 23 measures 8 inches in diameter and weighs 1 pound, 15 ounces. The committee says the South Dakota ice chunk breaks records set by hailstones discovered in Nebraska and Kansas.

A hailstone weighing almost a kilo that fell in the state of South Dakota has been confirmed as the largest ever recovered in the USA. According to the National Weather Service, the hailstone that landed in the town of Vivian eclipsed previous record-setters in Nebraska in 2003 and Kansas in 1970.

That's a big chunk of ice. But the video is confusing. It shows a hole in a roof and a small crater in the ground, why? Did it smash through a roof or did it land on the ground outside? Surely there must be a better video than this one?

The quality of American houses leaves a lot to be desired . If that had hit an English house it would have just broken one tile.

It was a hail storm. One of the hailstones broke the world record. The rest were very large.

Now ain't that the truth. Cardboard boxes held up with toothpicks, wrapped in plastic, and with an interior coating of paper machete... but don't forget the beautiful paint job, crown moulding, and fancy looking furnishings.

...sorry off topic, disgruntled US carpenter,
