They are only doing this to extend their patent & get more money the bastards, not to save kids.

www.nypost.com...

Pfizer plans to sell a children's form of Viagra to treat a rare lung disorder as a humanitarian gesture -- in exchange for getting a six-month extension of its patent on the adult version.

The Food and Drug Administration approached Pfizer about using its drug to treat a lung ailment that affects about 600 kids a year.

Viagra, which modifies blood flows, could reduce unusually high blood pressure in a child's lungs, or pulmonary arterial hypertension. Symptoms include dizziness, chest pain and fatigue.

A panel of FDA advisers will determine on Thursday whether to green light the kid's version.

If Pfizer's drug meets FDA requirements for children's treatment, Pfizer would get an extra six months of exclusive Viagra sales without generic competition. Viagra sales in 2009 were $1.89 billion. Its patents expire in 2012.

This is actually what viagra was originally made and used for, to treat breathing and lung problems in newborns and premies.

The other heavily advertised effects are actually a side effect from what I understand.

This says tons:

The FDA began asking Pfizer in 2001 to develop ways to use Viagra to treat children suffering from the lung ailment, but the pool of just 600 patients offered limited revenue opportunities. Source

As long as the end result is saving children, they could be doing it for any reason they like.

Hmmm... So this means I should stop using my Viagra to get freaky with my girlfriend and start using it improve my marathon times???

Pretty clever of them to 'remember' that it has his this 'extra' use soon before the patant expires...

I don't know about you, but I wouldn't want to run a marathon with a full blown erection.

As for using Viagra to improve marathon running time.....and this is not meant to be facetious.....but......running with an erection can hurt. I had an experience with a young lady. In the morning, the effects of the Viagra just wouldn't wear off. I needed some sleep. Relax. I thought going jogging would clear out my system. Get the Viagral (is that a word?) effects out of my system. I discovered that the idea just wouldn't work. Not only running with an erection being painful, people look at you oddly.

This is part of the Orphan Drug Act, it's not a new deal with the creators of sildenafil/Viagra. The government will give extra patent time to any drug company that creates an effective therapy for a rare disease, which the company won't see much (if any) profit from. The extended patent time is meant to make up for the profit lost creating that new drug.

Why did it take so long for the end result when as "darkelf" points out.

If they aren't bastards, why didn't they do this in 2001 when first approached by the FDA. When it comes to the "end result" what about the kids that died in the intervening years, Is it ok to tell their families that profits are more important than their kids lives, or is it 600 kids a year are statistically low numbers, hence it doesn't matter.

Like I said, I don't care why they're doing it. I just care that it gets done. You're acting as if it's news that corporations only look out for their bottom line.

I pity you, that you don't care about the children that have died because of heartless bastard corporations since 2001.

I pity you.

Here is where I am confused, it was originally formulated to treat children, they are currently using it in lower doses under a different name to treat children..........so why do they need to find a whole new formulation?

Pharmacokinetics/dynamics are always different in children. You have to take into account that infants (the main target of the new therapy) don't have full liver function and have slightly altered blood chemistry, which requires additional considerations as far as drug pH and solubility.

Yes, because saying that I'm pleased that profit has finally motivated an organisation which exists solely to maximise profit (which is what a corporation is) to save the lives of children is the same as saying "I don't care about children that have died previously".

Wait. That's not the same thing at all.

There is already a drug made with Sildenafil with the name Revatio that is formulated for children with this condition.

I really do not see the point of all of all the hand wringing, they have proven the drug safe and well tolerated as of several years ago and it is being used currently and even has a brand name for pediatric use.

Children and infants are different. The exact treatment they are looking for, presumably, is a safer formulation for the treatment of pulmonary ateriovenous fistula in infants. Revatio has been associated with a slightly elevated risk of cerebral hemorrhage in infants, so now the government is using the Orphan Drug Act to try to get Pfizer to make a safer version.

Ok, "Pfizer" and "humanitarian" don't belong in the same sentence. "Pfizer" and "toxic drugs," now that is the sentence that makes sense. I've seen too much destruction with medications to trust these companies.

Help children my ass. They want to generate some more income.

"Yes, ax murderer, we would like you to come babysit our kids. Yes, bring the bloody ax, we trust you, even though you've just mangled a number of people. Oh, we forgive and forget easily. We're just happy go lucky like that, ha ha."

Well...they ARE a private corporation. Their purpose is to make a profit. No one is requiring you to use their products.

You can bank on that. I don't use their products. Yes, people are free to make income, nothing wrong with making money. But, it doesn't excuse the fact that these companies harm millions. They profit on the suffering of others. Pfizer has no intention of really healing you or I. The longer they can "manage" your symptoms, the more profitable it is to them.

Pfizer will never tell you to tackle your heart disease with Vitamin C. No, what they will do is have you moping around, dizzy, with nausea, chills, body ache, and the chance for heart failure because of their "miracle" medications. They can't make their massive profits by telling you how to really heal yourself, no they have to drag some people into financial ruin with their "help," to add to the suffering. The people like Pfizer are the companies that have ruined the health care system.
