White House pushes for warrantless access to Internet records

rawstory.com

The White House has asked Congress to make it possible for the FBI to demand that Internet service providers turn over customers' records in cases involving terrorism or other intelligence issues without first obtaining a court order.
......
The proposed amendment would add the phrase "electronic communication transactional records" to the list in order to include the recipients of emails and when they were sent and received -- though not their content. It might also cover web browsing history.

"Meet the new boss, same as the old boss" ???

This is the latest push for more secret snooping in the name of security.

Previously ISP providers were only required to give information such as might be found on a bill. name, address, length of service, and toll billing records.

The addition of "transactional records" could include browser history, facebook friend requests, maybe tweets, emails, etc.

The white house says it is to prevent "confusion" on the part of ISP's.

Uh-huh. The only kind of confusion they want to prevent is any confusion about illusions privacy.

Let's see if the ACLU has the stones to stand up to Obama like they stood up to Bush. Previously, any invasion of accounts primarily applied to international activity, yet, this new move opens the door to everything that may be deemed suspect.

No court issued warrant! Isn't that convenient.

We are losing our grip faster than anyone ever imagined at the hands of this administration. We will see more of this as we get closer to midterms and to 2012 election. The administration is in panic mode and is doing the exact opposite of what the public wants.

My guess is that "Other intelligence issues" = "anything we want to know, anytime we want to know it."
