O.K. so here's the story..

Last Monday(July 19th) my boss did not show up for work, no big deal, it happens on Mondays sometimes, we all joked about Brown bottle flu, hookers , you name it..was funny at the time..

he did call in around 10 am said he was sick..sounded like crap too..

Tuesday gets here and no Boss...he calls in around 10 am and say's he's still sick..

Wednesday gets here Boss..

Thurs gets here no call no i call him..we talk for a while and he sounds fine....sorta....he keeps telling me he just feels i say, are you actually sick?

he says just needed some time off..o.k.. whatever.. call no one can get a hold of him..

Monday gets here(July 26 now)no call no show...

Tues..same thing..and he won't answer his phone..

Wednesday and now I'm starting to think something just aint right here..

did he he fired i go to the big boss and he says..

The sheriff's office called earlier and he is in jail on a DUI,

and then if i find out that he called one of the secretaries earlier that morning from jail and he was talking about ghosts and whales and all kind of weird stuff to her..
(that is what she said he said)

and wanted to know if he still had a job...

So I'm thinking WTF? right?

Then today..Thurs/July/29...

I find out he is in a psychiatric hospital because he lost his mind..

totally...he knows where he is and who he is but..

he keeps speaking gibberish they say about whales mostly..

So I ask you all..why would a guy who was doing great at work fall apart like that..

we were friends and talked all the time..

he even worked out in the field with me sometimes..

I don't think he was doing any drugs, but i cannot swear to it ..

but i never saw him om anything..

Any thoughts or have any of you seen this too with normal seeming people you know...

Is he near the Gulf? Could it be related to the Oil Spill?

We had an incident at work this week also. One of our guys is now in a center for treatment.

THe country is in some deep stress right now. Combine the stress of the oil spill and environment issues, with the economy, and the over prescription of anti-depressants, and you get people on the verge of psychotic breaks day by day.

The whole country is on a tight rope, and I can't believe we are still moving forward. Take care of your family, and your coworkers, because it could happen to anybody.

This happens. I had one of my colleagues send an email throughout the company - worldwide! - stating that he had spent the morning talking to God and he told him to come to work and spread his word etc... was extremely disturbing to read and quite anti-Semitic in parts... Luckily our company is very health oriented and he was taken to hospital and had a few months of intense therapy.

He's now returned to work on a part-time basis and is doing much better... Who knows why these things happen, some people just can't cope with work/life and their behaviour becomes antisocial and odd to us whereas to them it may seem perfectly normal.

I hope your colleague receives some assistance with whatever it is he's having trouble coping with.

I have a friend that just "snapped" like that. She was in high school taking all accelerated classes. One night she went to a basketball game. She felt stressed from the noise and the chaos of the game. That night she woke up screaming. She did not know who she was or where she was. She spent two years in a state psychiatric hospital. After she got out she did fine. That was over 30 years ago.

Hopefully, they will figure out what is going on and get him fixed real quick.

Maybe he's bi-polar and self medicated with alchohol.

I have known people with the illness, who after being in the manic phase, crash and burn to the depressed side for days.

Also, even though you say he was a friend to you, you can't possibly know everything that goes on in his life. Perhaps he's had a personal catastrophy.

I do have to say though, that I think it was wrong of the big boss to tell you that the guy had a DUI. That is pretty personal, and, he had no business telling you that. It should have been left up to your friend to do that, when he is ready. As for that secretary that told you the other things about him? Her butt oughta be canned!

Unsuspecting people do go off the deep end sometimes but those around them usually see clues. Whales - interesting. If they allowed visitors perhaps he could use a friend right now. Do you think there was a family problem and maybe he hit the sauce too hard?

Hope he is better and back to work soon.

Probably more common than you would think. I'm sure there are quite a few people who are a just a few degrees from going off the deep end. Some people have a very hard time coping with things in general and let them compound.

Take your average day for example and add these - Get behind a crappy driver, Hit every stop light, Restaurant messes up your order, Cashier is a little rude to you, Spill your drink on your nice clean shirt, Get a flat tire, Get chewed out by your boss, Find out someone in your family is sick, An unexpected expense pops up, etc. etc. etc.

All of these things on their own are fairly trivial, easy to deal with. For most people they're shortly out of your mind when done with. Some however let these things get to them, slowly, over months and months. You let little things pile up over time you will eventually hit a breaking point. Some people's breaking points are lower than others and you have something like this happen.

Hope your boss can get the help he needs. When someone finally snaps it's never a good thing.
