I think this is not a bad idea. It would be better if it was voluntary, although i can see making it mandatory for anyone on welfare, unemployment. I could see a scenario where the government offered extensive training programs or college and in return for being taught a skill you would need to put that skill to work for government at a fair wage for a few years. If such a program existed then I think anyone should be able to enter. It is already a program for the military.

While such a program would be expensive, it could mean cost savings down the road. Less unemployment and welfare, and also a government run in the majority by lower paid, non career workers. Ultimately it would cut government wages by about 50% and eliminate much pension funding, etc. If run properly, such a program could pay for itself through savings over time.

Such a solution would actually be quite capitalistic as an end result. Once the government finishes training and they serve their few years, the participants would be forced into the capitalistic economy. With such a highly skilled workforce we should be able to count on a solid and adaptive, economy. I think one of government responsibilities is to help prepare it's citizens to participate properly in the economy that he country has adapted. Such a program would meet that standard.

I find it quite funny to read all the freak outs and saying how Obama is like Hitler to require just 2 years of government service (if this is real and i would bet the farm it isnt like most things i have read on here). Israel requires 8 years if i remember correctly. I mean if this real then i see this as something great. Show some dang patriotism people! If this country is soo bad and you hate it soo much then move away, no one will miss you!
I know this country isn't perfect by a long shot, but its all we have and a lot of people have died for our flag! I wouldn't mind dying for it either! I have put in 4 years already and if i have to do another 2 then i will!

I'm sorry, what exactly is Obama's plan? Do you know? Does anybody? Really? Oh, I take it, you are reffering to the ten's of billions of dollars, he's taken from the working American people to "save" their jobs. Job creation: Thousands. Jobs saved: Millions! Please. Truly tell me though: What is Obama's plan? I want it spelled out for me, in actual words that are comprehesable. Seriously looking forward to your reply. P.S. I want examples, video, anything you can give me, to prove there is ANY PLAN PERIOD. Obama like ALL politicians are in it for themselves, not you. You say you are retired, yet after all these years you still trust your polititians?

I already did that! Last post on page 12. You can actually hear the words spilling from Obama's mouth!

I agree. I did 4 years in the Army but it was my choice. Mandatory anything is un-american in my eyes. Nobody should be forced to do anything against their will.

It's a socialist idea, very popular in Nazi Germany and Soviet Russa. I don't think it will go over very well in America.

It won't pass. In previous attempts he lost 402-2 with him voting against his own bill. (2003) It's a lost cause, there are too many anti -military congressmen who won't vote for this nonsense.

Oh and according to him the Military is entirely composed of minorities and poor. Those who served know better. Rangle is an idiot.

I think it became clear to Obama that there was no way much of what he wanted could actually be done. I think if Obama could simple dictate what he wanted done this country would be a better place. Probably the same for Bush, etc. The problem is that nothing can get done without tremendus compromise. By the time they are done compromising no real reform is actually enacted. I can't believe anyone votes for any life-long poiltician. They are the ones responsible for our problems. I can't think of one reform in my lifetime that has actually benefited society. By either party.

Rangel is not serious with this bill He always throws in the mandatory part so that there is no chance such a program gets considered.

Thank you,

The last post on the page easily get's skipped. I work 70 hours per week. I pay my taxes (in my opinion, far too much). I hire people every chance I get. Though I also speak out against any, slave based government idea, any chance I get. I definitely feel I serve my country well.

Perhaps its time to eliminate this corrupt cadre of usurpers and form a new congress sans the ubiquitous lawyers and Harvard grads.Any good ideas? By the way, they should be reminded of the difficulties experienced with Randy Weaver! If this bill should ever pass I fell it would be necessary to form my own homeland security force. Tread lightly DC

You really believe that if either Obama or Bush had "dictator" like abilities, where they could do anything they wanted, the world would be a better place? In the case of Bush, the nuclear winter would still be blocking out the sun. In the case of Obama, we would already be standing in lines for our bread rations. Thank God, these meglomaniacs have to compromise.

While I am responding to your post, this is generally directed at each and every person who thinks "Whats the big deal?"

A little background then: I am on active duty. I first joined the army in '99, before the current shindig kicked off.

I completely, totally, one hundred percent disagree with this idea.

Here's why. While on the surface, yes, mandatory service seems like a good idea. Yes, there is historical precedent for a draft/conscription. However, this is still completely against the ideas and ideals that our country was founded upon and stands for today.

There are two basic tenets of liberty. One: That I cause no harm to someone else, nor their property. Two: That in no way, shape, or form may I impose my will on another person. Doing so is tantamount to slavery....

They say you give an inch, and they'll take a mile. We as a people have been giving inches for far too long now, and should something like this ever be even considered, it may just be enough to finally wake the people up to the realization the "big brudder" doesnt really have your best interest at heart after all.....and just how many miles we have traveled from real Liberty.

Boy, am I going to get flamed for this. When I was stationed in West Germany (at the time) I had several german friends. One explained to me that upon graduating from high school. Each young man had to make a choice. 1) Go to college. 2) Go to trade school and get in an apprentice program. 3) Spend two years in the military.
Personally, I thought it was a good idea. What's wrong with getting someone to take accountability for their future instead of being a burden on society.
Now, I don't agree witht the wars that we are in right now. But, I do agree with having a strong military. Again, if you enjoy living in freedom (such as it is) then what is wrong with contributing a little something to that freedom.
The way that our American society stands right now. No one wants to do anything that they don't have to do. Our young people just want to listen to music and play video games. Heaven forbid that they become a productive member of society. I am against big government, but something has to change if we are going to continue to be a viable society.

War is never a solution to anything. You want to contribute to a better world? The dumbest thing you can do is to join a military.

United States is weird in that its considered something honorable to go attack countries that are much weaker and take over their resources. You are playing exactly into the hands of the elite. I bet they are laughing their asses of as you go off to wars you dont even understand.

I wish you guys would be smarter and make other choices than previous generations. People need to say no to things like this for things to be able to change for the better.

I maybe slammed for my views, but you tell me what is so wrong with spending two years out of your lives in the service of the country you live in.
Shame on you for not wanting to serve.

Many countries require this form of service, so why do you think you are so much better, or have more rights.

It does not say you will go to war, there are other options, to help support, and or defend the very rights you all seem so content to enjoy without any effort on your part...

If I were of age, I would serve for two years, and glad of the chance. Being disabled, I might be put behind a desk filing papers, but I would love the serve the country I love and so should you.

Be Well

RKL

I shall serve by my own free will on a day to day basis.

BUT, I shall not serve because of laws oppressed onto me to do so.

There is a difference between serving with love and serving in fear I do not follow the latter.

Question to all you people against mandatory service:

Just before you close your eyes to go to sleep at night and on an off chance you remember all those other American's giving, sacrificing, suffering, and yes, some dying - just for you? Do you sleep well?

IMO - Mandatory 2 years would be one of the best things that could happen to the USA and should be served by those who've either dropped out of school or just completed high school if they're not going to college.

I mean it's not like almost every other Country out there hasn't had to do the same.

About time the majority of American's had to start GIVING something back to their Country, SACRIFICING something for others instead of just sitting back complaining about it.

I also believe there should be other ways of serving.
2 years of taking care of Veterans in your area.
2 years of helping underprivileged, low income handicapped, etc.
24 months of SOMETHING to help those around you.
Or just 24 months of butt busting give-it-all-or-break-your-balls service.
Take your pick.

Flame that.

I mean why should FREEDOM come for free to some and not to others?

peace

EDIT = Spelling error and to include the statement in BOLD.

Where did you find H.R. 5741? I search all the US congressional bill database in both The House and Senate and I could not find any record of this so-called bill.

Please tell me where I can research H.R. 5741?

Is this a joke or did you make this up??????????

If I am wrong, I stand corrected.

To be allowed to vote in this country the following criteria should have to be met.
1. A person must serve at least 2 yrs. in the service of the country be it in the military, or governmental public service.
2. you must pay at least one dollar more in taxes than you have received in benifits from the federal dole.

This is exactly what I am talking about.

YOU do not KNOW that your vote means NOTHING, and you are NOT a "person". A "person" is an "incorporated group or individual, this has been held to include foreign and domestic CORPORATIONS". A person is a corporate FICTION.

Yes, your birth certificate IS a warehouse receipt for your birth, the "U.S. corporation" owns you, you are THEIR employee and slave. You are collateral for the debt.

BUT, there is no debt. Only debt instruments. YOUR taxes PAY FOR NOTHING in government as there IS NO government.

This is all a false facade and most people are duped into believing it. Be LIE ving it!! There is a LIE in believe.

These congress people are schills to keep us pre-occupied so we don't figure out the truth. Time to wake up and smell the coffee people, no more ignorance please.

Welcome to the Matrix.

stupid. they can't make me go to war any more than i can make them fix our busted roads and failing schools. i love america, don't get me wrong, this is the greatest country on earth. you could say we have a duty to serve america, but the government also has a duty to serve us and it seems like they are only concerned with themselves for the time being. so i think we should all share their sentiments. selfishness or self preservation? i for one refuse to fight for the interests of these criminals. i would rather sit in prison for the rest of my life than die in some distant desert. how could a rich sheltered politician who grew up in ten million dollar mansion possibly know anything about what is good for the common man? what could they know about the real world? the struggles that most of us on this little blue dot face? they couldn't. send your own families to die in the desert.
