The Wikileaks 'source': Former army analyst facing 52 years in prison

Bradley Manning, 22, was serving as an army intelligence analyst in Baghdad when he was taken into custody by military police in May this year and transferred to Kuwait. Charges against him were filed this month and, if they stick, he could face 52 years in prison.

This young man is going to be facing possibly spending the majority of his life behind bars. I understand that what he did was wrong, but it needed to be done. TPTB are trying to prove that these documents being released will harm soldiers currently serving overseas. I don't think he should spend any time behind bars for what he did. After all he was only helping the U.S. government try to spread propaganda about Iran and Pakistan's involvement.

What do you guys think? Should this guy spend the majority of his life behind bars?

Hard to believe, it wasn't his duty to release jack. He swore an oath when he joined. He knew the consequences of doing anything stupid as he was told several times about his job and then he signed papers to that effect regarding his job and what would happen if he decided to do something stupid.

He should be shot as a traitor, not glorified like he's some sort of hero to look up to.

50 years in prison, he should ask for a northern facing cell at Ft. Leavenworth. The southern exposure ones get hot in the summer.

Ignorant and uneducated post. Continue with believing in that your government can do no wrong and that democracy and christianity are the only ways to live life. Continue with your shallow and insignificant belief that a man who exposes the trespasses of his government is a traitor and a spy and worthy of execution. You are one of the most despicable human beings I have encountered if this post is typical of you as a person.

This man is a hero to truth, a hero to everything the founding fathers and the constitution stands for. In the face of tyranny this man did what he KNEW was right, to expose the wrongs and the killings, the treachery of the United States in its war in afghanistan and he should be given a hero's welcome. The citizens of the United States of America should be in the streets protesting his detention and demanding the prosecution of all those exposed for their trespasses.

Yes, I like that we are getting a look at some documents that speak of what we already knew was going on.

Perhaps in the future he will be looked upon as a hero. Time will tell.

I don't know the extent of these things that he helped bring into the public view. The word from the White House is this all is detrimental to the security of the U.S. Well................I recall Michele Obama stating that our overweight youth were a detriment to the security of the U.S. as well.

A "detrimental" thing, event, or mindset, can be anything someone wants to portray it as.

Other people could claim these same things are actually a great boon to the well-being of a country or the world in general, considering their impact upon various behaviours and actions.

I'll wait for the trial to decide. We don't have enough facts, and it could be so easy to frame someone for something like this, especially if his only connection to Wikileaks is the previous video.

As to whether he was the source for the new trove of documents, Assange noted: "There's no allegation, as far as we can determine, that this material is connected to Mr Manning."

If Manning was the source, he might have got away with it had he not struck up a cyber-relationship with Adrian Lamo
, a convicted hacker in California, who reported their contact to the Pentagon.

Everyone has an inbuilt oath to human decency and truth, this oath should come first.

Manning was brave doing what he did.

It’s the people who don’t pass information to the press, and therefore (through nothing but obedience) choose to become complicate whatever crimes, that are the ones who most need to shot, because they are some of the few people who can be counted on, to lead our whole country, permanently into tyranny

The Man is hero, because he’s an opponent of abuses of power, secrecy, and public deception.
He is a patriot for releasing information that has caused harm to almost no Americans, yet has educated the entire Nation-world. If you better understood the value of morality, surely you too would be congratulating his bravery, rather bashing him for showing strength of character?

Without people like him their would be less good people. America would probably never, even have come close, to being a democracy, (like before Kennedy or the advent of western media falling into so few hands, mostly united by the same political-market forces).

Its not that they knew he was doing it, or that wikileaks told who they came from. Its that Adrian Lamo was the one that ratted him out for personal publicity and gain. Had Brad never gotten close to Adrian, instead just sending the info to Julian at wikileaks, then he would probably still be as anonymous as he wanted to be.
However, he is a young, confused, impressionable soldier that was trying to do the right thing, but confided in the wrong person.

As to his hero status, I think he is a hero of the people and a hero of the truth. He did this because he saw a coverup of epic proportions going on against innocent people and could not stand to let it just be swept under the rug like all of the past attrocities and lies the US Govt has committed in the past to validate war.

The sad part about this is that the American people will just go back to watching American Idol and the other mind numbing shows on TV and forget all about this.

I would bet that most Americans don't even know that this whole Wikileaks scandal is happening.

One thing I find interesting is that there is only one incedent under the counter terrorism category. I thought the whole reason the U.S. was in Afghanistan was to counter terrorism

I think that it is up to the American people to protest Bradley Mannings imprisonment, it is the american government/military who are deciding this mans punishment, this government /military are supposed to serve the American people.

Any American who feels that Manning should not be sent to jail for this should organise protests/ write to whomever and voice your disgust/ contact local and national media etc, just try and do something as a people to help the guy.

In a word, yes. But if they put him in Leavenworth, he won't make it 52 years.

I'm actually surprised it's only 52 - IIRC they can hit you with 10 years per document.

Yes, and the government makes these things called laws. And Manning knew full well what would happen if he did what he did - trust me, when you get security clearance AND when you get your little JWICS intro, they tell you ad nauseum what you can and can't do, and what will happen if you screw up.

It wasn't an accidental walking off with a document that got mixed in with your other stuff in the document room. He deliberately did this, and it was very unlawful, and he got caught.
