The question Du'jour, no doubt.

news.yahoo.com.../ap/20040616/ap_on_go_pr_wh/bush

There is some concern that after the June 30th takeover by the Iraqi governing council, that they will not try Saddam Hussein for crimes against humanity. An even greater fear is that he may, again, rise to power as most of his former advisors (read: henchmen) are already free and several actually hold prestigious positions within the reconstituted Iraqi military, security forces and even the new council.

Would Iraqis stand for this? Given the current situation in Iraq, would Iraqis welcome that? Some (on the left, read as appeasement activists) have even cited stories about Iraqis claiming that things were better under Saddam as opposed to the US occupation. What's your take on this? I'm curious as to other people's opinions. Thanks.

If the Americans want to give the Iraqi people 'democracy' then it is up to them to decide isn't it?

Sure, it is up to the Iraqis, however, are the Iraqis equipped to guarantee that Saddam wouldn't be freed by Al Queda or some other insurgency group? It's a fair question

Well if Saddam was back in power he would do a much better job at maintaining order than the coalition troops have been doing but I do not think Saddam will ever be handed over to the Iraqis. He will probably conveniently die of cancer/heart failure whilst still in American custody, as it is obvious Bush doesn't want to hand Saddam over.
