List sends chill throughout Utah's Latino community

An anonymous letter naming 1,300 purported illegal immigrants sparks investigations and a wave of worry.

lol, well I wonder what kind of government operation this was spawned by...

Since the distribution of an anonymous letter this week containing the names, addresses and other personal data of more than 1,300 Utah residents said to be undocumented immigrants, Tony Yapias' phone has not stopped ringing.

"I have one phone line; I've already missed 60 calls now, and there are 72 messages," said Yapias, director of the advocacy group Proyecto Latino de Utah. "People wanting to know if they're on the list. Should they move to another state? Should they leave the country? Horrified, scared, whatever language you can put on it."

The office of Gov. Gary Herbert, a Republican, announced Thursday that an investigation into the list was focusing on the possibility of an unauthorized release of information from the state Department of Workforce Services, which collects information on unemployment benefits, food stamps, Medicaid and other government programs....

"These people [who distributed the list] are very interested in making sure that we disclose the names of people they think are breaking the law. I think it's only fair that they disclose who they are, and tell us why they didn't break the law," said Paul Murphy, spokesman for the Utah attorney general's office....

Federal authorities also are examining the list because, in some cases, it contained Social Security numbers, said Jonathan Lasher, assistant inspector general for external relations for the federal Social Security Administration.

Oh yeah baby - strike two for the hacking community lol... Didnt Need wikileaks for this one. I find it disturbing that the State of Utah knew about these perported Illegal Aliens, and even knew they had stolen identities, but refused to act upon them, to a point to where someone decided to make Utah do the right thing...

While investigating these little details, perhaps the State of Utah should be investigated for "Harboring a fugative of the Law", and "Bringing hardship and distress to the citizens of Utah" by allowing undocumented illegal aliens to infultrate thier job force and assault the American worker's Market Share that guarantees a stability in Wage levels... and any Utah based corporation's complicity in hiring anyone found on that list!

Obviously the solution is to take the private information of legal American citizens and just pass it around to just about anyone. The best way to keep America free is to stomp all over the rights of its citizens. Praising this is like praising the nuking of an entire state because it has a sanctuary city in it.

Kind of an extremists view on it don't you think, they dont ever actually say they are illegal infact it goes to say that some on the least are actually legal citizens. So I see no wrong here, and before we go and claim "dirty immigrents" look at some of us, we have just as many people who are legal that are lazy and pop out kid after kid just to get money and stay on welfare.

Some lessons from America's past that lead to secession and rebellion:

He has forbidden his Governors to pass Laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his Assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them.

He has endeavoured to prevent the population of these States; for that purpose obstructing the Laws for Naturalization of Foreigners; refusing to pass others to encourage their migrations hither, and raising the conditions of new Appropriations of Lands.

He has excited domestic insurrections amongst us, and has endeavoured to bring on the inhabitants of our frontiers, the merciless Drug Cartels (previously indians), whose known rule of warfare, is an undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes and conditions.

1. There was a time in America's past when people were ready to WAGE WARFARE against the government because it prevented people from immigrating here. (oh how far we have descended into tyranny)

2. There was a time in America's past when people were ready to WAGE WARFARE against the government for refusing to take action against armed invaders.

3. There was a time in America's past when people were ready to WAGE WARFARE against the government for not allowing state governors to take appropriate actions to secure peoples property rights.

In a free country, jobs are so plentiful that we would be begging "illegal" Mexicans to come up here and work because we wouldn't be able to fill all the jobs. Of course, we don't have a free market or a free country today. We have a fascist oligarchy of corporate tyrants that use the power of government to run our lives and loot us of our money.

Corporate socialism and massive social welfare along with unending wars have destroyed the once great nation of America.

Something tells me if you broke your arm your solution would be to end the government mnemeth1.

As for this thread though, I think I'd me much more afraid of my fellow citizen denying me my constitutional rights than the government if I lived in Utah right now.

This is insanity, even if every single person on this list does turn out to be in the United States illegally, which is highly unlikely as pointed out above, you do not go about enforcing one law by breaking another!

I agree with the official in the article, if you want the rule of law to be applied to all, the people who did this should come forward and accept all of the legal consequences for their actions as well.

While everyone here seems to agree with the government - hasn't anyone here noticed that the government was not only allowing these illegals to exist, but also allowing them to possess stolen identities of honest American citizens?

After all, this information supposedly was obtained from a government source....

Down with the people, and up with criminal activity! the government comitted the crimes first. someone on the inside obviously knew this, and therefore, grabbed a copy of this information and began a campaigne of exposure that obviously Utah is very embarrased about.

I got a question for all you government supporters...

WHAT IF ONE OF THESE PEOPLE DO TURN OUT TO BE AN ILLEGAL ALIEN - AND THEY WERE USING YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER AND BIRTH CERTIFICATE... WHAT WILL YOU SAY TO THAT?

I suppose you will all just pucker up, and still support government criminality huh?

We're don't all just "agree with the government" like good little automatons here, if you actually read the posts the majority of people here, myself included, are saying it was illegal and wrong for whomever put this list out to do so.

Yep, you're right, illegally entering the United States is in fact against the law, I don't really think anyone would challenge you on that, because it is fact. However illegally giving the names and information of over a thousand people the way that was done here is also against the law, that too is fact.

Just because you, yourself were not a victim of this crime does not mean it's not criminal. Two wrongs do not make a right, that is what is being said.

I may agree but just cannot stand how these talking heads get all sanctimonious about this with that old song and dance rule of law.

Why doesnt he tell the illegals to come forward and accept the legal consequences of their action and how they are afforded benifits due a citizen when they are not?

But why pull out all this school house rule now? As if the Mexicans should be benefactors of all good things, even having a blind eye turned on there situation and then going sunday school when something like this happens?

Maybe they should have included all the names of the companies that are employing these "Illegals"

If you want to end the problem, you need to attack all responsible parties.

"tell us why they didn't break the law"

That seems interesting, is Mr Murphy saying these people have to prove their innocence, rather than the other way around, of him having to prove their guilt?

I'm not sure I approve of leaking the list, as it might lead to vigilante actions that are disproportionate.

But if the State did have this list, they really should have done something about these people, if they are truly illegals.

When thinking of what kind of organization would submit a list like this (I don't think it was made by one person, but I could be wrong) the first entity to pop into my head was the Mormon church.

Has anyone taking into account the report also said alot of those people are the list are legal citizens... just because they are latino doesn't make them automaticly illegals. So before we jump to conclusions we should actually read the whole thing. I'm not supporting the goverment here, I'm supporting the people who are being unfairly crucified here. This is turning into the witch trials all over again.

Evidently the people on that list were illegally residing in this country, within the state of Utah. The government agency the list came from was known as the Department of Workforce Services. This list evidently was of individuals who applied for employment that had background checks done on them via the DWS database that red flagged these people as illegal and ineligable for employment.

Two DWS employees were questioned and then one was fired - being accused of releasing the list. The woman still maintains here innocense in the matter however. The other woman employee who had 10 years of service within the department had to go through some special proceedures before she too will be fired.

The list however is verified as containing people who have been red flagged as illegal aliens, some of whom were using stolen identities to obtain legal employment in Utah.

Quoting the news report here.

Yapias said some of those whose names appear on the list have been confirmed as legal residents. He said there are fears the list could reach extremists who might use it to intimidate or harass those on the list.

"Politically, we can agree to disagree," Yapias said. "We can say both sides of the issue have been going at it passionately at every level. But to begin a new level of terrorizing families, that's not right. I mean, it's un-American — whatever word you want to find for it, it's just wrong.

So Again, I say not all of them were illegal... and this is still an evasion of privacy.
