Coming from a psychological perspective (I'm in the mental health field) you have to remember that most of these people are narcissists. True
narcissism, contrary to popular belief, has very little to do with admiring one's own looks, although that can be part of it. Narcissism is
preoccupation with self importance. Once these people become wealthy and famous, and join in with the "in" club of the Hollywood elite, they compete
with each other in whatever is the trendy theme of the moment. For example, one of them adopts one or two third world orphans and shows off "looky
how wonderful and loving I am!" so then others have to get in on the act and before long you have half a dozen rich stars adopting African and Asian
orphans. Same thing when one of them adopts a cause, like starvation, cancer, etc.
One of the most fascinating "trends" is the whole militant-liberal thing, getting angry and bitter and speaking about about gay rights,
conservative-bashing and embracing socialist and marxist values. It's the same phenomenon only the message here is, "Looky how tolerant and
progressive I AM!" So the next one has to out-do that guy and so on.
Get the picture? (No pun intended)
So you see, all this stuff they do is ALL about attention-seeking and making themselves seem god-like to their peers and heros to the rest of the
world. While it may SEEM like they are concerned for the plight of the starving children in Darfur it really is just about THEM exerting
self-importance to garner admiration and adoration - especially if their careers have stalled in the limelight.
