I love it. Cloward-Piven in reverse. Instead of the parasites sucking the host dry the host exits the game and leaves the parasites to feed on...?

If only more business owners were in a position to do the same. Sadly, there's only one way to defeat this beast and that is to starve it to death.

The US is in its death throes and you loons who have the audacity to denigrate and belittle this guy for a wise business decision should take a long walk off a short pier. You have no concept whatsoever of freedom or liberty and your knowledge of business is worse.

Business, in some ways, is like marriage. You find someone you love and commit to each other. Children soon follow. Those children that result aren't the reason you married they are the healthy consequence of the union.

The same is so for business. The man or woman who starts a business does not do so with the aim of creating employees. Employees are the healthy byproduct of a successful business. And nowhere is it carved in stone, morally or legally, that a business must keep its doors open for the sake of keeping people employed.

It's rather apparent, at least to me, that this fellow did not arrive at his decision haphazardly or without a great deal of anguish. I feel certain that the employees and the impact this decision had on them weighed heavily in the decision making process. But, in the end it was his decision to make and his future to consider and I think he chose wisely. It's not easy being the boss.

The Soviet era socialist model will soon be in full swing here in the US. When there is no incentive for the entrepreneur there won't be any entrepreneurs. Productivity falls to zero, innovation disappears and an age of "they pretend to pay us, we pretend to work" is upon us.

Maybe you socialist leaning lefties out there will get lucky and get the jobs jabbing bayonets into the backs of the proletariat to keep the wheels turning. Oh what fun you should have fulfilling your mission in life. Just imagine the dream fulfilled- equality, poverty and misery for all.

You socialist clowns just can't see the end of it all. When you rob Peter to pay Paul where do you go once Peter is finally tapped out?

Lets get one thing very clear on this thread. We seem to have a good mix of self employed business people posting. For those of you who think the governments (any government) want to share the wealth.
Call it what you wish but it is only greed. There is no way to share the wealth with the common people and they know it. These things are true..
1) The rich get rich on the backs of the poor
2) The rich have now taken control of the governments
3) The goverments are taking all the money and power
4) The governments (ie the rich) will control the property the
energy the food and the money
5) You will only have what they allow
6) The american middle class is the last lake of wealth on the planet
and they are coming to take out all the fish and then poison the
water.
Please stop (for your own good) with the pie in the sky, ice cream and lollipop ideas about sharing the wealth. They really do want to share your wealth only not with you. they will however be glad to share "your wealth" among themselves.

I am sorry if that sounds mean but I feel some tough love is in order.
"WAKE UP"

Get real guys.

If this story is even real (questionable at best) the company has obviously lost competitive edge in their marketplace and has been forced to shut down.

Enjoy mediocrity, you aren't 1/100th as cool as you think you are.

Stop whining, this country is a capitalist paradise.

No, it isn't. In fact there are hundreds of thousands pages of business regulations. There are hundreds of thousands of pages of business taxes. There are literally hundreds of tax forms a typical small business must file each year starting in 2011 because of the new Obamacare tax laws.

The OP in this case is a genius because he is seeing ahead of time that changes like the 1099 forms will cause him to stop being able to make a profit. He'd be a fool to keep in business because government programs never get repealed. People who think Obamacare is going to get repealed seem to have forgotten about the department of education and Ronald Reagan.

The American dream is dead. And it is because capitalism in America died in something like the year 1965. And what do you know, that is the same time when the middle class started getting stomped down. Coincidence? No. Capitalism gave us the middle class and now the lack of capitalism in America will destroy the middle class in America. Thats right, America and other socialist countries like France & Greece will be destroyed into the 2-class system they emerged from. Though it would be fair to say America is more Fascist than socialist as the welfare goes to corporations in America.

The only places resembling capitalism are Singapore and Hong Kong. Thats it. The United States is not capitalist. Now that capitalism is getting snuffed out completely in the USA the only possible result is for the middle class to get snuffed out completely. Its sad that you are not looking at all the studies, data, and information showing how capitalism reduces poverty and increases the middle class.

Even though it was your business and you can do as you please, im glad your way of fighting back at the man is by dumping 187 hard workers (and their families so probably 500+ people) that you apparently took for granted who, if not for them, you would have none of this money in the first place, and now your mooching the system you hate so much.

Great job! I hope you sleep well at night, because after fighting with thousands of others all day for the select few jobs left, im sure your ex employees wont.

You sound like the people you hate so much. Epic fail.

Everyone thinks they are the host, that's the problem. Being drained of money, happiness, health, time, ect. Business owners feel screwed. Workers feel screwed. Young people feel screwed. Students feel screwed. Minorities feel screwed. On it goes. Should we all just have anarchy or are disgruntled business owners the only ones that are entitled to their emotions?

The victim mentality doesn't do much to actually make anything better, it just allows you to be a greater parasite by thinking you're justified in your actions against society. You see yourself separate from society, and are hostile to it, sounds like a parasite to me.

Think how some people will scream racism, but really not care about ending racism, but only use it as a tool to justify and amplify their greed.

Indeed.

Hooray! The corporate social engineering paradigm wins again!

Soon anyone who isn't part of Conglomo or Megacorp will vanish from the market and the hammer can come down.

Sorry the business owners can't prosper... but they're not relevant to the robber baron's goals anyway. It's about those 187 employees you were protecting from them...

Goooooooooal! Economic Royalists win.

I am very happy for you and your family. I believe you have done the right thing.

If we want to make a big impact on the government then we must never again buy anything on credit. Take control of your finances, save for your retirement and stop paying into social security. Stop feeding the wolves.

It is unfortunate that the government is drying up this beautiful country. They have stolen money and land from the people.

That's what came to my mind after reading the smug OP. It's not his fault his business closed, he's just getting away from parasites! It's everyone else's fault.

Well, that's the market for you. If you aren't bright enough to use the law to your advantage and stay ahead of the competition, you go out of business.

CONGRADULATIONS!

I completely agree with you! This country is going DOWN HILL FAST!!!!!!! The socialist agenda is being pushed down every Americans throat and unfortunatly some of us are not as lucky as you. I am only 31 so I can't retire. I work for my fathers company and he is doing anumber of things to prepare for this downhill spiral. He just had to lay off a number of people because when you have over a certain amount of employees the taxes go way up. How can a business small or medium stay afloat with all these policies? How will the economy get any better with all that is going on? My only hope is that people wake up and change what they can come November. And even then there is not much hope. I feel like America as we know it is coming to an end. What a sad sad thing.... the very ideas that made this country what it is and being thrown out the window due to the immoral people in power.

Yes, if even true.

It reads more like it was typed by someone with little business skill.

Profitable businesses don't "close the doors" out of the blue. But yeah, I am sure it was all the taxes that I believe still haven't even changed yet. As far as I know the Bush tax cuts have not been repealed so far.

Even if, if your razor thin profit margins were erased because of 3.5% - 5.5% you weren't that great anyway. You were eaten by bigger fish or most likely never existed at all. (IMO)

I love this post...whether its real or not.(people on this site really enjoy making up fake internet identities) anyways everything this country has done so far under the liberals is all about the redistribution of wealth. Everyone always points to clinton saying we had the largest middle class...times were good...yes and now many of our current problems are thanks to him.

I live in wisconsin. Ran by one of the most liberal cities in america. This state absolutely hates small business or just business in general.(They fail to realise the rich do indeed pay their bills) harley davidson has been strongly considering leaving this state as well as mercury marine which had previously considered. The only reason why they stayed last second was because the county they were in off a 400 million dollar tax incentive at the cost of sales taxes rising along with property taxes...in a metro area of only 400 or 500 thousand people.

Gm closed down their plant in another city here simply because our state taxed the # out of them along with every other business. This state has one of the worst opportunities for start up business entrepreneurs and rightfully so has one of the worst start up percentages. I grew up in the milwaukee metro area(2 million people) and thankfully did not live within milwaukee county lines. The liberal government there completely destroyed everything. Large business owners have been forced to form their own committee to recruit and get out of state business here which has not not the greatest. The milwaukee public school system is second worst in the country next to detroit. The crime is terrible and the county can not get a grip on spending. The way the government is ran under the liberal mayor in milwaukee is whacky... Just look it up... You will not see many other counties if any really at all run their govenment like they do. It's a waste of money and they give themselves more power essentially. I could go on forever about how terrible a job the liberals have done in this state, but I can barely think as it is anymore...at least we aren't california right?...

Either way I grew up middle class and never have I thought that for people that work hard in life and become wealthy should be penalized by re distributing their wealth. Why penalize those that succeed? How does that make sense?...

I believe it's still 5 or 6 more months until they expire. I can't believe people are so quick to fall for it.

Pretty much, most businesses just pass most of the cost of taxes off to the consumer anyway.

I stopped complying 4 years ago!

The beast will continue to eat out your life as long as you willing comply.

STOP COMPLYING NOW!

The beast dies as soon as enough of us stop feeding it

Wrong on most counts. I have two step-daughters. One busts her ass working and going to college. The other is a 26 y/o welfare queen that spits out babies like a machine gun (five and counting).

Step-daughter number two has worked maybe one year of her entire life. When she was nearing the end of the welfare free ride she suddenly developed mental illness- depression (jeez, wonder why)- and is now on disability.

Explain to me how this worthless, lazy, do nothing, bottom feeder is a victim? Explain to me why you, I or anyone else should contribute one penny to her upkeep and subsidize her procreation frenzy (which, by the way, is just to draw another $345 per child each month)?

That you're not crying foul befuddles me because she's not the exception, she's the norm! Her man lives with her so we're feeding his worthless ass too.

This crap can't go on. I believe in safety nets not social dragnets to round up the nations sick, lame and lazy to make sure they live cush lives. Where do you draw the line? Somebody has to row this boat and if government is applying handcuffs to the people who are what exactly is the end of all of this nonsense?

And to all of you Harvard Business School graduates who point to a failed business model, can't compete, can't hack proposition the fact of the matter is that the bedrock of our economy is small business most of which operate on very small margins. You fools! The single largest job creation engine in the country and you have just enough gray matter to call them stupid.

How many of us worked our way through college at some kind of Mom and Pop small business? How many of us got out of college and just couldn't land those CEO and VP positions and had to start our climb up the ladder with another small fry of the business world.

This isn't about failed business models. This is about government burdens in excess of what is fair and reasonable. New and greater taxation going into one of the worst worldwide economic boondoggles the planet has ever seen is the height of madness. I don't give a damn how well intended it may appear or how warm and fuzzy it may make you feel it's sheer madness.

You want a business that's guaranteed to prosper and not fail over the next several years- buy a funeral home. All the rest are on the table and likely to disappear over the next thirty six months.

I think Maxmars pretty much hit the nail on the head.

Right on brother. While it is unfortunate that so many people were put out of work I can certainly understand how you feel. I own a business as well and have worked very hard for 20 years to build something respectable. I have approximately 70 employees and build a product right here in the good ol USA.

The first 15 years were no picnic. Many sacrifices made along with long long days, no holidays, no weekends and no vacations. All done to keep my business growing. I earned just enough to get by. I started out knowing that if I wanted good talented people I would have to pay well with good benefits. I have achieved that goal.

So many people who embrace the tax the rich mantra have no idea what we so called rich have had to endure to get to this point. I have some employees who make back handed remarks about my sports car. That car is my trophy for years of struggle. While they went home every night and had dinner with their families and drank beer I was working. My kids seldom saw their dad. They are benefitting now though.

I have over the past couple of years watched as my bottom line kept dwindling because of government intrusion. What most non business owners don't seem to get is that my bottom line encompases everything from raises to capitol improvements. More to the non producing citizens and less to the working class. I agree that we who have should give more to people who are truly needy and my wife and I do, quietly helping people who desperately need a hand up not a hand out. The system is broken. Far to many people get government money who are perfectly capable of working but choose not to. This mentality is not owned by any one race, I see it across the racial spectrum.

I have been approached by a much bigger company inquiring as to whether or not I would be willing to sell. I told him I can be for sale but I am not on sale. We are negociating now. If I can get close to what I feel my company is worth I will be set for life. I will join you in retirement bliss. I am only 52 years old and relish the thought of not having to watch hard earned money get mailed to Washington every month.

Maybe we can hook up and have a couple of adult beverages and trade war stories. My current situation makes all of the sacrifice worth it. I too plan on getting as much from the government as possible when I hit 62.5 years old. I have paid in just as everyone has and I plan on getting some of it back. Hell, if this county continues to slide down the socialism path I have already selected a nice littly county that embraces ex pats from the USA and their money. Can live like a king on a small amount of money. A tropical paradice with all the eminities of home.

One day there will be no more evil rich people to milk. Try getting a job from a poor person. Good luck with that.

OP, if you wanna dance, you gotta pay the fiddler, right?

Being self employed with a business pays GREAT rewards, doesn't it??

Everybody has to pay in life. Just be lucky that your burden was low enough to afford you a couple hundred acres of land as well as the opportunity to actually RETIRE in your early 60's.

I know folks in their 70's whom worked in a particular HIGHLY skilled trade where 50-65 hours per week is COMMON (and mandatory if you value your job) during most of the year. Work is FIRST, family and free time is SECOND during your ENTIRE CAREER! Having done this for 50+ years FAITHFULLY most of these folks CANNOT EVEN IMAGINE RETIRING YET!!! They certainty DO NOT have hundreds of acres of land, and what they pay in expenses and taxes is a MUCH greater a ratio in regards to their income as it was for you.

So QUIT THE B*TCHIN'!!! I got friends that own their own business, and they are making out like GODS. Perhaps it was unwise spending habits or mismanagement in your particular case??

Dont blame it on others, that is the easy way out.

You OBVIOUSLY are in great comfort. There are MANY, MANY folks right now in this country are barely able to feed themselves, are FORECLOSING on their homes, cant buy for their children, and STRUGGLING to SURVIVE thanks to GREED from folks who have EVERYTHING but are not satisfied.
