A lot of people get this kinda stuff wrong.

Forget about socialists, republicans, nazis, fascists, democrats. If you watch MSM (ohdear, you do not know the Main Stream Media?) you are very disinformed. Americans usually don't know front from back. Luckily some Europeans do.

Most governments are put into place by money. Yours very probably is. Don't care if it is republican or democratic or socialist or a dictatorship. You love money, as well as they do. Money is the new God. Most pray/prey for it. I usually do.

If you look at the American economy, like 95% of the wealth is owned by 5% of the pop (maybe much worse!). The rest is you and me. Your government - and mine - do what the power = money tells them to.

Sure, you can start a business, and end it when you want/need to. But please do not blame anyone but the SUPER rich for the state your country is in. They call the shots, they are MSM, they control your govt.

If you do not agree with me, please inform yourself better. READ all (interesting stuff) you can find on the internet and stay out of MSM 'cause they lie.

Luckily quite a few posters on ATS have their own way to find out some real information about their topics/replies.

Excuse me, but if you dare to blame 'socialists' for your taxes, you are quite misinformed. Back to TOP for you^^.

Is this satire? Or are you really telling us that your solution to the "moochers and parasites of this nation" is in fact to become one of them? Your attempt at capitalism has failed and as a result you will depend on tax payers to support you? Oh no, that is far to ironic. I call satire.

So, to all you socialist, to all the wealth redistributionist who think I should give back even more of my hard earned dollars, and to all the just plain low life moochers who have ruined this country,

I can tell right here that you must have been a lovely employer to work for…

While you are stepping off to the sidelines, how about you cease to avail yourself of those “socialist” perks?

we will receive all the social security benefits we are entitled to. My monthly income from my personal savings and retirement plans are structured in such a way as to insure that rather than pay income taxes, I will be getting tax refunds. My house and land are paid for, and I will even get subsidies from the government for some of my land.

While you are claiming that taxes are responsible for your business's failure, it seems much more likely that you simply failed to compete and survive during the economic downturn...well actually personally you are doing just fine...right?

Must be nice to have tax attorneys that know how to game the system..

All in all I think American capitalism will be just fine without you.

I didnt make the rules. I have played by them for the last 30 yrs. and now for the first time those rules work in my favor. Let the government give back to me for awhile, they certainly took enough.

Congrats on your retirement, as a fellow business owner I know all too well the ridiculous, unfair requirements put on you by the Gov. People who dont run their own business really have no idea whats its like. I will be retiring the moment I am able to as well. I have some very good employees and I will be sure to give them as much advance notice as possible. In the end, however, they are employees and not business owners themselves, so its up to them to ultimately find future employment. I will assist them as much as I can, which I am sure you did as well.

Good luck and enjoy your retirement!

And I applaud you as well. I also can read between the lines of your post and see that you have not done this because you Wanted to, rather you have been pushed and pushed until your back is against the wall. This is exactly how I feel, however, I am not in a position to retire to a 200 acre ranch. However, I have always taken care of my own needs without any assistance. I find it utterly disgusting that there are so many lazy incompetent people in this world that choose not to help themselves!

Wish I could give you multiple stars & flags because this is one deserving thread!!!

PHEDREUS, I am sorry to see you throw in the towel but cannot blame you. People see a business owner as sitting pretty, and leading and independent lifestyle. They don't see that in private business the buck stops at your desk. If you can't make the payroll your loyal staff will suddenly leave. If you don't make your loan payments on schedule you are out of businesses. If business declines you, ultimately have to be the troubleshooter to find out what is wrong? When deadlines need to be met it will be you and only you, who is there to turn off the lights at night. You are the guy that is the slave to the business, not your employees.
You are sad to close shop but, hey you are not a charity. Your 183 employees are likely totally uninformed about the coming fascist state and it is not your job to educate them. They will have to figure it out on their own and realize that if they don't get active and real soon they are doomed.
If you don't see your mission in life to be a martyr then definitely check out. If you feel an obligation to your employees, just withold their salaries for a week and see how loyal and understanding they are towards you.
Where you may be wrong, though, is in hunkering down in America.

so you think hiding on a ranch will save you - wait until the choices you just made turn into new vista property taxes to pay for those newly out of work.

at least when you had a company you could strive for greater things now your just a victim of other peoples choices entirely.

The OP doesn't even live in the same society as the majority of us. Forced to retire to your 200 acre ranch? How tragic!

You'll get no sympathy or empathy from me. Amazing how when people are told to pay their share by the government, they cry socialism, when in fact, it's just them being told that they'll make less.

While many people are wondering if they'll have to retire at 72 and eat cat food to stay alive, you're complaining about socialism from your 200 acre ranch. You just look like a pathetic waste of a human life to me. And then you going on how you say that you work harder than the rest of the people? Amazingly out of touch with the common man, I'd say. You might as well be Thurston Howell III.

Frankly, I hope that something befalls your plan and makes you eek out a living like the rest of us to show you what it really could be like. You're not suffering at all and I think you need some true suffering to show you what it's like...

Elitist jerk-offs are what is failing this country and to complain about socialism and then to partake of the system that you're complaining about is hypocrisy exemplified.

Not trying to "HIJACK" your post, but let me explain why I understand what your going through. Loss sucks! Especially when your a young kid and look up and see what your family has...

200 acres, must be nice. My family lost 950 acres in 1973 to the government due to a Highway, and commercialization of the rest. My family came over from Germany in 1943. We lived in Berlin and Hitler used our money to fund his war to take over the world. We were broke and fled to Austria, then to the United States. My great grandpa worked 12 years as a cab driver to save up enough money to move to Alabama to purchase the 1500 acres, to which he got a great deal in 1955. To only lose all but 550 acres in 1973. (I was born in 1978 and had the opportunity to live and roam this land a bit) Then in the 1990's when my Great Grandmother passed away, my Great Uncle swindled my Grandfather and his brothers and sisters out of the rest of the land. Now he only ownes the 3 acres his house sits on. All of the land, sold, gambled, and spent on prostitutes. My grandfather did well, he was retired from the Air Force and the Post Office, plus draws social security and my grandmother retired from a Real Estate firm. They are doing well, but very stingy with the money and thus have told us that they are leaving everything to charity. So no hand-outs here, not that I want anything from them. I have moved to Louisiana to just get away from that part of my family. They are all mooches and buttholes. My father and brother being the worst of them.

I read once that there is 40 livable acres per person in this world. Anything over that is "over-kill" in my opinion. But maybe I'm a socialist. Who knows. I really am glad you got yours and got "out the game" before you got screwed like me. I mean hey, I was military for 10 years and didn't make crap, got out, have a pretty good job, not making over 50,000 a year, but decent job with good benefits. My wife is a teacher, so she doesn't get paid squat event though she is teaching our future. But who cares. At least you got yours right??!!

1/3 Homeless Americans are Veterans

We are all going through hard times. Maybe one day I will have the same opportunities as the OP. I have worked my ass off for 17 years (I'm 31, started work at 14) and I have had everything taken from me 3 times in my life, not from the Government, but women. hahaha!

Good luck OP, I hope the Oil and Gas industry doesn't f*ck you like everyone here in Louisiana, but I think it's very likely either they will get your land, or someone else, because we don't own land, the Government owns it all. That's why at anytime they can run a Highway, Railroad, or build a city on top of your land and pay you what they feel like. Trust me, I've seen it done first hand. Good luck OP! Your going to need it until you die and take all that cash and land with you!!!

I think this thread should be forwarded to the offices of those whom write economic policy at the White House. I commend the OP for standing up for himself and what he earned.

I also would like to take an opportunity to point out to those "freemen" (or whatever you call yourselves) that threads are not here for you to bait people into discussing your views. Make your own thread for that and quit trying to derail other people with your opinions.

Gday,i understand where you are coming from.I do landscape constructions, worked a night job for 3yrs to get it going.Built it up to the point where i needed several employees, too much hassle to put them thru the books so i would sub contract them, pay their bill at the end of the week.
All good until you get too $7000.00 in pay administered to them, after that they are deemed an employee by work cover and you have to pay their premium.
It just seems at every twist and turn, theres a new tax,new law,new something, and its very easy to get fed up with it all.Large amounts of money going thru the books but very little in your own pocket.

Moved to the country 2 yrs ago,now i do the odd job here and there and milk cows every now and then, just making enough to pay the bills and put food on the table.

I have also done odd jobs for barter since moving here,no money exchanged,we also swap and barter our eggs and vegies.
Next step is to get a freezer so i can knock a steer, then i wont have to buy meat for the year.

If your employees are angry then maybe they should vent their anger towards the government.

Good luck.

OP sounds ungrateful to me.

Be happy you earn any money at all.

200 acres of land, almost 200 employees. Your future income can't look THAT "deplorable". Sounds greedy to me.

But enjoy your retirement.

I can see that you are concerned with yourself only. While you have every right to do with your business as you please, rest well knowing that even though you have the ability to help people you choose to look only after yourself. You cannot serve two masters. Your decision is your own. God bless you.

Actually this thought process of helping others it the root problem. It is not sustainable. The charity network breeds the pyramid scheme as it only works when someone has more and someone has less.

If everyone was self sufficient and independant we would not need to "give" hand me downs or donate to charities that perpetuate "needyness" and enable dependant lifestyles that keep people from trying to provide for themselves.

The absolute truth of the matter is and no one is willing to address it; is that we as modern people are in debt to the earth and its resources we have built a modern world and lifestyle that is "not living within our means".

Helping those in need due to unforseen and dire circumstances is a good idea. If someone were in need of CPR I would help in that manner. But if someone were in need of a paycheck to participate in the obviously unsustable modern world we live in, I wouldn't help perpetuate that either.

Its obvious to me the OP has had it with the system that we live in and has come to the brutal realisation that the only way to fight this system is to not participate and not help others participate.

If he would have sold the business the problem would have been allowed to continue under a different name.

HAHA well everyone is so upset on this thread.
Heres a joke... ( i wrote it myself)
How many solalist does it take to open a door?
12

1 to define its funtion
1 to redifine its funtion to meet socalist goals
1 to write a bill, changing its funtion to better serve socialist politics
1 to protest said bill
4 to over rule the protest of said bill
1 to appeal the said bill
1 to tack onto the bill many things unneeded at the time
1 to open the door
1 left to lock the door behind them

haha
Were all screwed so lets get drunk, I think ill come over end visit when the stink hits the fan OP, Do you like Whiskey?

The OP sounds like a success story to me.

- 187 families did have jobs, and probably appreciated the gainful employment for however long it lasted. Not too many expect carreers to last a lifetime at one company anymore. I wish I could say I helped that many people earn some money in my time!

- Remember that 24 experts predicting US economic collapse ? Who is to say you are not pulling out at an ideal time.

- You could easily grow crops, etc on your ranch if you need future income. You`re so far from high and dry it ought not be a concern.

- We need to tear down our economy and build it anew (as a barter economy) before much gets better. So good job pulling the stakes!

OP - I know it must have hurt to have to give up your business, but I think it is what everyone must do.

Stop paying their damned taxes - they simply line their own pockets and make war with the money.

Well done OP - enjoy your well earned early retirement, although i am sure you will find many things to keep your mind and hands busy - I'm sure your energy will outlive that one enterprise.

As for the people who blab on about the people who lost their jobs, what a bunch of idiots. Point the finger at those responsible - the criminals in govt - not those who have been trying to keep things going despite a heavier and heavier burden.
