A lead congressional committee investigating the Gulf of Mexico oil spill has broadened its inquiry, now checking if tens of thousands of abandoned oil and gas wells are leaking or even being monitored for leaks.

27,000 is a lot of wells. What sickens me most is the fact that many of them have been sitting there rotting without any inspection for nearly 60 years. But I will believe they are being checked when I see it for myself. I also wonder how many ARE leaking and no one knows about it but the oil companies. It would suck to learn that they have been using an underwater dispersant on these things without telling anyone outside of big oil.
