It's officers like this that give the rest a bad name and cause such distrust and hatred of the police. The saddest part is i have heard some officers defending his actions with the usual excuses of "oh it's such a hard job sometimes it's difficult". Yet if the average person loses their temper they go to prison very quickly.

I hope this officer spends a good long while in prison for assault.

This kind of comment makes you no better than the police officer. If you want to believe yourself better than him then don't follow in his footsteps. Instead try and make sure the law is applied.

I don't see why some people think this is a victory against police brutality. Suppose I saw a cop riding a bicycle. I decide to shoulder-block him and claim he assaulted me, but the incident was videotaped. Could I expect my punishment to be the loss of my job and to have the taxpayers pay any fines?

Odds are this ex-cop will wind up working for another police department somewhere else. Maybe he can go to California and shoot an handcuffed suspect in the back for resisting arrest, or go to Texas and join an extortion racket.

if your job is to protect and serve the public...but your harming and wrongfully arresting them then yes you can expect to lose your job...as for tax payers paying this guys compensation...your tax payers hired that idiot cop in the first place...and if justice was ever done correctly that officer should be paying that money back himself.

this was a very good victory for the fight against police brutality...dam i freakin hate those few people who take the wrong side purely for the sake of being different.

grow up

Patrick Pogan claimed activist Christopher Long steering into him and knocked him down during a demonstration in New York.

The "ACTIVIST" steered into him. You notice the little trigger word there? Activist. That word alone I'm sure had so many people on the cops side of it. Those damn activists. He was probably getting what he deserved right? That is one of the many reasons I'm completely digusted with the media anymore. They just love their little labels to get people all fired up and divided to one side or another.
That cop didn't knock a young man riding his bicycle to the ground. No sir'ee, it was one of them activists. Wasn't that Barrack Husseini Obama guy an activist too? Damn I hate those liberal communist socialist marxist activist bicyclists. Lock em all up. I'm sure that cop probably recognized him from an earlier incident at this illegal FOCUS GROUP (another one of those power labels that gets under my skin) and was just using that force he deemed neccessary to apprehend this criminal. He shouldn't have been protesting anyways, they didn't have a permit right?
These folks with their "Label and Dismiss" routine. It would be comical if it wasn't for all the suffering going on in the background. Turn off your TV, put down your newspapers. ATS and a select few others are the only places left for propaganda light news and exchange of rational thoughts and ideas. I've been coming here for a good 4-5 years now. I have noticed though, the past maybe 18-24 months that this site has been infiltrated by some would turn it into another GLP or DrudgeReport. Thank the eternal transcendent being in the sky that they are usually unsucessful in their attempts to derail threads. I have come to view ATS as an online armchair philosophers existential roundtable. No hierarchy, save for the mod of a thread. And most of the time the discussions are extremely productive, civil, and thought provoking. I'm just about up to here though (hand to my nose) with labels. Especially labels which plant seeds of bias and animosity.
That being said, I'm glad this activist bicyclist may see some justice. Hope that stormtrooper reject didn't hurt you too bad when he freight-trained you out of nowhere.

Get to know a cop for a while, they like to tell stories a lot. I think it's a little like confession. Or seeking approval for things they know probably were not righteous. Sometimes you'll hear little slips of the tongue like the word "throwdown".
It's not about throwing down a puny little bicyclist.

The older and retired cops will say however that there is something very wrong with the blatant abuse the younger cops are dishing out to citizens. Probably due to war exposure/PTSD etc.

AMAZING

People still don't get it, cops are HIRED by the city, they are NOT elected by the PEOPLE. Therefore, they are corporate security guards and that is it. Sheriff Richard I. Mack explains this in many of his youtube video's. Also Officer Jack McLamb also explains it on his website.

Cops have NO jurisdiction OVER you that you do not consent to them having. You are born a corporate entity and until you undo that......YOU are the property of the government and the cops can treat you as they want. The court, being the banker and collector of dues or fees and fines, can decide if you have been wronged and if you deserve compensation. Wake up people, your vote means nothing, you have been duped and you buy into this BS all day long. I laugh, most have no idea and claim to be a "U.S. citizen", NO not me, I am an American and a Sovereign, a flesh and blood living soul outside the venue and jurisdiction of the city, county and State, also the Federal Corporate "government".

See, way back when, people were responsible for themselves and their actions, if someone was in trouble, they would lend a hand, if someone was stealing they would stop them and get a rope. The people back then did not need more than the county Sheriff, and seldom needed him. Where did it all go wrong? 1700 or there abouts. A police force was thought up (in England) and how to enslave the masses without their knowledge or consent was also thought up, by who else but.........the Elite.

Wake up and get a clue, YOU have the political power and do not know how to use it. There is much online here to explain it to you and many have threads on ATS about just that subject. "All Roads Lead to Rome" is the best one. Read it and learn something and then do something about it, if we don't, you can bend over and kiss your rear goodbye. The cops will keep kickin' it until you submit or you decide to end yourself.

What a sad country (America) we have become and a sad society.

I don't know what I can add aside to say that it is always nice to see justice prevail. The cop straight up assaulted this man and tried to lie/cover it up.

Which was stupid to attempt to do, considering there was BOUND to be tons of cameras around....

You know, as more and more cameras pop up, it creates the illusion that there are more and more brutality cases, but, really there is the same amount, there are just more cameras around to catch it.

That said, most cops are great. There are a few bad apples that ruin it for the rest though. This is one, and justice has been served.

Most cops are great !!!!!!!
Please; Cops are not some sort of "great" superhumans. Most are mediocre IQs at best, very typically schizoid and clerical of personality tests, and lack any ability to judge what higher authority tells them to do. I'll bet you think the guards at the Nazi camps were "great" too.

Stop apologizing for the work of thugs against the citizens. There is no reason for anyone to suck up to thug cops.
Calm yourself and contain your obvious excitement at the prospect of licking boots; you'll get plenty chances in the future.

There was a clip on utube of a cop shoving a teenage boy against the wall at a mall, the cop shoved the boy so hard it broke his neck and he wasn't even the right kid. After watching the police brutality clips on utube no wonder people get attitudes, respect breaks down.

For the personal attention of Patrick Pogan - I hope that you can never find another job, I hope that no one will employ you for the liar that you are, i hope that you do not get paid by anyone, and that you lose your home, I hope that your world falls apart because the world does not want you. Consider yourself ejected from human kind you scum bag oxygen theif.

Its Critical Mass. Bicyclers hold up traffic with out a permit ok. Also it looks like he was on a Fixie, no brake.

Anyway. I'm for the cyclist.

Oh-my-g*d.

That cyclist didn't do a damn thing to that police officer, he was just trying to go round him, too avoid knocking that officer down. but, somewhere in that policeman's mind, he had to push that innocent person of his bike?! What is this world coming to?!!!

Its a fact here in Australia - but probably more so the case in America - when cops are in training and conduct psychological examinations and personality tests etc - they are looking for particular traits (amongst other things of course) but psychological make up is a big part:

2 thirds of the police force are made up of people specifically chosen because of their: aggressive, authority, alpha-male, testosterone driven and somewhat cold hearted personality type.

The other third is made up of the "good cop" personalities of people skills and friendly demeanor.

Clearly the officer was keeping an eye out for that guy. He didn't even look at the others who were just as close to him earlier. If he said the guy assulted him he must have meant earlier and he was watching for the guy knowing he was in the race.

I wonder why the police would let all those bikes go by and then BOTH cops react when they see that one individual? Could it possibly be that they were waiting for that one guy out of all those bikes? I mean, when you have a mob in the streets like that they NEVER damage other folks personal property. NEVER. I've never seen like protesters pick up a bike rack and toss it through someones coffee shop window just on a whim. just to do it. Nope. I mean, I've never seen a critical mass rider smash a wheel cover on a car with his boot or kick a dent in your door, oh wait, they did that to my car! but it's ok, cause they're green right? thats ok though. I traded my itty bitty saturn in for a big V8 lifted pick up truck shortly after that, so the next time I'm stuck in traffic cause a tiny minority of citizens wanna make a statement, thats cool. next time they'll just have work a little harder to damage my personal property.

As Long approached, Pogan decided to ticket him for such infractions as taking his hands off his handlebars and riding down the middle of the street instead of the side.

Pogan said he instructed Long to stop — which Long denied — and walked toward him as the cyclist veered toward the sidewalk. Then he saw Long lower his shoulder and feared "he was going to try to come through me," he sa
