Due to popular rage at the ban on reporters and photographers from within 65 feet of the oil spill, Coast Guard admiral Thad Allen has rescinded the ban.

Specifically, Allen announced tonight that the media will have full access, as long as they do not interfere with safety or security:

Well that is certianly a step in the right direction. Now if they could only stop the massive leak they opened.

National Incident Commander Admiral Thad Allen today announced new procedures to allow media free travel within the 20-meter boom safety zones if they have followed simple procedures for credentialing, and provided they follow certain rules and guidelines.

controlled access... I guess instead of being controlled from 60ft away they'll be controlled from.... say.... 20ft?

I wonder if independent scientists from other countries such as Russia, China, and Venezuela will be allowed to get their submersibles within 60ft of this "massive leak", that you made sure to reemphasize, so we can get some independent footage?

Great point. It is important to note that they have loosened the restrictions as opposed to an all out ban.

well, this sounds like a good thing.. unless of course you could entertain the idea of they have kept the media away just long enough to finish some other ulterior motive and none of us will know any better.

who knows. stranger things have happened.

I think the most promising part of all this is that it was due to public outcry. This means we (as a people) still have some sort of power against tptb. This is very good news. I do wish they would just stop the damn leak already though!

On an off topic note, your avatar. What does that eye belong to? It looks like it could be some sort of bird but I'm not sure..
