Batter-coated french fries are a fresh vegetable, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which has a federal judge's ruling to back it up.

But the department said yesterday that the classification applies only to rules of commerce, not nutrition, and it does not consider an order of fries the same as an apple in school lunches.

Just add some ketchup and you have a salad!
Is big business changing our perceptions of reality?

The ignorance of the Dept. of Agriculture. The fact that it has batter on it disqualifies it as a fresh vegetable. Would you call a pumpkin pie a fresh vegetable? Or what about zuchini bread? Not that im complaining since this appears to be the only way I get my vegetables.

What are "battered coated" french fries? Aren't the french fries at fast food joints just sliced potatoes?

I love the batter coaded ones. Nice and spicy. Hmmmmm. Now when my mom calls from Germany and tells me to eat my vegetables I can say with a clear conscience that I'm eating plenty of fresh vegetables. lol
