Watch black hawk down as ans example of what not to do.The Marines do not fall into the discription of Special Forces due to there combat role.To define Special Forces they have to work outside of conventional combat roles the Marines do not, therefore not Special Forces by definition.

yes they are not by definition but they ARE specail forces because they go through the comando course which is a special forces test so they are special forces

I'm sorry, but that is the worst damn way to say that any thing is a good thing. By comparing it to the Hollywood tarted-up, action-film biasness.
I've read the book of Black Hawk Down, and admittedly interesting, there were flaws in how they operated. But alas, I am not to cricitize, see signature for explanation.

Having a tougher selection process does not necessarily make your special forces better. Too many people say things like Navy Seals requires there people to run a 5 minute mile and SBS requires a 4:45 mile so SBS is better (times are hypothetical). I could make a SF unit where only Kenyan marathoners would pass the selection process, would this make them the best SF unit? A lot of what makes the special forces good has to do with training.

Yes and so is the para course, that`s why you see other regiments wearing the beret but with there own insignia.Example Airbourne light Artillary wear the para beret. That contradictes your argument.SF forces training is only available to service personnel and once there training is complete they wear the uniform of that regiment they are not attached to that unit. You can walk of the street into your local careers office and within two months be on the Marines training course.SAS,SBS selection is only available to service personnel and backed up with a recommendation from there CO that they are potential SF soliders.Any CO is intitled not to recommend that person which will mean they will not be put forward as a possible candidate. They can appeal but that is not always the best course of action. When you have been badged in the regiment(SAS) your pay is adjusted to the SF pay scale which is only around £200 more per month for a trooper.SF pay is only available to SAS,SBS and a small amount of specialist units ie Para Pathfinders and Cammanchio.

Do you always like to have the last say.Marines are not uncoventional they are a physical unit that like the paras adopt a differant method of dropping in on the party. You name me one theatre of conflict that the excistance of Marines was kept out of the limelight until after hosilities ended?.The Marines are used around the coastal areas. That is the only differance between them and anyother infantry unit.

True, but considering the fact that American and British SF collaberate to such a degree, it is safe to assume training will be very similar. Then you need to consider varying fitness levels, and thus, performance over time. I do, however, believe, that the SBS are more highly trained than the SEALs when it comes to maritime counter-terrorism, as they spend more time training on this idea, and they have developed still classified methods of scaling oil rigs, etc.

You may want to come down to Credenhill, find the local pub and start a conversation with some good looking fit tanned guys in the bar and give them your opinion on the meaning of SF and that you believe the Marines should join the club.
