So many posters (me included) are eager to point out Israels many atrocities but become silent when Israel does something positive. I think everyone should know this is something they do not HAVE to do and I for one think it is a good thing.

While it's good that Israel has taken this step, I can hardly consider this a good action on behalf of Israel. A good action would be to release all political prisoners.

Would you praise a kidnapper for allowing their victim to call home? Would you praise a rapist for allowing their victim to have a drink of water before continuing the rape?

Of course not. but It is something they do not have to do. It is a simple kindness that should not go unnoticed. Of course it may be only to say Shalit doesn't get a phone call. Lets see if Israel turns it into a PR ploy.

I don't see it as kindness that should be praised. If a rapist decides to let a minute go without punching his/her victim in the mouth, it isn't kindness. Israel will not get any praise from me until they doing something worth praising for. Prisoner exchange: praise. Prisoner release: praise. Withdraw from Gaza: praise. A telephone call from hostages/political prisoners: no praise... How about more condemnation.
