puberty, more than likely.

it's not just a biblical issue, it was just the way it was, way back when.
if you weren't a child anymore, you were an adult, and you got married.
and there were so many other factors, many of them economic.

these days, we understand adolescence to be a very important stage of growth and development, the no-man's land between childhood and adulthood.
