Hi ATS!

I was browsing the Solar Archives amongst several telescopes and came accross some recent anomolies I'd like to get people's ideas on.

I am under the impression that there is no way these are JPEG artifacts...

First up, an animation I compiled of something that makes it's debut from the right side of the STEREO Behind Hl1 Solar Telescope... and then leaves the same route...

This looks like some sort of jet.... two smaller jet like fillaments appear at 45 degree angles to the main jet before it fades back off of the picture.

What do you guys think it is?

Next up is a phenominon that occured on two different days in June, each recorded by different Telescopes.

STEREO AHEAD Hl1 June 25: this frame developed looking like this. The previous frame and to this one, as well as the after it both developed clearly. What on Earth caused this ANOMALIE?

COR2 6/30/2010: 5 days later, COR2 recorded one single frame, once again between two perfectly clear frames, that revealed an anomaly similar to the June 25th event.

These sure don't look like JPEG artifacts. more like a material of some sort.

Any Ideas?

In comparison, the first anomaly occured within a window that has the second anomaly that occured on 6/25 embeded within the timeline of the mysteriously appearing jet-like object.

Could that Jet-like flare in the first image be the flash of something that exploded?, and could the second image that looks like streaks of debris are flying across the Lens view be actual detonation ejecta rom that explosion?

Well, I don't really know enough about this stuff to make any conclusions...but that first animation definitely is weird...I have no idea what it could be...very nice, S&F...

is it comet mcnaught in the first animation perhaps?

In the HI1 image from STEREO behind we are seeing Jupiter at the very edge of the field of view. If you go back to earlier in June you'll see it crossing from left to right. It performed a similar (but more spectacular) show last year (Jan. 30 - Feb. 2).

Stop it , i aint buying anymore of your mainstream science

Its getting really old.

Phage, it isn't marked "2" (or is it the second one?), but maybe it would be nice to see that more "spectacular" show you mention anyway, earlier in June, not so long ago?

Thanks. I edited the post.
Here it is.

Actually, this one is Venus. Same effect but much brighter. That's Mercury getting "zapped". (It's lens flare).

Thanks for the link Chad!

it appearss that the image of Hl1 with all the streaks in it has been explained as an imact of micro meteorites upon the telescope's shield, fragmenting parts of it, while the rest of the micro meteorite swarm zips post the lens as streaks... They even supplied an image that closely resembles the one I posted!...

Occasionally one will see bright blobs or streaks appearing in the STEREO coronagraph images. These have been seen before by the SOHO mission, and are caused by micrometeorite impacts knocking off small pieces of the multi-layer insulation blankets which are wrapped around the spacecraft. These small debris particles are brightly illuminated by the Sun, and are easily seen by the coronagraphs if they wander into the field of view. They are tremendously out-of-focus, and often appear as "donut" shapes in the COR1 and COR2 telescopes because of the central occulter in these telescopes. The bigger the piece of debris appears, the closer it is to the telescope. Because the COR1 and COR2 images are generally built up from a series of images, the same piece of debris will often show up multiple times

as well as show what such an anomaly would look like with several other telescopes..

WOW..

that shot looks like it's showing the galactic center in the background... I never seen that shown before on the Hl1 telescope, will have to look more often lol !

These are really getting wierd!

zroth's explanation seems to be right on target, and might explain what the original anomalies are...

They are by products from the comet McNault's swing around the sun!

It was at exactly the time the flare was recorded that McNault was making it's axial swing around the sun! the flare is the comet's tail, and the streaking objects are the results of the telescope going through the debris tail of the comet!

I'm pretty sure this prognosis is correct!...

Comet c/2009 R1 (McNaught) has a very highly inclined orbit (77º). when it crosses the plane of the Solar System in a day or two it will be on the far side of the Sun. It did not and will not, nor will its tail, get anywhere near either of the STEREO satellites.
