New Delhi, India (CNN) -- A massive new terminal at New Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport is being touted as a testament to India's economic prowess.
The sprawling five million square foot building was officially opened Saturday by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress Party President Sonia Gandhi.
Complete with imported granite floors, huge white columns fitted with expensive speakers, 63 elevators, 95 immigration counters and a state of the art security and baggage system, Terminal 3 is also home to India's first transit hotel.

Considering India gained it's independence like 50-60yrs ago that's pretty impressive to build a nation at such a level. Granted lot of work still has to be done it other fields but still very impressive.

I'm really impressed specially keeping in mind Pakistan it's neighbor which gained it's independence at same time is on the verge of breakdown. Both are like polar opposite.

Quite interesting.. It does indeed show their upcoming economic power. However, with such a massive growing population, wouldn't it be wiser to improve other, more vital infrastructure?..

Yes,

They have one of the highest mortality rates for pregnant women and new born babies in the world.

I wonder why we are still giving them aid.

Must be to boost the Indian President and Prime Ministers image of being a super power whilst their poorer people suffer, no better than Kim Jung Il in reality.

Poor people suffer everywhere. I do not know where you live but i know 100 percent that despite the fact that there are poor homeless people who live in awful conditions. And yet life does not stop and there is new stadium built/planned,for example.
This is indeed wrong, but India is not unique. They have to boost the economy and building airport for tourists/trade is going to help it more then helping needy.
And by the way, your comparison with N.Korea is totally wrong. Poor people can choose leave India to look for better life elsewhere. Poor people from N.Korea are not that lucky.

It's not ours to decide.

Maybe there are many construction jobs being created, which will help the poor much more than a handout.

Regardless, it is India's money and they can do what they wish with it.

We are suffering austerity measures but have 'ring fenced' foreign development aid. As a part of that we are giving millions of pounds of aid each year to a nuclear power (India).

Its an outrage. A nuclear power with a space program should not get aid.
