HBO documentary about interviews with conservatives in America regarding their opinion about Barack Obama during the 2008 presidential campaign and election.

I know it's about a year late, but I thought this was an interesting video. It's interesting how these McCain supporters during the campaign sound a lot like what I keep reading on this forum every single day.

This video seems like a cross section of the typical conservative and what the conservative view has become since the election.

It's 45 minutes long, but it's an interesting look at the Right in this country and what really in my opinion started this whole recent political madness mess we see today.

(Yes I know, it's a film by Alexandra Pelosi, Nancy Pelosi's daughter, but I think she covered the Right in a fair and balanced way, by Fox News Standards)

Thanks, I'm watching it right now. This makes me feel so out of place - I wouldn't have been comfortable at a rally for either party. All the red/white/blue costumes, the junior high choirs singing God bless America reminds me (sadly) of the "I love America"rallies Jerry Falwell did back in the late 70's.
It's as if to be a REAL Republican you have to spout bible verses, be pro-life, recite the pledge ad nauseum. The chanting of USA, USA, USA, USA smacks of the Nuremburg rallies. It's CREEPY I tell you!
On the other hand I would have been as out of place at an Obama rally, I'm pro-second amendment, I don't believe in man-made global warming, huge welfare programs, etc.
I think both parties have actively colluded to polarize Americans into opposing factions that cannot even have a calm discussion between them. The pushing by the media of the stereotypical Republican image was plainly meant to make Obama and Democrats the winners in the last election. These rightwingers have some legitimate complaints but as always, the media will craftily edit their soundbites to make them sound like idiots. Admittedly, not a difficult task but hardly fair and balanced reporting.
Then you have the FOX network that makes all Democrats look like evil socialist Ivy league elitists.
I still want to find some common ground as Americans, surely we have some, somewhere........
Who the hell made country music the official music of the Republican party?
It gets lonely out here in reality, that's why I joined ATS


Oh God, I just got to the part where the guy starts crying about how "We're not top dog anymore and you can't go to titty bars or they think you're evil"

If you ask me, this group of neo-con religious zealots constitute a threat to the national security of the United States far greater than any so-called foreign terrorist group.

The reason they pose a larger threat is due to the fact that these wing nuts reside right here in our own neighborhoods.

You know, over the years Alex Jones has made a lot of money frightening people by telling them that their government has plans to declare marshall law and lock them up in FEMA camps.

Well, the more I see of this Republican/Tea Party movement, the more I realize that there may indeed be a need for these FEMA camps at some point in the future, specifically to lock up these nuts before they take America back, 200 years that is.

Just take a look at the leaders of their movement; Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Sarah Palin, Sean Hannity, Rand Paul, Sharon Angle...etc. I don't think that a company even the size of "Planters" could come up with a bigger bag of mixed nuts!

Oh yeah, did I mention that they are, without a doubt, the world's worst losers. They would rather use what little political influence they have left to obstruct the passage of every piece of legislation presented rather than attempting to offer something constructive to the process.

They don't care if America fails so long as Obama fails along with her! Could anyone be less American?

Insert republican bash here... Insert Democratic bash here... Isn't it plain to see that both sides use rhetoric to influence you to be their mouth piece against the other side? I do not know any Republicans like this, and the ones that you see on TV are the worst of the bunch. Similar to Democrats. Most just want a median solution not communism.

Don't fall for this type of video. ATSers should be smart enough to know that there is a difference between the edited version of a political ideology and real life. Remember real life? It is all the stuff that happens between Youtube clips and political campaign commercials.

You may not know any republicans like these in California but I live in Texas and I know a lot of republicans exactly like those portrayed in this video. After all, we're the home of Rick Perry, nuttiest governor in America.

These people would reinstate slavery if they thought they could get away with it. By the way, isn't that what minimum wage is, legalized slavery?

Yea... I moved to California from UTAH. Yea, that Utah. I have seen the best and worst of both parties living in the two most politically polarized states in the union.

And, do some research...

By 1864, the Country had grown weary of the long and bloody Civil War. Hundreds of thousands of the countries' best and bravest young men had fallen on the fields of Bull Run, Antietam, Shiloh, and countless more. Many began to think that the war was not worth it, and the price of freedom too great. The Republican Presidential Candidate Abraham Lincoln thought no price was too great for the abolition of slavery and the creation of a society in which a man was not judged by the color of his skin. Unfortunately, after four long years of war, Lincoln's support was dropping fast, and people were looking for a way out of the war.

With this backdrop, the Democratic Party chose General George McClellan to be their Presidential Candidate at the Chicago National Convention in 1864. The Democratic Party Platform presented a plan of "Compromise with the South", which became known as "The Chicago Platform". While on its surface the Chicago Platform was seductive in that it promised an immediate cessation of hostilities, and a restoration of the union. What was unsaid in the platform, but clearly implied, was that the "compromise" would be to agree to make permanent the institution of slavery in exchange for an end to the Civil War and restoration of the Union. In other words, the Democratic party was ready to "Sell Out" the enslaved, in order to stop further loss of white lives. This is reflected in McClellan's acceptance speech, where he stated:

"The reestablishment of the Union, in all its integrity, is and must continue to be the indispensable condition in any settlement."

If they are McCain supporters how "right" can they possibly be?

Bush, McCain and Obama are all essentially the same guy.

PA got renewed. War still rages. We're still bankrupt. Still taxed to holy hell.

And no current or future policy of this administration is going to change any of that.

The people in this video are just mindless drones. No different than the people who ran out and voted for Obama.

While that was true at the time, this is now, and this GOP does not resemble the GOP of the past, nor does the Democratic party resemble the Democratic party of the past either.

From what I have read on ATS this video was quite the accurate cross section of the opinions of conservatives across the country, these same exact phrases are still parroted today.

It's just interesting to see the origin of this hate and fear.

Not buying it!
The Republicans have caused infinitely more damage to this country than the Democrats!
You can spin all the " no differences" stuff you want, GW Bush, the Neocons and Republicans RAPED this nation, robbed it blind in plain sight of the electorate, engineered a phony war STOLE a great deal of wealth from the middle class to redistribute among the already rich!
That was NOT the case under Clinton or previous Democrats. No, Democrats are not perfect, JEEzuz H, but they are NOT EVIL like Bush & company.

No the democrats are better at hiding their misdeeds w/ the help of the msm. Remember the investigation of Hilary Clinton's real estate deals? Or how about who gave BP the drilling rights on the current mess? You are naive to think that the dems are blameless. They just have better pr is all.

Exactly! The ideology behind being conservative or liberal has been so utterly perverted over the decades that 90% of the time i hear someone call themselves either liberal or conservative, i find by asking them their views on certain issues that they simply don't adhere to either ideology. These faux movements that so many gullible people latch on to are the bane of society, both of these 'modern' conservatives and liberals movements infuriate me equally...although the supposed liberals probably annoy me a tad more if im being honest.

Couldn't agree more. My point was that you can make a statement about one parties faults you can show the same faults for the other side. They are all just politicians. If you (the larger you, not whatukno) feel that you need political doctrine to fuel your own inability to make decisions on a case by case basis than go ahead. But I agree with Solomons writing...
