It's one thing for a coterie of liberals at a late-night Washington soirée to say that George W. Bush was the worst president in their lifetimes.

It's another thing when the same is said by the nation's 238 leading presidential scholars, who have been polled annually for the last 28 years.

President Bush ranked worst among modern presidents -- and the fifth worst in history, according to the poll by the Siena Research Institute. Ranking first? President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who led the country from 1933 until his death in 1945.

President Roosevelt served four terms, the longest of any president in history. US presidents became limited to two terms after US states ratified the 22nd Amendment to the US constitution in 1951.

I knew it! I have been saying this all along. President Bush was the worse President by far, IMO. I used to cringe when I would hear the Bush admin saying things like "history will judge us correctly". Yeah right, Bush was nothing but evil, murdering young patriots for money and resources and shifting every policy against the American people. Bush was the anti-thesis of the American spirit and what America should be about. Bush was our worst enemy, not the Taliban or Al Qaeda.

Anyway, although this ranking won't help to fix any of the atrocities committed, at least you don't have to hear from fake conservatives or neo-conservatives that only liberals and libertarians hate Bush.

Funny thing about history is that it's usually quite a bit down the road that one can look through that prism and use it to actually judge, not just a few years.

Last year, I made a post that had the poll results from 2009. You can look at them here if you'd like. Back then, he was ranked as the seventh worst president.

Now, I'm just curious how a man that's been out of office for two years is able to slip down two spots. Maybe the pollees are blaming Bush for stuff that Obama's messed up on.

No, it's just that people are realizing the damage that this wolf in sheep's clothing has done. I'm not saying that Obama is any better, only that he won't rank the same since he is the first black President. It would be politically incorrect to do so.

However, Obama is just continuing the policies of Bush, while Bush himself set an entirely new standard for American politics. Before Bush W., politicians had to at least pretend that they had America's best interest at heart. Bush W. changed how the game is played, and it's a change that is not good for the American people, that's for sure. I don't think there is another President in recent history, who was so obvious at screwing the American people, for corporate interests of course.

This is great !
I completely agree with this !

What's even more funny is that limbough and hannity (2 of the four horsemen of the asspocolypse) claim that it's a FACT that everyone including scholars and the people know that obama is the worst president. I can't wait until they claim all 238 scholars are wrong, lying or are part of the massive democrat conspiracy to destroy the US.

Any proof to back up your claim about Limbaugh and Hannity?

Good find airspoon!

I do have one question though. There have been many discussions on just how bad a president that Wilson was, yet the scholars rank him as the 6th or 8th best president of all time

Bush and Scholar in the same sentence?

Man, quit giving Bush a hard time. The man was clearly very stupid, but was he really ever in charge of the country - did he ever actually make any decisions?

It's a pretty naive thing to think that any president of modern history has run the country since, hmm, let's say JFK. That's like saying Obabo is running the country, he's just the dude carrying the can.

Personally I think Bush should be given his own sitcom.

I heard them say it first hand on the radio.
They either misrepresent the truth or outright lie every day. Listen to their programs...it's REALLY obvious.

As example, last week limbough was upset because bp contributed to obama when he was running for president. limbough stated that obama is stabbing bp in the back because bp bought him off but he isn't playing ball. The guy isn't anything more then the publicity arm of the GOP. He'll lie about anything and everything to further his handlers careers.

Bush stupid? I don't think so. I think it was all an act so that we wouldn't believe all of the inevitable conspiracy theories. Check this out:

The fact they have Woodrow Wilson ranked 8th best president and FDR #1, proves nothing. Not that Bush Jr. ISN'T one of the worst presidents ever, but to me this looks more like a 'which president do you think did the best job? survey.

Again Harding is put in the bottom three for no legitimate reason. These scholars claim Wilson brought us the roaring 20's, but in fact left with the worst statistical depression ever experienced in the United States. Harding came in, cut back on government programs, taxes, and let the free market work (or whatever it was during the infancy of the Federal Reserve). It took one year to get us out of that, all thanks to one of the most corrupt presidents ever. Weird huh?

If they can justify putting George W. Bush at the bottom for causing this recession than by god Wilson should be at the very bottom as well. Same with Coolidge, Hoover, and FDR. Another coincidence, is that Hoover, Coolidge, and Harding were Republicans yet the two that did the most damage economically, and got us into both world wars were Democrats and they're ranked in the top 10.

The only thing I take away from this is that Founding Father presidents, FDR, Truman, Eisenhower, Wilson, Lincoln, and Teddy Roosevelt's reputation, will always be #1-10 and Harding, Buchanen, and Johnson will always be the 3 worst presidents. That's the way it's been since they began taking these surveys in 1948. I doubt they'd change dramatically now.

Timeline of Scholastic Rankings

An hilarious observation from this says that 'Imagination' was one of the categories they ranked presidents as! Handling of the US economy ranked #1? FDR of course! Sure all throughout his presidency it never got better until we entered WW2, but who counts that? He may not have caused it, but he sure as hell didn't fix it either.

Obama's ranking of 15 just proves this is a farce.

What exactly qualifies someone as a "Presidential Scholar?"

Is being a member of the ACLU a prerequisite? I would not be surprised.

I would like a list of these "scholars" and see what they have in common.

This is beyond stupid.

I am not a fan of Bush 1 or 2. Worst? hardly. Crappy? Definately.
How the hell did the "messiah" rank so high when

1. The maggot isnt finished yet (plenty more time to continue his downward trend.

2. Has done NOTHING positive for the People. Health Care is a joke and anyone that thinks otherwise is blind or on dope.

3. He is George Bush 3.0.

Or maybe Carter who helped to gut our military and economy?

How about Johnson who kept us in Vietnam?

Truman who had no clue of what to do in Korea (sound familiar?).

R or D doesnt matter. they all suck, just some suck more.

The fact that FDR made top tells alot. I imagine Wilson is high up too.

Wouldnt you think that the person that gave us the Fed, and Taxes would be "popular"? Socialist "experts".

The harder you screw the people, the higher you rank.

As I said before, this study is BRAVO SIERRA!

Bush II was absolutely terrible, I completely agree with that.
Obama will be right up there in the top 10 after this whole mess is over, just give it a couple of years and you'll see. He's done nothing but expand on the GWB agenda, which immediately tells me that he can't really be that much better. He hasn't done one single REAL positive thing for this country yet.

I hate them both.

Obama ranked 15th!! Ahahahahaha.

Thank you for the excellent laugh before my cup of coffee this morning. As for ranking past presidents, wow that sounds like a load of fun. Too bad it doesn't change any mistakes they made or help us out in the mess our current administration has us in.

Just remember that Obama ranked so hi because he is the first black president and he isn't yet done with his term. I'm sure as time goes on, he may drop some, but unfortunately since it is not politically correct to talk bad about the first black anything, he won't see the same slack as anyone else. It would be uncouth to talk badly of Obama, even 100 years from now.

The fact that FDR is consistently voted the top 1 or 2 also invalidates this. The man was a borderline dictator who set the stage for nearly all of our current problems by making people rely too much on the government for everything and to solve all their problems, and for massively expanding the federal government.

People drool over his "New Deal" but if you ask any economist or historian they will tell you that the "New Deal" was a total failure and actually prolonged the Depression by up to SEVEN YEARS. Thank God for World War II because that's why really ended the Great Depression.

It doesn't invalidate it. You may not agree with it but it is valid, as 238 scholars independently decided on it. Of course, not everyone is going to agree with all of their choices, I surely don't. However, I some-what agree with their assessment of Bush W., though I may even rank him lower.

As far as FDR doing the most damage with his "New Deal", I would have to disagree though I certainly agree that it was bad. As far as the two worst actions of US Presidents, I would have to say that number one would be Woodrow Wilson with his signing of the Federal Reserve Act of 1913. This basically handed our country over to the bankers, ultimately turning us into wage-slaves, trapped by an inevitable debt based currency and the imposition of the income tax. The second worst action by a President, IMO, would be the passing of the Patriot Act by GWB, a piece of legislation that destroyed any last hope of liberty that we might have had and setting a precedent of authoritarian rule for the generations that come after us.
