This clip comes from the Groom Lake aircraft "ground frequency." The tones sound like "touch tones", AKA DTMF. Following each DTMF burst is a bit of goofy audio at a much reduced level. The file is raw wave (no compression).

Well, that's all I know. Happy deciphering!

Groom Lake audio puzzle

Someone had a mike with the VOX turned on? I immediately thought of someone dialing a number with a phone on handsfree, and a TV was playing in the background!

Someone forgot to stop transmitting when they phoned someone. And they were watching TV

54019...9...99...7366973...3...(99...7366973...3)

Here are the frequency pairs and corresponding DTMF numbers in that audio clip:
766&1327=5
765&1198=4
936&1325=0
684&1198=1
850&1463=9
pause
848&1464=9 (quiet with static and TV)
pause
850&1463=9
850&1462=9
pause
850&1198=7
682&1462=3
764&1462=6
765&1463=6
850&1463=9
849&1199=7
684&1462=3
pause
686&1461=3 (quiet)
pause
repeats part of the audio beyond this point.

So, to recap, here's the number sequence:
54019...9...99...7366973...3...(99...7366973...3)

The obvious phone number in here is 736-6973. ##5-4019 is probably supposed to be one too, but it's cut off at the beginning.

UPDATE: (702) 736-6973 is an unpublished number in Las Vegas. Anyone wanna give it a call?

Thanks for the DTMF decode. The number could be on the DSN (Defense Switched Network).

I'm trying to visualize how the Groom ground frequency is used. It doesn't sound as if the person on the ground is using a traditional means of radio comms, either headset of microphone. The voice tends to have echo, as if the person on the ground has a cheesy speaker-phone. Now the DTMF sounds like direct modulation, not something picked up by a microphone, so perhaps literally it is a phone with speaker-phone.

Raytheon makes such a unit:

I listened to it three times. It immediately came off as sounding eerie to me. It did somewhat remind me of William One Sac's soundclip posted in a thread of his about what was left on his answering machine. Not exact but similiar at first. Although admittedly its been a long while since listening to WOS's clip.

I'll post the link for you, in that it may yield some information relating to this.

As promised: www.abovetopsecret.com...

Hope it helps, if not at least it will be a good read.

edit to add: Just listened to them both again, not as similiar as I thought. But, I'm sure someone will be able to determine which keys are being dialed by the audio characteristics. And if someone can extract the dialtones and slow down the recording I think it would be possible to possibly make out what the background (TV?) noise is saying.

Fantastic work shmuu! Can't wait to find out who was being dialed...

Cheers

First off, how did you obtain this? Secondly, how did you authenticate it?

I mean....you could've easily have said this was a NASA transmission to the ISS too.

Interesting but weak thread.

The audio is authentic. I camped out at a location where with the right gear I can monitor Groom radio signals, even on the ground.

Eventually I will do a post with more Groom radio intercepts including the whole session where this ground audio was cut out. I uploaded this audio as PCM so the DTMF could be decoded.

Hah, yeah, someone call it, please.

I don't think it's illegal to randomly call someone, but I could easily be wrong. Either way, I don't want to do it since I've already done more active Area 51 reconnaissance (the flyby video) than I probably should as a defense contractor.

I called it today. I gave up after 10 rings. I suspect the number is DSN rather than POTS.

Technically Groom isn't in the 702 area code, but one assumes they have a foreign exchange. It could be a 775 area code number.
