Russia adopts new immigration law

A new migrant law designed to make life in Russia easier for expat specialists has been put into force.

The new regulation exempts highly-skilled workers with a yearly income of more than 2 million roubles ($66,000) from migrant quotas, orders migration agencies to finish all paperwork for such workers within 2 weeks, simplifies immigration procedures for specialists’ family members, grants work permits up to 3 years at once, and eases procedures for obtaining citizenship.

This comes as part of the state’s initiative to attract more foreign talent to the country.

“The migration of highly-skilled workers is the priority in the new law on migration. This law is the basis for the future of Russian policy toward migrants as a whole. Russia is increasingly becoming dependent on its migrant workforce, primarily because of the demographic gap. And the problems are just beginning: the gaps may grow and the economy can suffer,” Konstantin Poltaranin, spokesperson of the Federal Migration Service, told RT.

The new law exempts highly skilled workers who make over $66,000 a year from certain regulations. Pretty different compared to what's going on in the US.

Russia looks like it's trying to bring in some of the best skilled workers as possible. Maybe the country will start having a better economy because of this? Possibly. Some new technology possibly coming out later on by attracting scientists/engineers? Hopefully good tech comes out.

i think its a great idea, and it makes sense to me. its pretty much what we didi to get ahead back in the day lol. good find.

Seems to me Russia is truly striving to compete against the Western Powers.. and I gotta admit, they are doing a pretty good job. I rarely hear bad news out of Russia, and most of what I hear shocks me that Russia puts her people before Western powers think of their own..

Granted, Russia is still rife with problems, some of which won't be fixed for many years to come.... I don't think I'd mind visiting there, and who knows, maybe migrating there as the US falls apart at the seems.
