Hydrogen Explosion Damages Univ. of Missouri Biochemistry Building

A hydrogen gas explosion at the University of Missouri biochemistry lab has injured four people today (June 28, 2010). One victim has life threatening injuries.

The explosion happened around 2pm today on the third floor of Schweitzer Hall on the Columbia campus. The University said they believe the explosion was caused by a "spontaneous combustion of gases" in a research experiment.

The names of those who were injured have not been released yet, a campus spokesman says he doesn't know if the victims involved in the incident were professors, students or graduate researchers.

One campus worker said she heard the explosion several blocks away. The building where the explosion occurred had the windows blown out and melted window blinds.

The blast happened after 2 p.m. Monday on the third floor of Schweitzer Hall on the Columbia campus.

The university said in a statement that the explosion is believed to have been caused by a "spontaneous combustion of gases" that were being used in a research experiment.

I hope all those hurt will be ok. I also am speculating that this could mean there is some progress on creating cheap and plentiful hydrogen. Or could it be a way to stop the research?

yes, it certainly sounds like research into "hoho" for water powered cars. gotta stabilize it, or like my friends playing around, you get a large bulge in your bonnet---where his head was a few minutes before.
