Census workers brave threats, duck

Census workers across the country have been shot, attacked with bats, killed in car accidents, robbed, threatened with axes, and bitten by dogs and, in one case, a duck.

The tally, which is substantially higher than the 180 assaults and threats registered during a comparable period during the 2000 census, includes seven workers who died in car accidents, 11 incidents of shots being fired, 86 cases of workers being threatened with guns, axes or other weapons, and at least four robberies.

In Millcreek, Utah, a census crew leader went to the rescue of a woman with a baby in a stroller who was fighting off an angry duck, only to be bitten about 15 times on her open-toed sandal

The Rough-and-Tumble Life of a Census Worker

According to a report from AFP, Census workers have been assaulted more than 400 times as they go door to door to follow up on homeowners and apartment dwellers who didn't return their mandated census forms. A total of 409 incidents have been reported in just two months, including 132 threats that included a weapon and a dozen workers being "held against their will."

Way to go America. The crazy FEARFEST that has been spewed from people like Glen Beck and others against census workers...most of which are just trying to put some FOOD ON THE TABLE in a major recession...are being attacked.

Some people need to get a grip. It's not Nazi's showing up at your damn door. Quit being paranoid maniacs.

No You need to get a grip

when a Census worker shows up at the door
and sticks his foot in the door or harasses the
hell outta people or intimidates people like the
Gestapo use to, then they get what they deserve.
They are no longer a census worker but have become
a common criminal.

A new study of U.S. Department of Commerce documents now shows that the Census Bureau complied with an August 4, 1943, request by Treasury Secretary Henry Morgenthau for the names and locations of all people of Japanese ancestry in the Washington, D.C., area, according to historian Margo Anderson of the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee and statistician William Seltzer of Fordham University in New York City

Still think its nothing but a fearfest? I don't blame the people for fighting back. Every citizen should know the Constitution and uphold those laws. No job is worth the money if it violates the Constitution. An enumeration is all it calls for. A simple head count.

This is encouraging news!
It shows that there are more people getting beligerant about the way the goverment is running the country, as well as indicates the readiness of citizens to resort to whatever means nessessary to make their point.
No longer do the citizzens just laydown for treading on....perhaps coupled with the new second ammendment decision this willingness to get physical will give the PTB some pause before attempting to put their NWO agenda through.....think again boys....!

The more of your posts I read the more I think you are either a complete idiot or a political tool. It is one of the two no offense.

You try and tie Glen Beck to anything bad in this country. WHY? I think you might want to go and get some counseling for the deep seated fear you have of this man. It is pathetic at best.

Readers should see your posts for what they are fear mongering. That's right the very thing you cry about is the very thing you do day in and day out.

What do you expect when some racist comes to your door asks are you white black or hispanic?
Or asks, how many times you were able to successfully reproduce!

Ok, so this is an excuse for violence? Just tell them you have no intention of filling the census out, and close the door.

They are not common criminals, they are trying to do a job. If I don't like what you do, barring something illegal, does that give me the right to shoot ya, or sic my dog on ya?

I don't think so!

David you're right, these tin hats are buffoons.

#1. The Census is mandated by the Constitution. It was put in to make sure EVERYBODY has fair representation in our government. Remember "We the people..."?

#2. Census workers are hired to manage the area where they live, so they are your very close neighbors. How neighborly of people to sick their dogs on them. Perhaps they will return the favor when the next day their dog mysteriously goes missing. After all they probably pass their house every morning.

#3. Do you really think the only way the government has of finding you is a questionnaire? Not the license dept, utility company, police records, Social Security office, or a hundred other places that have WAAAAAY more info on you than your race, and how many voters live at your address. Really!!?

No it is for the UN
They gave your GPS address to the UN

2010 World Population and Housing Census Programme
unstats.un.org...

No. Title 13 also restricts the Census Bureau from sharing information about an individual, household, or place of residence with any agency, public or private.

Census breaks Title 13 law by sharing with UN!

Glad to see more Americans standing up for thier private property rights! When idiots working for "private corporations" come to our doors posing as government agents damn right they're going to get asked to leave post haste and if they don't they will be escorted off by what ever means is required to remove them.

So far the only post that answers the OP. And a great post at that . Hit the nail on the head so to speak.

The problem with the blanket statement of "get a grip" is that you are assuming that all of the census workers are behaving in a manner that is non-threatening.

I know the gent who came to my house was a gentleman. I did not let him in the house and we did the business on the front porch, but he was very polite and respectful.

Others have been aggressive, acting like mini G-men and demanding access to homes, information, including that information that is voluntary.

You get a million folks knocking on doors demanding information and some of them are going to push the wrong buttons and get their asses kicked. I don't care what they are asking you

It cracks me up when ever some mentally challenged person uses this argument. So then if they already have way more information the then the private corporation known as Census Bureau gets then why waste time and money having low IQ morons harass you at your own property hmmmmm?

Any fool knows that you can't go walking around strange neightborhoods and knocking on doors these days. Anyone that would do this job is just plain stupid, taking a high risk, not to mention they are spying for Big Brother!

Onlly 400?

Would have thought it would have been much higher than that. Not saying should be, but that's a lot of houses and their a lot of crazy people in the world. On an aside, I received two letters telling me the sacred form would soon be in the mail, then the form came in, I put down a number and sent it back that day. The next day I get a letter warning me to send in my paperwork? Two days after that, another census form.

Two weeks later, when a census worker came down my PRIVATE road, and apologized for all of the random paperwork as they were having some computer problems, she needed the information from me again.

Some interesting dialogue followed and she said something about court action. Still waiting for that letter.

So yes, I could see why people are upset about the waste, now fraud (read that the other day) and being harassed with their tax money, really shocked it's only 400.

Iv never had that happen to me. In anycase I have no doubt the are afew cases, but then again we can account 'bad cases' for police officers, fireman, you name it. This is just a generalization to further fuel this fearfest. The vast majority of census workers do not do so.

intimidates people like the
Gestapo

Really? Never seen them act in this manner.

Yes, you want to stop 'illegal lookin' folks down the street or in their houses to ask for their birth certificates, but you have a problem with census workers (because evidently, it requires you to do the same).

Utter hypocrisy.

Wait...

86 cases of workers being threatened with guns, axes or other weapons

Chicago Sun Times, June 26, 2010
...from the same:

U.S. Census Bureau officials say they have tallied about 252 cases in which temporary census enumerators have been harmed or threatened since the door-to-door phase of the national population count began in late April. About 635,000 door-to-door workers were hired to follow up with those who didn't mail in their census questionnaires.

Now, from Time Magazine, (from the AFP on June 21, 2010)

A total of 409 incidents have been reported in just two months, including 132 threats that included a weapon

HOLY CRAP, A TIMEWARP HAS BEEN FOUND!!! By my math, 157 incidents have unhappened in the last 5 days! At this rate by mid-July the Census folks will be reporting reception of milk and cookies at every house they stop at.

Honestly, thank you so much David for posting this and including two news sources with information from the same base source (the Census board itself) which doesn't gel together. You have perfectly demosntrated why many of us have elevated the middle finger towards this Census 2010. If these asses cannot even get their own story straight, how in the blue hell can we possibly entrust them with so much as a moment of our valuable time and information?

Also, in reference to your little soliloquy about Glen Beck, let's assume the higher total the Census department invented (or maybe the press made up, who knows these days) is accurate. 409 incidents... Hmmm... 635,000 door-to-door census takers... double Hmmmm....
That's 0.64 incidents per 1,000 census workers. My God, how atrocious that is, that poor 64 hundredths of a person our tax dollars are paying to waste their time and pry into our lives! Oh, and the value of 0.64 incidents per 1,000 workers (or 64 incidents per 100,000 workers)? FAR lower than every single city on this list of crime rates for major US cities:
en.wikipedia.org...
You are 32 times more likely to be a victim of a violent crime visiting St Louis, MO than you are working for the Census, trespassing and prying into people privacy. Seems like a whole lot of Hooplah over a virtual non-story likely being used by agenda driven people who can't find anything better to do with their time than attack people like Glen Beck who encourage Americans to start thinking like Americans again instead of the automaton yes-bots so many have become.

Coming into this thread was totally worth it, if just for that paragraph.

Two, I assume grown women fighting with a duck and the duck won.
Brilliant.

Apparently the duck was a huge Glen Beck fan? Odd, considering that ducks are natural enemies of the Fox.

(and yeah, I found it very interesting that they managed to include things like the duck incident and car accidents in this article, as if either of them have a damn thing to do with the public's natural and understandable distrust of this census.)
