Perhaps not related, but I'll post it anyway:

MOSCOW (PTI): Russia is beginning a 10-day unprecedented military drill in the eastern parts of the country involving tens of thousands of troops, air and naval combat units, seen as Moscow's largest post-Soviet wargames close to the borders with China.

Why would you start a third war in the middle east without finishing the first two?

If you look at WW2, many of the European countries knew if they didn't put up resistance they would likely stay alive when Hitler invaded them. Only handfuls of the occupied populations tried to cause trouble with or undermine the occupying forces.

In the middle east, it is completely different. They WILL NOT be occupied peacefully. They are too proud a people and many more of them are happier to die standing up to the occupier that submit to "their will". Their grudges are handed down from father to son, so any hope of peace being possible is REMOTE. It's almost laughable that some of the most powerful and richest nations on earth cannot suppress some of the poorest, least equipped countries in the world.

Now to defeat a relatively prosperous, well armed country that is equally negative towards the west will require FAR MORE that what is sitting in the gulf at the moment.

So IMO it's just intimidation tactics and extra protection/defense for Israel.

Before they jump to the conclusion of war with Iran, consider that there are operations still in Iraq, Afganistan and Pakistan. The carriers are often in a group of ships, not on its own:
1 Aircraft Carrier, 2 Guided Missile Cruisers, 2 Anti Aircraft Warships, and 1-2 Anti Submarine Destroyers or Frigates

You forgot the fast attack sub. We had one of those as well. And the News Headline is a tad misleading, an LHA is a carrier of sorts, I guess, but us squids dont like sounding the same as jarheads! Our carrier was WAY BIGGER!

And just to explain a little, when I was in USN, I was on a carrier and our battle group took a month to get across the Pacific and into the gulf, counting our time to go pick up the airwing and doin' figure 8's on the way. When we got on station, we relieved the Carrier group in the Gulf so they could go home. This was in 90's so our job was just to patrol the "NO Fly Zone" in Iraq. Now there was also a Med. Carrier group as well. So you have 2 CBG's in the general area of the Mid East at all times while I was in. Not to mention Diego Garcia's base. So I wouldn't get too excited yet boys and girls. Just sayin.

edgecrusher2199,

My Wife's son is on a DDG that is part of the "Ike Strike" group coming home on normal rotation....unless???

I really hope nothing happens, I live right on the water in Abu Dhabi directly across the Gulf from Iran!!
And you think the GoM states have problems with a bit of oil?

I let you guys know (if I can) when I see the mushroom clouds from my bedroom window!

73's,

Its presence there accounts for Tehran announcing Sunday, June 27 that its "aid ship for Gaza" had been called off, for fear an American military boarding party would intercept the vessel and search it. This would be permissible under the latest UN sanctions punishing the Islamic Republic for its nuclear program.

Interesting. So the carriers are really here to support Israel.

Regardless, the war drums are not beating steadily enough yet. There has to be an "event" of some kind.

Indeed. When the time is right, an obviously-staged pretext outrageous provocation by Iran will take place.

Remember the Maine/Lusitania/Pearl Harbor/Unsan/Gulf of Tonkin/Grenada/Punta Paitilla/Kuwait/9-11/WMDs.

When the U.S. goes to war, it is always because "they started it, and we're here to finish it."

Their reason is "nuke" this time.

They already have the "false flag", I think. They have gone at war with much less than that (Iraq).

I can't agree enough.

It's one of the simplest and most effective ways to win the right to wage war. Make moves that swing both your opposition off balance, and public opinion on side.

Given that more of us are aware of this way of war, when the event occurs will people still fall for it??

Well unfortunately people think with their hearts not their heads.... Image for example if the baby carrier were to be blown up with hundreds of US marines killed.... Do you think people would stand back and go.. "o.k. then lets examine the possibility that this was orchestrated by our own government shall we??"

Of course they won't...

Sad times we live in very sad times...

There seems to be a lot of excited discussion about whether or not this means war. There is little talk about what this would mean for the world. Iran will not be delt with so quickly and easily. If Israel attacks Iran, the Middle East will erupt like a tinder box. Iraq will flare up all over again, and Afghanistan will get even worse. If the West is making the calculation that there is enough resentment in Iran against the current rulers to facilitate a shift to a western-friendly government they have another thought coming. Yes, many in Iran --a beautiful and cultivated country BTW--want change, but they DON'T want Israel and the US to bring it about by military force. The West will lose all sympathy among the progressives if they attack the country.

People, dont forget that the UN just sanctioned Iran. This sanction has to play out before the US would get support to attack Iran.

As far as i know, you people have debated this event way out of proportion. You people only read the news and shape it the way you want people to view it.

When have members on ATS ever gotten their personal views right about matters like this?

According to members on ATS. North and South Korea should have been at war right now. And Israel should have attacked Iran 5 years ago.

Precisely. People are talking about Israel attacking Iran's nuclear facilities for years now. Even in case of the Korean crisis, all the hard talk that was unleashed by Lee Myung Bak was to gain popularity and support during the regional elections. Selling a new conflict to the people without any emotional justification or trigger would be difficult for the TPTB.

Someone mentioned earlier the Russians have distanced themselves from Iran over the past few weeks with the sale of the S300 called off.

I think we may see yet another U-turn in the Russians if it turns out that the Israelis and or the Americans use Georgia or Azerbaijan for an assault.

They have been in the news today complaining to the UN about unlawful German inspections of cargo bound for Iran. All it takes is for someone to overstep the mark in these inspections and the fuse is lit.

This whole situation is literally on a razors edge, and it is pretty damn scary. I don't think this is the standard doom porn that people look for this is unfortunately something really tangible.

I think the Russian military drill is there as a counter to the US-SK military drill in the area and the high tensions in the Korean peninsula.

They do that to warn the US to not start anything with NK, after all, the smallest of thing could lead to full scale attack by NKorea, leading to an invasion of NK by allied forces.

Kim Jong Il didn't ask for J-10s from China a few weeks ago for nothing. China refused but said that they would go in North Korea to back them up if SK/US tried to invade them.

Russia don't want a unified Korea armed to the teeth by the US on their border...China probably don't want that too. They want the status quo.

The whole thing is a powder-keg. I hope the transition of power goes well in September, but I have a bad feeling.

Not to mention, the economy will probably go nuts around september and that would increase the incentive for the elite to go to war. Not to mention the new NKorean regime will be seen as weak since the new leader is new...

Anyway...bad feeling.

I think the most likely scenario about Iran is this. Israel strikes Iranian nuclear facilities. Iran, like Syria doesn't counter-attack. The whole thing blows over.

Or the carriers are near Iran because ``in case something goes bad`` when US ships start inspecting Iranian ships...

I think this is what the Pentagon thinks. I think they think that Iran won't do squat because they know if they did they would be obliterated.

The carriers in the gulf are there ``just in case``.

Or maybe the Pentagon is nuts and want Iran to sink one of those.

What do you mean? What post? My post about the queen? SCREW THE QUEEN.

The simple concept of ``royalty`` goes against EVERYTHING a freeman stands for.

SCREW THE ROYAL FAMILY, I HOPE THEY ALL DIE OF HORRIBLE CANCER.

I'm against Royalty also,It's an outmoded concept. The Royal family has been a huge drag on the British economy with all the money Parliament has to shell out to those leeches.
