Interesting. Good news for people who watch online porn, it will be condensed and easier to find. Cause porn is just SO hard to locate these days!

(CNN) -- It's a big day for the porn industry.

On Friday, ICANN, the not-for-profit corporation that coordinates the internet's naming system, voted to allow the application of the controversial ".xxx" top-level domain name for sites that display adult content.

The domain, which would need further approval before going live on the internet, would be applied to adult entertainment sites just as ".com" is now.

The .xxx internet suffix, which was first proposed six years ago by ICM Registry, a group that sells domain names, "will provide a place online for adult entertainment providers and their service providers who want to be part of our voluntary self regulatory community," according to that company's news release.

I don't really know how I feel about a new domain classification, I guess it makes sense. I'm not in agreement with conservatives that this lends more legitimacy to the porn industry.

I think it's got all the legitimacy it needs. It's not going to go away anytime soon.

Isn't the internet like 90% porn anyway?

Thats awesome..I support that %100..and this way parents can just filter .xxx sites all together instead of the shabby parental controls they have now with a million and one loopholes in them.somebody should buy www.xxx.xxx wait a month and sell it for a million dollars. or sex.xxx

I have been saying this for years! That pron should get an .xxx and that if they show up on any other designation, they can be fined.
Nothing worse then surfing with your kid and you come across a porn site.

Awesome, now it's easier for underage people to find porn! Oh, wait, isn't it meant to prevent that?

Confusing.

I think its a great idea..

I remember the uproar when whitehouse.com was a porn site..

only bad thing is, I dont think the porn segregation will become mandatory..

I think I just coined a new term
porn segregation

I agree, also as the above poster stated it will be fairly easier for parents to block out sexually explicit content on home PC's with programs that can block whole domain sections such as XXX.

My 14 year old is going to be pissed lol

I don't know about that. When I was 14 I was able to get around filters, use proxies, and even use telnet to search through peoples files using their IP address.

Yes I did..

The people were willing participants and there was no security on the computers. My point was that I had the ability to do that at 14, so it's not unlikely that the other poster 14 year old can't get around an Internet filter.

.com will still dominate the adult industry domains, you wont see many sites using .xxx domains, just like you dont see many .tv domains or other novelty domains.

It certainly will make it easier for some fundamental/religious orientated governments to restrict pron sites. Whether this is a good or bad thing remains to be seen.

Actually a lot of the porn industry have been lobying to get this done for years.

The .TV I can understand as it was harder for people to find such products when the default is .com

As the majority of the internet is porn, having a .xxx will make it EASIER for you to get visibility and hits with users.

It's a win for the porn industry. Futhermore, this will lead to actual laws which will force porn companies to adopt the .xxx platform. I can think of at least one good reason to have such a law.

It would keep child pornography low and easily trackable if everybody operates under .xxx.

Also parental controls as stated above and user friendliness on the internet in general.

With further reading, one sees that there is nothing to force a company from using an XXX domain. The websites that serve up porn KNOW you will use filters to block the XXX domain space, so they wont be using them exclusively.

What happens when your wife wants the xxx space blocked so you don't view the porn? This can only serve to hurt the industry, so they wont be running to register all of their names. Also, registering domain names that are already prevalent wont make you huge cash. Go register playboy.xxx see if you make any money on it or if you just lose that domain to the established trademark.

This is just another of the 300+ domain extensions that you need to reserve to protect your own branding. More $$ for the machine.

This is not good news.

This is initially a voluntary thing on the part of the provider who needs to request being a .xxx site. Most of the porn sites will not move, particularily the established ones. The government will then begin to force those sites who don't move over from .com to .xxx placing the government in the business of determing what is and is not pornography, not a good move because there are many groups in this country that would classify all sorts of things pornography if they had the chance.

There will be no way to manage what is actually on all sites, hence the determinition of .xxx will create the perception that all porn will eventually be .xxx and that will be impossible to do.

The next step will be creating a tiered system where folks pay more for bandwidth when they are accessing different kinds of sites.

In 10 years you will have a whole series of domains, each with different costs.

.gov - free
.edu - $
.xxx - $$$$
.news - $$ - then we'll get into the fun business of someone deciding what is news.
.com - ?
on and on

The more granular the designations are made for the internet the easier the internet will be to regulate. If you don't think that the government will apply taxes at different levels based on the kind of internet traffic, you're kidding yourself. This is the camel's nose under the tent.

The government will implement significant internet regulation, taxing, and monitoring. They will take a bunch of different steps to get there and this is one of them.

The government will not make porn sites use .xxx, .com just stands for commercial although you can use it for whatever you want.

btw check out all the suffixes there are already - www.computerhope.com...

I hear you. The first step will be creating the domains and the next step will be forcing sites into specific domains. The third step will be allocating bandwidth based on the domain and the following step will be the taxing of domains differently.

When you tell folks that they are going to monitor their internet activity, folks object. When you tell folks that you are going to take steps to ensure that you are not subsidizing behavior you might find objectionable, folks say "cool". They say "cool" because they don't ever think that anything they do would ever be seen as objectionable.

little steps

I have met some very saavy kids. They are technologically advanced. That is my fear, my kid is gonna run circles around me and I am not going to be able to protect him.

My cousin is a kindergarten teacher, something would go wrong with the computer and a 5 y.o. will walk up and go: I can fix that. And does. And she is like:

And it is not like she is computer illiterate either.

My husband was in IT 9 years ago and changed fields. Already the industry has passed him by and we are now on the same level.
