First of all, I'm glad Izarith brought up our little coup attempt against Chavez at the beginning of the First Bush administration. We kidnapped the man and it was the popular outcry of Venzuelans that brought him back to power.

Second, he is an elected president of a sovereign country, not a dictator. No one has ever offered any evidence that held up that indicates otherwise.

Third, there is NO and I repeat that NO unbiased press on Venezuela that we can turn to for help on this. Even PBS has trashed the man day and night for years, helping them earn their Pentagon Broadcasting System stars and bars,

Fourth, you forget our erstwhile allies against Chavez are Columbia, aka Cocaine/CIA Ltd. and, and, I can't think of another country in Latin America that would side with us against Chavez.

I'm not saying he's a saint, but he has worked consistently for the poorest people of his country and the main voices of dissent are the old money aristocracy there. Obama is hardly a big fan or supporter of his and I through I'm pretty unhappy with him these days, he is not within two oceans of being any kind of socialist. The only "socialism" coming out of Washington D. C. is corporate socialism and do we really want to return to the heyday of Untied Fruit Company politics in Latin America? We seem to be doing our best at that lately in Guatemala. There is no sacred right to property; there are nearly 2000 verses in the Bible urging people to be generous to the poor, "for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven".

I suggest folks read Smedley Butler's, War is a Racket sometime. If you don't know it, it's the testimony of a former Marine Corps General who fought war after war in Latin America, Mexico and China at the beginning of the Twentieth Century and finally had enough. He would later derail a bankers plot to overthrow FDR, but that's another story. Here's just a small part of it and I'll provide a link at the bottom.

Of course, for this loss, there would be a compensating profit -- fortunes would be made. Millions and billions of dollars would be piled up. By a few. Munitions makers. Bankers. Ship builders. Manufacturers. Meat packers. Speculators. They would fare well. Yes, they are getting ready for another war. Why shouldn't they? It pays high dividends. But what does it profit the men who are killed? What does it profit their mothers and sisters, their wives and their sweethearts? What does it profit their children? What does it profit anyone except the very few to whom war means huge profits? Yes, and what does it profit the nation?

www.veteransforpeace.org...

We are at war in Iraq and Afghanistan for oil and minerals (and heroin for the CIA) and on the verge of war with Iran, again over oil if you view the issue in terms of the whole Persian Gulf. So you want war with Venezuela too? Because they nationalized an oil company? When our Gulf Coast is drowning in oil, I don't think we need to add blood as a dispersant.

Obviously Chavez has been looking for a fight or something to jump into in order to "prove" himself to the world. Especially those who hate America. He has sought financial & economic assistance from some pretty shady countrys and leaders in the last few years. My reckoning is that he does not fear Obama both because he subscribes to mainstream conspiracy theorys & the rumor mills for his logistical infomation. So in that regard he is the equivilant of a naive' teen with the power of a dictator. Do the math there.

Second is that he thinks Obama will revert to talk rather than military action because of the current attitude of a war weary US population and it's military forces spread thin now. He is simply taking advantage to gain him some leverage and assets to further his agenda. If the US does not act in my opinion and experience, that action alone could boost his willfullness to act more severe in the future. I think this should be dealtt with straight forward and with resolve.

The decision to nationalize (or take over) the non-operational U.S. rigs is a very smart move by Venezuela. Seeing how there's an out of control sea floor hemorrhaging just to the north of them, its practically a matter of national security not just for Venezuela, but all the other Gulf states as well. They probably begged Chavez to do it. Another BP-style event in the Gulf will literally doom all the countries if they aren't doomed already.

The question is: why does Venezuela buy its own oil from Helmerich & Payne? Globalization that's why. You can thank the World Bank, IMF, TLC & the Bilderbergs for that.

And why does the U.S. let any foreign interest control it's offshore oil resources? So corporations can make the most amount of profit possible. I own the land, he owns the rig, they do the drilling, someone else refines it, etc.

Look at all the cars around you. They all run on gas that costs atleast $3 a gallon. Imagine every car spitting 3 one dollar bills out on the road every gallon they use. One dollar bills would literally cover everything. The amount of money we're talking about here is considerable.

And when the SHTF, these corporations all point the finger at each other. Shame on BP. Shame on Transocean. Shame on the MMS for letting anyone loosen the standard of regulations required to avoid this exact sort of catastrophe!

All one needs to experience to figure out the priorities of these mega rich corporations is how they're handling the media, the cleaning crews, and the locals that populate near the beaches of the Spill.

We should take a hint from Venezuela and appropriate our own foreign-owned oil rigs. The risks are just too great to trust to some profit driven entity with our safety.

That goes for Monsanto & the EPA too.

Theft ? Of course. Nations do not matter anymore. Corporations do.
If - it's in my country I can do whatever I want with it. That's how I see it. Of course - "nation" is getting old, now corporations matter more.

More about Chavez, and what real criminals look like (US government) here:

Google Video Link

And I am not against US. Can you imagine that ? I have nothing against the average American. The average American is not to blame for this.

By the time this oil disaster is brought under control it is likely that between a third of a billion and three-quarters of a billion gallons of oil will have been poured into the Gulf and the Caribbean and up the east coast of America. Cuba, Haiti and every country along the basin will have oil washing up on their shores, most of the gulf and Caribbean will be dead seas, and economies across North and South America will be crashing down. Now how does that make Chavez a teenager? Granted I'm on thin ground here, because he wants oil production too, but do what do you think the geopolitical blowback on this will be? I'd say Chavez' action was a very moderate shot across the bow of a sinking ship. There is nothing outside of negotiation we can or should do about this. There is no reason why Americans should support oil billionaires to protect their investments. We will change our lifestyles, as we must, if oil prices go up and supply goes down, but there is not another drop of enthusiasm left in this country for yet another war.

We had a century long roll as kings of the world. Time to cash in a retirement plan and call it enough. Otherwise, we'll go the way of all empires. And there is no argument you can make that this is exactly what we are and have been for quite some time. By the end of the Cold War, we were a punch drunk fighter that managed to just stay on his fight while the Soviets collapsed.

The ultimate stupidity of Clinton, Bush and Obama is that they all thought or think we can keep this going another 15 rounds. We can't and we need to look at the world and realize that we didn't even WIN the Cold War, as nation after nation abandons our particular style of free trade, unrestrained, fee market capitalism. The smart ones made their compromise between socialism and capitalism and still boast free societies. The others turned toward more strong armed socialism, but none have adopted the wild west capitalism we practice for the benefit of a few thousand uber-rich.

I'd fight for liberty, if liberty means equal rights and human rights and democratic government, but I won't lock and load for American billionaires who put profit over base values. Obama's problem is that he, like every other president in a half-century is supporting government welfare for the rich and is willing see thousands of Americans and millions of non-americans die for it.

In it's founding moment, this country was embroiled in class war as Daniel Shays led his unappreciated and impoverished nation to war with Boston Banks on the eve of the Constitutional Convention. It may die that way too since that war, more than other, has left an enduring legacy on America that runs through whiskey rebellion, the railroad strikes of 1877, the Great Upheaval in the 1890s, the Homestead Strike, the Postwar strikes of 1919 and 1945, the Bonus March on Washington in 1933 and General Strikes of the mid-1930s, the steel and auto strikes of 1968 and dozen other conflicts in between. Those are where Americans fought for democracy, both political and economic and until we have both, we're only in a cease fire mode. You can't sustain a political democracy without an economic democracy and if there had been anything more than rich landowners at the convention in 1787, we might have had one. Democracy can't e sustained any other way; it will just be hijacked again and again by those can pay to win.

You TOOOOO? psychoacoustic1,

H&P LEASES the rigs to Venezuela. They are an American company drilling for the oil!!!
They don't control anything except the drilling.
The "Company Man" here is Venezuela. They did not pay their rent to H&P so they stopped working.
It as if your boss stopped paying you, would you continue to work.

Chavez is taking control of the rigs...I just hope our guys get out safely, not like in Nigeria (hostages).

Man you people don't have a clue how the oilfields work, in the states or foreign.

Like others have said on other threads: If you don't know what you are talking about, RESEARCH then post.

At least somebody understands a little of what the hell is going on.

As for the Chinese, they are building, manning and drilling with their own rigs. They pay, just like everyone else, for the drilling rights!!

Jeez, Will everybody stick by the ATS motto...DENY IGNORANCE!!!

Otherwise don't post and stfu.
Thanks,

So these oil rigs will rot too. Same as always when el commandante plunders the oil industry: Maintenance will be neglected due to lack of money, work and supply plans will be made by clueless but 120% fuhrer-loyal bureaucrats, productivity will plummet, and every animal around will die of the pollution.

You want the government to take over businesses? Which Obama has already done more than once?

Google Greece. See the results of that mentality. Greece is now a slave to the Soros crowd. Last I looked they are all in the same Party as Obama.

A country slave of banks. You are showing us that its good to nationalize with this example, and it's just that greece didn't do it.

The BP problem was an accident. The poisoned moon landscapes in the Orinoco oil belt are not. They are the product of a corrupt government controlled industry that only cares about making dollars for El Lider Maximo. No independent control instance, no coverage in the state owned media. Critics get jailed for obscure reasons or shot by "muggers". Everything is fine in Venezuela.

Nope, not an Obama supporter by any means... but I do believe in a socialist-leaning market economy. I do love the idea of amnesty for illegals, public health care and the government actively competing in the market place with the post office... something, I might add, is sanctioned by the Constitution.

Good luck with whatever new dictator you help elect in 2012.

Chavez is not sticking his finger at anyone but the owners of the rigs the were on lease to Venezuela. Chavez stopped making payments for use of the rigs.
Chavez is the thief here not the oil rigs owners who were simply waiting for payments on the lease.

The tyrant Chavez talks down the US in order to incite hatred of the US and as an excuses to steal American (business) owned (not America the country) assets.
