This list and information seems a little sensationalized and I find it hard to believe 60 countries qualify for "failed state" but some of the things going on in our world are still pretty amazing, amazingly bad in this case.

I'd heard of countries using children for soldiers but to see pictures of these 9-10 year old kids training is just heart-breaking.

Most of these countries are in Africa. Studying the politics and everything else in government in these countries. I have come to terms none of them are one in the same. Some are democratic, Islamic, even African socialist. Religion is very different in the countries. Mostly are followers of Christianity and Islam. I wish Africa and the rest of the world can have peace!

Liberia is underrated in my opinion. There's some pretty weird things that go down there.

Some of these do seem out of sorts. They made their list by looking at 12 individual statistics and adding them. Some of the tabs are Demographic pressures, human rights, external intervention, public services, and more.

Here's the top 20 or so with the full list

I was surprised to find Kenya at 13!! I've been there several times and from the locals' perspective they just kinda go on about their business, making what they can, working day by day.

What "they" consider a failed state and what you may consider a failed state, are probably two different things. I would like to know the exact criteria in which they rate these failed states. There is a million different ways to judge failure, with the same number of results.

That's it I'm moving to Oz! Love a bit of human geography in the morning gets the brain active.

The child soldiers are truly heartbreaking. I've heard that the commanders in these groups believe child soldiers to be super soldiers, even better than fully grown men. This is because they have not yet developed a fear of dying which becomes more prominent with age, and they don't question their own mortality. They can be brainwashed into believing almost anything, and they are fit and healthy as they come. It can also throw off your enemy in a fire fight seeing a kid wielding a weapon.

I also find it interesting that a lot of European states only fall into the stable region. I would have thought Belgium and Germany to have some of the best public services in relation to tax rates in the world. Perhaps this is in light of their current debt time bomb.

Scandinavia is not surprising to be in the top, but Sweden in particular has the highest tax rates in the world and also some of the highest suicide rates. Something to do with the lack of sunlight I'll bet, that's why Oz comes out on top for me!

A failed state is only failed, because someone (fat westerner expert) has declared it failed. Its divide and conquer speak. Ask the populace if theyre happy and then decide

That's it I'm moving to Australia. Australia is more stable according to this chart than Europe AND the US.

Awesome Oz!

It is amazing that with everything we have, we still have countries in this condition. It's all greed and money... I hate money. It's the root of all evil and suffering. This planet gives us plenty of food and water to survive on but a select few control who gets it and how much..Sad and sick if you ask me. Who are they to say who can eat and survive?! I hope Mother Nature kicks their butts out of her home

But if you will notice in that photograph, the children are smiling and having fun. There are well-dressed adults standing around, some applauding. This looks more like a theatrical presentation, or something akin to ROTC, with the children putting on a rehearsed performance for parents and or teachers.

We do the same thing here, only at the high school and college level.

Ummmm not so much my friend.

It doesnt take a "westerner" to see that severe hunger, suicide bombers, the treating of women and children as second and third class citizens and the training of children as killing machines makes a country "totally fail" at being a country.

Agreed.

It's all in the judges perspective. I could only imagine if they were ranking countries by their Pious standards back 100 years ago. I'd be willing to bet that about 80% of the world would of qualified as "Failed states"

I generally agree but had a different feeling about this particular source. Turns out you're right on, Foreign Policy was purchased by The Washington Post in 2008. Wiki info here.

What do they mean by using the term "failed"? So far as I can tell; most, if not all, of those on the list still exist as geopolitically recognized areas. So, failed how? Failed at attempting to pick themselves up by the bootstraps and drop the 3rd world status?

The way I see it.....if it still exists (as a nation) then it can't be "failed", as they still have a chance to turn their fortune around.
