Ok...so I caught it finally. Hopefully this one stays, but two other times this week I saw 3.0's on her, and when I came back later they were not listed.

The reason I point this out is simply to show how closely she is being watched.

Here is the bugger:

Could an eruption be possible before the year is out?

Well Katla has been having atleast one quake around 3 richter each week now. Nothing indicating at the moment that it is increasing.

Took this text from the main page of Vedur.is

An earthquake measuring at. 17:55 and got a size 3.8 automatic processing was found by reviewing the data will only be 1.2 in size.

They have lowerd almost every quake that has been mesured over the 3 richter for the last 2 months. Kind of strange how the quakes are never larger then the first recorded mesures but always lower.

See, I knew I was not crazy. I watch it daily and see this happens at least once a week, sometimes more.

I posted just a bit ago that I saw it happen.

Thank you

Pretty sure i have not linked this page before, this is the Institue of earth sciences. It has alot of technical data about volcano´s here in Iceland , and they have a special page about Katla also which shows how many quakes and such , and they have pictures from the crater..

They went ahead and lowerd the quake from monday evening from a 3,2 to a 2,8 richter,, they really don´t like having stars on the map. Not a single quake of all the 3+ quakes each week now stayes above 3 richter,,

How crappy are the instruments if the most watched area that has loads of stations nearby, that not a single quake over 3 richter holds up. Yet we get quakes in vatnajökull and those numbers hold up yet that´s the worst watched area. Well atleast for nearby sil stations and the other ,, can´t recall at the moment what it´s called.

I can believe that one or two quakes get downgraded like that , but not dozens of quakes over a 8 week period.

Something Smells Fishy

They even go ahead and say on the weekly overview that the largest quake from last week was 3,5 and then they say some were under 3, but then if we look at the numbers for that quake , we get this instead

20111108 095041.992 63.60371 -19.13850 0.136 2.90 3.38

this says the quake was 2,9 richter. so they were only 0,6 richter off conveniently just putting the quake under the mark needed for them to put a star on the map where the quake was.

Another huge swarm of quakes just started where they have been drilling , over 100 quakes in the last 3 hours.
Most of them ranging around 1 richter, and around 5km deep , but there is one quake that the page says originated 33,7km deep and it´s 0,8 richter.

It seems like they are pretty reguarly removing quakes now. I think they are worried about something, and I think they are even more worried about the effects on the economy, so they are trying to keep any possible, or potential rumors down.

Drilling and fracking on top of magma cant be good.

I did find this article which is interesting (slow link for some reason):

i' would like to approach the Iceland Volcano's in the larger context... instead of looking at the independent treesand not seeing the forest

sure the whole mid-Atlantic ridge is suddenly very active.
it seems a case of sneaking up on us right before our eyes.

during Earth history, particulary at the Permian-Triassic Boundary (P-T)
there were the massive Siberian Traps vulcanism, which i think is getting repeated Now...
all along the mid-Atlantic Ridge, and 2 points of focus: Iceland & Canary Islands; or west of Gibralter/Spain

www.google.com...

palaeo.gly.bris.ac.uk...

The Siberian Traps were the largest volcanic eruption in Earth history and they occured right at the same time as the largest extinction event in Earth history.

The Siberian Traps are a large igneous province were a result of a mantle plume. A mantle plume is a giant pulse of heat that rises towards the surface from the core/mantle boundary. Plumes are easily indentified but not well understood and they are believed to be part of a cooling mechanism for the core. Whatever their cause a large amount of anomalously hot material rises to the surface and ponds below the earths crust in a head which can be 1000's of km wide and 100's of km deep....

i suggest there are new & huge mantle plumes rising all along 'old' magma spots...being some kind of reaction caused by the inner & outer Earth core being extremely active with the lower & upper Mantle... for some reason starting a decade or so ago.

perhaps the Earth is in the process of Pole Reversal which is just a side effect of the inner-outer Core rotations
getting magnetically twisted...and that process causes gigantic Mantle Plumes to reach the Crust layer of the Earth...
which we witness as Volcano's, out-gassing, Earth sea-bed expansion, etc etc...
or perhaps a repeat of the Siberian Traps massive vulcanism which created some 2 million square miles of new surface on the Planet

Thought i would keep this thread afloat!

Activity still ongoing in and around Katla.

en.vedur.is...

Noticed Jon Frimann tweeted recently that he expressed a little frustration about peoples over reaction to the activity in Katla, especially at some reports of an imminent eruption.

Personally, i am woefully uneducated in this field, so i'll monitor his blog and reaction to ongoing events.

Well the last couple of months the whole country has been inactive except Katla and the Ridge area where the drilling has been. I haven´t had the urge to post every quake that has happent in katla as the activity there has been pretty much the same. Nothing indicating at the moment that there is a eruption about to happen.

Regarding the siberian traps and the idea that, that event would be happening again i can not comment on it as i don´t know the full extent of what you are referring to, but i will look into it. But the idea does interest me a bit seing as we have this huge mantle plume under Vatnajökull.

Nothing new to report from iceland at the moment , except grímsvötn seem to be waking up again a little www.vedur.is...

Unless anything happens in the next few days,,

I WISH YOU ALL A MERRY XMAS.

We had a quake last night 5km west of Godabungu near katla it was 3,6 richters. And as for all quakes we have had in katla over 3 richter, it was marked down to a 0,5 richter quake.

I have no doubt in my mind that this is being done intentionally because there is no way that the equipment there is failing everytime a quake is around 3 richter or more that this could possibly be equipment fault that they have to downgrade each and everyone of them.

We might be seing some action from katla now, a small tremor plot started up last night with about 24 small quakes the largest one being 2,1 richter, then one happend this morning and it´s measured at 2,9 richter.
Most of the quakes including the 2 larger ones are happening at the depth of -0.1km so it´s right at the top. This might be ice cracking up though. We had around the same activity last year with really shallow quakes like these and nothing happent then. So here´s hoping for Ice cracking up.
