Hydro said a main gas line was ruptured by a concrete construction crew doing work on a road in the area.
Stopping the flow of the gas was complicated, because it was a main gas line — a 22-centimetre wide pipe — that was ruptured, according to Hydro spokesman Glenn Schneider.
"With a larger main like this, you have a lot of gas blowing which makes it all the more dangerous in case there's any points of ignition in the area — it's not just as simple as clamping it off.
