Hydro said a main gas line was ruptured by a concrete construction crew doing work on a road in the area.

Stopping the flow of the gas was complicated, because it was a main gas line — a 22-centimetre wide pipe — that was ruptured, according to Hydro spokesman Glenn Schneider.

"With a larger main like this, you have a lot of gas blowing which makes it all the more dangerous in case there's any points of ignition in the area — it's not just as simple as clamping it off.

Good thing no one was smoking. Clearly they didn't get all the needed information on where these things were. Call before digging.

Gas really affects the integrity of cement, pavement, and such. What a mess.
