His "tell" was the excess rambling right at the end... Fact: We are not China. The internet is a tier level system. If it's all going to get dropped, a kill-switch would serve absolutely no purpose. Hackers mess around all the time. It's a cat and mouse game. Instead of jerking around in the Senate, how about expanding encryption (i.e. quantum photon) and purging these crap Chinese routers loaded with Conflicker C. That last part is just a hunch I have. You know, like their dry walling material.

Can someone explain to me how these guys still manage to hold seats?

Hey Joe, we have things in this country called "rights," specifically the right to freedom of speech... you... nor any other Senator has the "right" to take that away from us.

Go ahead and tamper with the freedom of the Internet.

See what happens.

I hate how these people speak as if war is always near. As if we need to stay prepared for the eventuality of war, and if not war then terrorism abroad, and if not terrorism abroad then homegrown terrorism. It never ends, this cycle of self-perpetuating fear. The very idea of shutting down the internet, for whatever reason, doesn't make much sense. How much business is actually done on the internet, and what could its cessation cost the United States?

Here is the bill if anyone wants to review it:

S.3480 - Protecting Cyberspace as a National Asset Act of 2010

I don't think he fully understands what he's saying, or at least what the consequences of what he's proposing would be.

There are people out there who make Anonymous look like script-kiddies.

They don't make near as much noise, but if the government tries something like this, they will make their presence known and it won't be pretty.

he tries to ease and minimize by saying stuff like "we wouldn't do it every day" and stuff like that...that statement isn't built into the bill....aka its a politician deflecting you away from the bill by saying what you want to hear in hopes you wont see the bill itself.

Another bothersome thing....why the president? I would feel WAY more confident in anything like this (although not support it) if the power was given to a specific and relevant power...not the president...that gives the president (which most likely knows nothing of internet security or anything in the long run) the ability to say who can do what with his power....he uses advisers. So essentially in a roundabout way they are taking a bill that is already shady and BS and making it more so shady and BS by giving it to an ignorant power that can be persuaded by people in turn rendering the president (and source of power of the bill) a mere puppet in this thing...so the power doesn't go to the president....the power is more of a free flowing and up for anyone to grab type thing...

just my thoughts on what I see

Great. Now that the redistribution of wealth is steadily underway I guess the next thing on the "to-do" list is to start making sure the poor and disenfranchised won't have a voice either.

Closing down the net would have no real world purpose, as the gov wants us busy, and like tv the net keeps us busy.

So he is talking bull, there is no kill switch for the net, the gov need the net.

Well what would you exspect the zionists to do when the MSM they control has become such a joke other than to go after the internet.

The DCMA is just part of the slow drip, drip and this is all about censorship of the internet with Google being at the front bacuse they claim sites they don't like may harm your computer because the sites happens to say the wrong things.

Realy americans you need to deal with the cancer that is destroying your country.

Many chinese make a good living online same as many there in the u.s . Ahh well keep listening to your idiot leaders as seems most there dont care to hear that theyre being lied to by their beloved leaders..

Au Contraire, Mon Frère... Our government could suspend/ cease connectivity by demanding ISP's comply. They could eventually tag most everything. Try getting to a proxy with no routing whatsoever. I use both at&t and verizon... I'd see broadband and hot spots go bye-bye.

I am not saying they cannot close it down in theory, it would serve no purpose, as the gov wants us busy and doing something other than wondering what they are doing.

I do not see them closing the net down, they will just find ways round things.

Like how they probably have mobs of people flooding boards like this, to try and stop any truths coming out. Also getting people banned, by hacking there accounts.

The gov can do so many things, but although they could turn of the net, i doubt they will.

But they don't spy on our internet traffic and phone calls either... Right? Puts a lot of doubt out there, if you ask people I know.

talk about job k illers!!

I think too many of us have gotten too used to having the internet around!
far too many are using it to earn their income, or expand on it!!
and well, can you imagine the chaos that would occur when all those people who are paying thier bills online all of a sudden don't have the internet to connect to to pay them?? I think my husband would be lost!! wouldn't have any idea who wants what sent where. heck alot of those companies have done away with the paper statement, or have given us the option to with a nice bribe if we do..

ah, maybe they are just trying to condition us for when that one good solar flare comes along and wipes all the electronics into uselessness....
a few trial runs probably would be usefull.....

got a feeling it might be a little harder for them to shut down the net than they think. alot of us would be going back to the old way, it's easier now than it was to have your own server, and well, there is always the old dial up connections to you local bbs....who connect to this other local bbs, and on and on....
a little more of a hassle, but well...it worked then it would work now.
