Could be a person too. I suppose that's as credible as a structure on the moon.. not that's it's not credible.. uh, well you know what I mean. Anyway, when I first saw it, it looked like a person just standing there.

Sorry, but Not the 1st thing I thought when I saw it 1st. There is no atmosphere on the Moonand this causes very distant objects to appear clearer and closer to the human eye. What appears as nearby hills in some photographs, are actually mountains several kilometers high and some 10-20 kilometers away. The moon is 2000 miles across and this structure is on the horizon many miles away. So, with that said how tall is this thing? 500 ft? More?

Hrmm.

That is a lunar water tower.

Awesome find S&F
how have i not heard of this before? I mean crap its been almost 60 years?

anyways, i plucked this little gem off the internet to help you guys in your quest-

For any airless, spherical world of radius R, an observer at altitude h

explain to me how that could be a manmade structure in the distance, when we had been to the moon.....................how many times?

Anybody know how to get this thread moved to the "Space Exploration" area? I didnt see that a lot of moon stuff was there.

no. if you re-read what i posted it said the average distance you can see to the horizon on the moon is 8.3 km. well under 12 miles. more around 5.1 miles.

if the object is that far away then it could be fairly large!

Oops, your right. Still though...

how tall you think it might be based on 6 miles away?

Based on 6 miles.......

I'd say 200ft-400ft.

I can't explain. I am merely suggesting possibilities based on moon theories.
Some think we have been there and some say we haven't. Some even say
we've been there prior to the 60's. Hell, some say we've been to Mars.
Just catering to all the possibilities thrown around here on ATS.

Plus I told you which 2 I was leaning towards and man made structures
wasn't one I subscribe to.

The comments on the effect of little or no atmosphere are good... it does strange things to the perspectives in both the astronaut's eyes and the photography, leading to a lot of misinterpretation, especially noticeable within the moon hoax tribal rantings. I believe this thing is really quite massive.

Talk about hiding things in plain sight! Ha!

Search here for moon atmosphere, by the way, there's good stuff available.

Personally I think it looks a heck of a lot like Hoagland's famous Shard. Really like it! If I recall that was far away from 11, though... hey, maybe there are a lot of them!

If I wasnt visiting the rents, Id be online with my windows comp and would make a sweet pic with photoshop.

To determine how tall the structure is*, you would have to make a triangle.

side A = the avg dist to horizon = 5.1 miles
side B = the height of the "tower" (unknown)
side C = the distance from the observer to the TOP of the tower. (unkown)

we could assume side A and B connect at a relatively 90 degree angle.

since we dont have enough info im going to guesstimate.
if angle A*C = 30 degrees then the tower is 2.9 miles high
If angle A*C = 15 degrees then the tower is 1.37 miles high

I cant see the angle being less than 15 degrees, so something is certainly fishy!

Are you serious? Thats way taller than I thought. And that about rules out choice #whatever it was the "natural formation theory"

OT - very good catch.

This has just now been noticed? After how long?

Very compelling!

Way to be!

Would this be viewable using a larger dobsonian scope, if viewed at the terminator?

Very strange and cool. Does look like a water tower, though.

I wonder if its in any pictures that were taken on that mission.

I'm also surprised this hasn't been seen already and discussed, or has it..

First I like the suspense with this thread! S&F

Not matter what it turns out to be good eye.

Now does anyone know the flight??

AS??? What mission is other words?

This is the first thing that needs answered.

Next after identifying the mission, then the Lunar surface equipment needs to be ruled out as the culprit.

The anomaly has the distinct look of the surface camera they place at the beginning of the EVA'S for MCC to watch in on their actions on the lunar surface stay.

Once this has been done and the anomaly still remains an anomaly:

Look for Hires imagery of the landing site and see if this shows on Lunar Orbiter Data, Hasselblad Imagery etc etc.

I like a good Lunar Mission Mystery.

Oddly enough, this bears a similar shape to a tower seen on Iapetus, a moon of Saturn:

Odd indeed...
