The belief in God has nothing to do with what he created. It rains on believers as well as non believers.

Well I think this is a good post!
All the country's mentioned, as far as I know, don't mix religion with education very much.
So, what I gained from this is..
The more educated a country is, the more the population is in a possition to weigh up the facts against religion and make an adult opinion on the whole subject.
Therefore, education, science etc allows the population to advance and evolve away from outdated modes of thinking that are detremental to them as individuals and as a nation.
As far as I know, most organised religions like to keep the status quo, which in most cases is somewhere back in the bronze age, they don't like progress or modern aducation as it is a threat to their power.
The country's shown in the OP are country's where they have broken from the outdated shackels of oppressive religions and evolved mentally.
That's my take on it anyway

That could be about right about the Dutch.

A third of the country keeps voting for a religious party.
Well... this year was different.

It tells me that people live long in those countries and that America should start blowing more bubbles and smoke, too!

Oh, it also tells me that ATS members should take more pictures of their immediate surroundings instead of sitting in front of the computer all day and night, trolling and posting highly biased, yet subjective opinions.

Thank you.

This thread roughly mirrors this thread also on ATS

Indeed, higher religiosity seems associated with more negative sociological issues.

Too bad people like Robertson, Coulter, O'Reilly, etc. fail to actually research this fact before issuing verbally masturbatory statements about their religion.

The text on the top image talked about societies that believe in god and each box just stated what percent of people think religion is important. You dont have to think religion is important to believe in god or be spiritual. I dont have a problem with atheism, I was one for a while(still am one depending on if you agree with my definition of god) but I dont really think those stats proved anything one way or another when it comes to belief in god like the top text was referring to, it does say something about organized religion though. Jus sayin...

No major economic hardships here in Sweden.. from my view point the US seems to be crumbling in every aspect of society though.. not all European countries are hurting, sounds like propaganda to me.

Don't throw rocks in glass houses.

Bu-but.. we're all communist socialists, we don't work we only steal from our fellow neighbours.. or... we've got solidarity built into our mentality stemming from our historic need to help each other and the community out to survive the harsh winters.

"Lagom" is a concept americans could benefit from adopting, especially in these times.

Another statistics about the same countries:
Suicide Rate Per 100k as of 2008 and Total Population
10. New Zealand Male 23.6 Female 5.8 Total Population 4,374,900
9. Netherlands Male 13.1 Female 6.5 Total Population 16,618,650
8. Finland Male 38.7 Female 10.7 Total Population 5,362,500
7. Australia Male 19.0 Female 5.1 Total Population 22,391,581
6. Japan Male 24.3 Female 11.5 Total Population 127,360,000
5. UK Male 11.0 Female 3.2 Total Population 62,041,708
4. France Male 30.4 Female 10.8 Total Population 65,447,374
3. Norway Male 19.1 Female 6.2 Total Population 4,887,600
2. Denmark Male 24.3 Female 9.8 Total Population 5,540,241
1. Sweden Male 20.0 Female 8.5 Total Population 9,359,742
Average rate of group M 22.35 F 7.81 Total Pop of Group 323,384,296
If all is warm and fuzzy without a god, suicide rates would be too small to calculate.

compare to:

United States Male 19.3 Female 4.4 Total Population 309,550,000
Canada Male 21.5 Female 5.4 Total Population 34,146,000

HDI and Life Exp
United States HDI: 13th Life Exp 79.1
Canada HDI: 4th Life Exp 80.6
Majority of both populations are religious in some way..Christian mostly.

I'd also like to point out that the UK has aprox 43.5 MILLION Christians. The data collected by the pic in OP is misleading and probably skewed. No offense to the OP.

Edit to add sources, sorry:
Human Development Reports
and Wiki for the rest.

Great thread S+F

I don't see why it is so hard for the people who responded to understand the point is not about how beautiful the country is but only about the indexes.

This is something I already know. You could have a country where 90% of the population is Christian but does not practice or consider religion important, they can still believe in god(s). The point is that it does not affect their lives as it would a community where religion is important.

I believe that Socialism, when practiced in its' purest form(Scandinavian) is the kindest, most prosperous and most enlightened ideology in the world. It allows people to come together as a community, which allows that community to believe in other people for help and not in prayer. It makes people take action if they want something done.

I was trying to introduce how many believe that religion should be involve in government issues.

Religion has absolutely NO business being involved in government issues. Or education. It just gets in the way. Especially in a melting pot type of country with a thousand different religions. :shk:

Beautiful pictures, by the way..

Nothing other than simplistic generalities can be made 1000 ways given a just about any data point.

Drawing an inference based on something that can not be emperically determined, such as "how important" something is a fool's errand.

I like how it starts with "Religious extremists say"

From the look of it the article should prolly include something about the agenda of Atheist extremists....seems only fair...and is it not the same thing?

The problem with universal atheism is no different then what atheists claim is the problem with religion. It breeds disagreement and that can lead to many things....please explain how atheism trumps this...and please explain how you think that atheism (a religion of its own) would be able to convince everyone it is best WITHOUT violence....isn't thats what is happening now? Islam extremists attack non Islamic people and all because they don't believe...other religions do it plenty...

You could make a post like this of EVERY religion....atheism is no different....if everyone agreed on one religion it wouldn't matter what religion it is....

Also...ending with "No country has ever suffered because its people became reasonable" is about the worst way to convince someone of what point you are trying to make...

"Hey! your really stupid for what you believe! why don't you come over here and see what I have to say!?!?"

nice tactic -.-

Where does it say thats the suicide rates are connected to a lack of religion?

I see societies that speak to me. If the the likes of Alex Jones gained power, they would put people like me-a Nordic pagan-in prison or concentration camps.
