Clinton says Ariz. to be sued over immigration law, but Justice Dept. won

www.washingtonpost.com

The Obama administration has decided to sue Arizona over the state's controversial immigration law, according to Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. The Justice Department declined Thursday to confirm such a plan.

In a June 8 interview with an Ecuadorean television station, Clinton said the department, under President Obama's direction, "will be bringing a lawsuit" over the measure. A video of the interview was distributed Thursday by the American Civil Liberties Union, which urged the administration to go to court.

I agree with the federal government suing Arizona as I feel this law is rooted in racism and racial profiling.

On the other hand Im for state rights, so Arizona should sue the federal government for not enforcing current laws, but then Arizona would have to prove damage. This is easier said than done..

I've said it before and I'll go ahead and say it again, be it falling on deaf ears or not.

The ONLY reason there is so much focus on illegal mexicans is because they are the dominant group of illegal immigrants here in America.

If we had a heavy influx of illegal Canadian immigrants, you bet your sweet behind that the focus would be on Canadians.

I could see the bill being construed as racist if taken out of context, as I have witnessed numerous times, but the fact of the matter is, it's not racist, it's simply addressing the largest demographic of illegal immigrants in the United States.

You're kidding, right? You still actually hold those views, despite having access to all of the information to the contrary here at ATS? Do you refuse to open your eyes because you're afraid of seeing the damage being caused to this country by illegal immigration, or is somebody paying you to close our eyes so that we won't see?

The Federal Government has no right to force Arizona not to enforce the laws. This law is not rooted in racism, its rooted in the desire to enforce the SAME LAWS that the Federal Government already has created and now refuses to enforce themselves.

The Federal Government is out of line. Way out of line. They refuse to protect the border. They refuse to protect the citizens of THIS country whose lives are being ruined by citizens of ANOTHER country. They refuse to do anything right. Arizona's government passes a law giving themselves the power to offer this protection, and you're SIDING WITH THE PEOPLE WHO WANT TO STRIP THAT PROTECTION AWAY.

Whether you're doing it out of ignorance or for your own personal benefit, you are betraying Americans. You are siding with actions that will condemn thousands to kidnapping, murders, drug crimes, and much worse. The situation along the border is at a point where Mexico's civil war is spilling over into our country, and your solution is to STOP the only state that is willing to do anything about it. Shame on you for treason. Shame on you!

I just have to ask one question: What's your solution? Disband the United States and just give it all to Mexico?

Then you need to read the law, it mirrors the federal law that they would not enforce here or any where else in our nation.
No racism at all, if you are stopped in a traffic violation and you have the proper documents to be operating and vehicle in the state of Arizona, what's the problem. None.
Did you jump out of the car and run? Did you refuse to make an attempt to speak English? Are You Just Being Stupid Out Of Season and flip of the cop? All of this has been done and more. It really isn't hard to detect an illegal, you don't have to profile.

Hell, Little do most people know, The LEO's of Arizona, especially the Phoenix P.D. with out a law suite filed for profiling.

Okay I'm sorry but are you insinuating that if you can't speak English you're an illegal?

Because if you are, I'm going to have to ask you another question, being; were you born with an extra chromosome by any chance? Just wondering.

On topic, I don't really care either way with this. I support Arizona passing the law but I don't support the specific law itself. And the reason has nothing to do with the law itself. But Arizona needed to pass it. It was between a rock and a hard place.

It's questionable whether or not this law suit will work out for the feds in the end. They do have constitutional grounds to argue on but to be fair, Arizona has grounds to argue that the constitutional grounds they argue don't mean jack# considering they don't give a damn about the constitution to begin with.

Absolutely not, give it back to Native Americans of witch Im one, and so are these Mexican illegals yall keep blabbering about....We were here first we should be able to move around this continent if we wish. Or at least get the same option your ancestors got...

When your family arrived here were they forced to pay $1100 for a green card and put on a 7 year waiting list??

If your neighbors knocked on your door you would let them in wouldn't you?

The federal government makes these people illegal so the corporations can take advantage of them, this has been going on against Native Americans since Columbus showed up.....

Nice try, but you forget that Mexico too was once conquered by another nation and much of its indigenous population wiped out. In our case, it was the British. In their case, it was the Spanish.

Either way, the United States now exists whether you like it or not. Do you honestly think that the people who were in each different area when Europe arrived were the first? Do you think that there were no wars, no forcefully taken land before the WHITE EVIL PEOPLE showed up?

Hey, I know. Let's give the WHOLE WORLD back to the dinosaurs, right?

At the very least, every legal I know ( I know alot, I mean alot )
are trying very hard to learn our language and have before immigrating to our Country.
I did not say, I'm sorry but are you insinuating that if you can't speak English you're an illegal? End Quote.
I said if you didn't at least make an attempt to speak English. "Did you refuse to make an attempt to speak English?" End Quote.
My wife studied for 5 years before prior to her coming to America and after she was here, she continued to go to school, the same with her sister who married a friend of mine that worked closing with me in China years ago.
So, I'm saying and you just misunderstood or didn't read it through, The legals I know, even in our Country a short time, try very hard to be heard and that is trying to speak English.

As I've said elsewhere, anyone who uses the issue of race to further his personal or political agenda is a racist. That especially includes La Raza and the activists who are trying to turn a border security issue into a race war. Which it isn't.

The Arizona illegal alien law is the local answer to the Federal Gubbmint's UTTER FAILURE to secure our southern border for the last century.

That's documented FACT. The Feds do a piss-poor job of securing our national border. Let them bring that into court. When the facts start to fly, the Federal Gubbmint gonna lose the case.

Let's just tell the truth here. If the Feds think they can march into court and beat Arizona's ass with a bunch of socialist "reform" propaganda, platitudes and political pablum, let 'em come. Get your ass down there, Hillary. And I want CAMERAS IN THAT COURTROOM, okay... I want to watch the state of Arizona (God Bless You) demonstrate, point-by-point, that they are doing a better job policing the border than the Federal Gubbmint.

I'm all behind Arizona on this one.

I actually believe the federal government likes the division and tension this creates, you have radical liberals who are not competent enough to figure out that the illegals are draining our country and not contributing; and you have the people that understand, but they are all racist.

They are illegal and they have no rights as an American, call me racist even though I am not, I don't care if it offends anyone.

I support Arizona, I am sick of illegals being above the law. We are accountable for our petty crimes, they are released.

This is inevitable anyway. Think about how the PTB work. They use issues we are focused on to expand their power. I bet anything, AZ loses, but the courts tell the Federal Government to act on their own laws. In this way, states rights become limited and the Federal government rights are expanded by means of a case decision.

When my family arrived here, they were born in American hospitals to American citizens. When they became adults, they started paying taxes and have since paid significantly more money via taxes than anybody ever spent on a Green Card, a VISA, or on obtaining a citizenship. Do illegals pay taxes? Do they pay anything? Or do they just take? Oh, I think you know the answer.

If your neighbors knocked on your door you would let them in wouldn't you?

If they knocked, I'd let them in. If they broke in illegally, I'd shoot them dead in their tracks and send their family the clean-up bill.

The federal government makes these people illegal so the corporations can take advantage of them, this has been going on against Native Americans since Columbus showed up.....

Nobody wants corporations to take advantage of anybody, and nobody wants Native Americans to be harmed (Not that this law hurts Native Americans in any way shape or form,) but allowing the terrible situation along the border to continue to escalate into more violence and open warfare between gangs and law enforcement will only give the corporations more control and more power. And FYI, the Federal Government didn't "make these people illegal." They became illegal by their own choices when they broke the law to get here.

I so long for the day this country gets Sioux-ed!!!

Aha, so you decry a law for being "racist" and now it seems that you want your race to take the country away from all others. Pot, meet kettle.

YES!
My family waited and had to be interviewed at the American Consulate in Guongou China and yes, we paid quit a bit more than that actually.
I was an American Citizen assigned to China working for our Government.

Then again after arrival in American the Visa process started again, for the 10 year green card and then citizenship.
Money and waiting, don't talk to me and many of my friends about things we have been through gladly, the interviews, the Biometrics, more interviews and money.
Of course you'll say, will Communist China of course more interviews and a longer waiting time.
Not really true, yes, my wife worked for the Communist Chinese Government and yes she was a card carrying Communist and Yes, it was our jobs that brought us together. But the interviews had nothing to do with her job or mine. As a matter of fact, the interviewer was not privy to our security clearances or job titles.
She and my daughter were treated like any other Chinese Citizen applying for a visa to America.

And this, "give it back to Native Americans of witch Im one, and so are these Mexican illegals yall keep blabbering about....We were here first we should be able to move around this continent if we wish. Or at least get the same option your ancestors got... " End Quote
This is B.S. I'm half Sioux on my fathers side and half German on my mothers side.
I don't put claim to this land as a person of Indian decent. And I know damn well the Mexicans don't own nothing in America, they lost it or sold it. Tough Sh$t for them, No Claims.

To each there own, but if the illegals were blue eyed and white skin this would not be a issue, oh and they probably would not be illegals. In 1914 Texas outlawed marijuana to keep the Mexicans out, it was a complete racist based law. Oh it is interesting that Canadians can come right up to the border and be given a work permit but Mexicans can't!

Thanks to NAFTA, Canadians get most work permits right at the border. With a carefully prepared application, INS grants the L-1, TN or B-1 I-94 permits on the spot. This eliminates time-consuming "mail and wait" procedures.

The PeaceBridge

You Doc may not support this issue based on race, but truthfully its so much easier to be a racist and I feel the GOP and the Right Conservative movement is racist at its core, they are anti Illegal immigration [Mexican] anti Gay and this issue is just a way to divide us further...

So why do we just let Canadians in but not Mexicans....I feel if you show up at the border and pass a back ground check you should be let in and be protected by labor/wage laws.

Now I have admitted the federal government does not enforce its own laws, and I have already stated if Arizona can prove damages it should sue!! However this new Arizona law seems to be racial profiling to me.....

And I do think that the feds not only will march into court, I think they will win based on these laws being racist and unconstitutional in nature....

If Im a messed up person for thinking this then so be it....

The law has nothing to do with racism, or racial profiling. Have you read it ? If you've read it and see anything in there that condones racial profiling, please show me.

You must not be aware of how the Mexicans came to be in the first place. As far as their right to be here, they lost a war and sold their land and any rights to it long ago, end of story.

They are starting to take the work permits away from the Canadians. My neighbor (school teacher) told me yesterday that one of her fellow teachers has to go back to Canada because they won't renew her work visa. She has been teaching here for seven years, and is a fantastic teacher. She hired a lawyer and did everything she could do to try and stay here, but nothing worked. They refused to renew her visa because there are so many Americans out of work, and they are starting to refuse to renew a lot of work visas.

We can't just allow everyone that wants to come here to do it, we can only sustain so many people. We can't employ the people we have here now, something's gotta give. You come here legally, fine, You come here illegally, no matter what your skin color you got to go.

The point is they [Canadians] still can come upto the border and receive a permit but Mexicans can't.......These permits can only be renewed a limited number of times this is the issue your friend is facing....

SO Why can't Mexicans do this????????????????????????
