this just shows you how ignorant people really can be

nothing more to add

off course he is molesting ... if the girls have any problem later, they should go to a gynecologist ...

PAPER he published www.thestranger.com...

Patients older than 5 years were evaluated for clitoral sensory testing and vibratory sensory testing.

The condition he seems to be addressing is called Congenital adrenal hyperplasia. And if the condition is as bad as the picture accompanying this Wikipedia article, I can understand its necessity.

The issue was a way to surgically correct the condition without rendering the sufferer insensitive to stimulation, thereby avoiding circumcising them. The idea was to save the nerve endings while removing the excess tissue.

I don't know how prevalent this mutation is. I would assume this doctor is some kind of specialist in his field. This is sad. But I am inclined to think this may not be as horrific as those who infer pedophilia from the description seem to be inclined to believe.

en.wikipedia.org...

I suppose each will have to draw their own conclusions.

Edit to add: This condition is real, and it manifests itself in unfortunate ways for those who are untreated. It is related to genetics and blood-chemistry, and genital ambiguity is one of the lesser afflictions that accompany it. If your child had deformed genitalia, it would be up to you to trust a doctor to do something about it. Apparently these people, who attend the child during the procedure, are confident that it is not a degenerate person playing with their child's genitalia. I think some of us need to get our minds out of the gutter...

You're absolutely right that Dr. Poppas was working on congenital adrenal hyperplasia. Note that the first sentence of his report under "purpose" reads as follows: "Enlargement of the clitoris is often a prominent manifestation of virilizing congenital adrenal hyperplasia and other disorders of sexual development." (italics mine) That wording is so vague that many patients with other "conditions" unrelated to congenital adrenal hyperplasia could've participated in his program. As HIPPA laws are so strict, it would be impossible to contact the patients under his care to verify what they were being treated for (even moreso given the fact his patients were minors).

My mind isn't anywhere near the gutter as I'm not the one using sexual toys on minors under the guise of medical treatment.

hey,

first post, but I had to reply. genital ambiguity in a newborn or small child is devastating to parents. the child is not able to choose, and society expects girls to look one way and boys another at least they are trying to preserve functional sensation as opposed to mutilation. read the absteact before you judge

Reproducing is serious business that most people take very lightly. Any time a person produces offspring there is always chance of all sorts of unexpected mutations (if not outright death of the baby or mother). Making babies is a huge gamble and it seems silly for a parent to alter their child's genitals because society thinks men/women should look a certain way. Have you seen a child with down's syndrome before? They don't exactly fit society's standards as to how a person should look, but their parents aren't forcing them to have plastic surgery to adapt to some crazy stereotype.

Edited for typos.

th point of my post was to read the article before judgement is made. I do not know which choice i would make, but thankfully I don't have to. The hardest in life is not to judge another's behavior because you don't understand or agree with it. I fail at this frequently. The thread for this was very sensationalized so I felt a need to respond.

Yea.

Crap.

No scientific research there, as the same could be applied by means of self tests as well as enumerable methods not needing mutilation.

He's a retard, shortly put.

Naturally I read the article and Dr. Dix's report before posting. How is this thread sensationalized? The fact of the matter is a doctor at Cornell is removing parts of the clitorises of underage girls and following up by testing their "sensation" with vibrators.

The condition....

You do understand that this condition can be so bad, that it looks like an actual penis ? It is the condition most "hermaphrodites" have. It gives the perception you are both sexes.

Having said that, with modern day sex operation methods, it can now be fixed later on in life. It used to be too dangerous when an adult. Just like circumcision.

The vibrator thing....

Only logical way of testing sensitivity without "rubbing" . Maybe warm or cold water could also give an indication and not be invasive.

But....

If this was done for "cultural reasons" someone should go to jail.

All this fuss about female circumcision and yet not a whisper of male circumcision.

I believe any cutting on a child's genitals should be considered child abuse. Both male & female circumcision should be OUTLAWED.

What this 'Doctor' is doing is wrong, and dare I say it ... child molestation. Sexually stimulating a young girls clitoris and asking what she feels? This is a very gray area.

Medically speaking, I can understand the reasoning behind it. I still find myself having issues with this whole thing.

Disclosure: I was circumcised. 'Religious' reasons, according to my parents.

Yup, i've seen photographs of adult hermaphrodites that hadn't been surgically altered. That condition is another risk one takes when rolling the genetic dice.

As I mentioned above, I am not a proponent of circumcision by any means. I think it is an outdated, unnecessary and barbaric procedure. I often wonder how many males would voluntarily be circumcised if they were actually given an option.

The report mentions testing the sensitivity with fingernails, cotton swabs, in addition to "vibratory devices". Those devices were also used in other areas that weren't even operated on (such as the inner thigh).

Please see my posts both above and after yours that addresses the circumcision issue. I completely agree with you.

Would you have chosen to be circumcised had you actually been given the option?

Edited for not being able to type properly today!

Maxmars has the correct response here.

I cant see how if the parents are accompanying the doctor and hes walking everyone in the room through the procedurce its pedophilia. Someone has to do these types of jobs and indeed he is in a sort of specialist field. This is only to benefit the patient for later on in life.

Right, it’s definitely not inappropriate at all since a nice man in lab coat at brand name school walked the parents through the procedure and allowed them to view the “treatment”.
