The speech contained nothing of substance except a primer for Cap and Trade meaning more Taxes. It's like Lindsey Williams said, "expect gasoline to go up to $6 to $8 a gallon in the near future". Obama never wanted that Spill cleaned up in the first place, he wanted this disaster for his own agenda.

its all fair enough saying your going to seize the assets of Bp , but what about the millions of people employed across the world by BP who had ntohing to do with this disaster perpetrated by their CEO's or the individuals alone who stood to benefit from this crime against the planet,
think about the employees you cant just close a company what about their jobs and their livlehoods and their families !

If you want BP to pay for it then make the company pay not the employees and their families.

Fair enough those involved should face harsh punishment and even jail sentences for a long time , or they should be out there right now knee deep in oil and death cleaning it up until they die from the toxins !

Obama should pass new laws that outright ban offshore drilling and deep sea drilling and enforce laws on the use of renewable energies america needs to lead the way in alternative energy sources , and this is the time to do it !

It didn't contain anything new that hasn't been said or we've already heard.

He needs to change his name to "Baracken Recording" Obama.

Just think about the 6 1/2 years we've got left with this so-called leader at the helm!

After watching Obama's address, does anyone else get the feeling like this whole Oil Spill Disaster was orchestrated by those wanting to promote alternative energies? Of course, high executives in BP were in the loop and informed long before the disaster happened.

We have a unique situation: a disaster that can be utilised to push forth the agendas of the Pro-Environment, Pro-Carbon Tax, Pro-Climate Change & the Pro-Renewable Energy movements collectively. What are the odds?

Actually, I hadn't thought that. Of course, I completely changed my mind after watching his speech last night. I couldn't believe he had the audacity to use this disaster to push for a fossil fuel and/or carbon tax legislation.

I almost choked when the following came out of his mouth: [this is not verbatim]

"The transition from fossil fuels to clean energy is going to be costly, but necessary. This is something that all Americans can do now, that will benefit everyone. Some say that we can't afford to do this now. I say we can't afford not to."

Here's the thing:

We can't afford it now!

We have to begin the process of switching over to cleaner energy. However, we can't afford a complete switchover paid for by tax increases right now.

Rather, given the economy and lack of jobs, initiatives should be made that encourages companies to produce products supporting clean energy -- such as hybrid cars, solar-powered devices, etc. -- that will create jobs and increase consumer spending -- both important benchmarks to a recovering economy. The auto companies are doing quite well with sales of hybrids, cleaning products are selling more eco-friendly lines, etc. We need to encourage production and sales, not additional taxes.

No jobs are created from raising taxes. Consumer spending does not increase when taxes are raised. Neither of Obama's ideas to ending our dependence on fossil fuel takes care of our economy nor does it help the average American put food on their table. Rather, it's quite the opposite in my opinion.

I was thinking the same thing. Yes, we need to transition to a cleaner energy source. Excessive taxes, rampant unemployment, and other factors cut us short on being financially practical. I'm also pretty sure that they already have deep ties to the next generation of energy. That's why they are pushing home solar systems at astronomical prices, but I'm willing to bet they will gladly finance a $25,000 solar system, or a $40,000 backup generator package, with the punch line being you will need to refi your home or use it as collateral. Very unreliable to us taxpayers in a financial firestorm, with housing bubbles so rampant. They will also try the geothermal energy angle. Good idea, but it only works best if it's on or near a fault line. Natural gas is still no good option, since they will still have to drill to get it.
We won't be able to make a clean break from fossil fuel. It will take time, AND an asserted effort to change our lifestyles. The first step is to just completely bypass the authority of our contaminated government. Obamas speech was just rhetoric to push energy taxes and pre-stage the next wave of debt and profitability of 'new' energy.

Just found this.

It's a fact check on Obama's speech. Interesting is an understatement.

OBAMA: "We will make BP pay for the damage their company has caused and we will do whatever's necessary to help the Gulf Coast and its people recover from this tragedy. ...

THE FACTS: An independent arbiter is no more bound to the government's wishes than an oil company's. In that sense, there is no certainty BP will be forced to make the Gulf economy whole again.......It took 20 years to sort through liability after the Exxon Valdez oil spill in Alaska,.....

OBAMA: "From the very beginning of this crisis, the federal government has been in charge of the largest environmental cleanup effort in our nation's history."

I thought the CEO of BP said that they're responsible for the largest clean-up effort in America's history?

THE FACTS: Early on, the government established a command center and put Coast Guard Adm. Thad Allen in charge of coordinating the overall spill response. But officials also repeatedly have emphasized that BP was "responsible" and they have relied heavily on BP in making decisions from hiring cleanup workers to what oil dispersing chemicals to use.

Here's the link.

Judge for yourselves.

OK, here goes. I know everyone will think I should be wearing my tin-foil hat, but... He said at one point through the speech (and I paraphrase) "We have exhausted all HUMAN efforts and technology and we are now going to put our BEST scientists on this" And, and what about appointing Ray MABUS as director of gulf-redevelopment?

Why Is ATS tilting more and more Martian left brain posting and becoming it's own nemesis... Bring back the Doom and Groom of mountains and less the doom and gloom of the econamy and oil... Here's what I took away from the Oval Office adress. Please note that I am a born and raised Floridian who has lived within 40 miles of the Gulf Coast for 27 of my 32 years of life, spread between Lake Charles, Louisiana, and Tampa, Florida.

The President only cares about this issue because it makes him look incompetent and out of the know. He couldn't care less about the people of the Gulf Coast, in fact I'm sure that behind closed doors he refers to us as 'rednecks' and all other sorts of worn-out cliches and stereotypes. No one on the Gulf is fooled into believing that the goverment is capable of dealing with this in any effecient fashion at all.

First off, had the goverment done it's job and inspected the Deepwater Horizon rig as it was SUPPOSED to, this tragedy could have been diverted and 11 BP employees would still be alive and the Gulf would be clean and beautiful as ever. Greed, bribery, and "buddy-buddy" politics doomed the Gulf.

Secondly, how in the world could the goverment, with any kind of a conscience whatsoever, approve drilling at a depth of a mile without a sure-fire, researched, and confirmed method of being able to stop the flow of oil if a rupture happened? If you can't control it, DON'T DO IT. That's ego and greed in prime form.

Third, very few people who live outside of the Gulf Coast really comprehend the magnitude of what is happening. A few things I think I should point out about this.

-Loss of billions of dollars from the seafood industry. This is absolutely debilitating to the economy. Fishermen, marine mechanics, fisheries, boating, charters, restaurants, suppliers are all effected.
-Loss of billions of dollars from the oil industry. Oil workers, machinists, tanker sailors, refineries... etc.
-Loss of billions in tourism revenue.
-Dropping property values.
-Possible depopulation of the Gulf Coast as people move from the area.
-Untold amounts of methane and other gasses seeping throughout the Gulf. The Gulf's ecosystem and unique balance is ruined, and the further this goes the greater the devastation will become. Not to mention the effects these gases will have on the inhabitants of the Gulf Coast.

I used to get furious by thinking about what has happened, but lately I've realized that the best thing I can do is record/take pictures of what remains of the beautiful places of my childhood so that my son can see what things used to be like, and to volunteer what I can of my time to help with cleanup when the oil approaches my current home.

I was thinking of a way to put this but you have nailed it. There is something very different about him in this speech. He almost looks like he is doing a Saturday Night Live slot.

On an another point the whole religious element is bizarre. Its a very significant mention of God.

I haven't head this before from Obama. This would support a possible influence of RAP as they are very religous.

The other possiblity is that we are being prepared for a second coming or some sort of saviour being presented. You can laugh at this but I have been hearing murmurs of this for the last year or two. This is not from people screaming it from rooftops but very small sublte messages. I think he references it directly at end of speech. From what I have read previously people must ask for the saviour;

"something better awaits us if we summon the courage to reach for it. Tonight we pray for that courage"

eidited to add

I believe they are about to set the ocean on fire now too. How more biblical can you get ?

I knew the whole speech was BS when the first thing out of his mouth was the statement that the government has been in charge from day one.

Then the rest of the speech was full of the same old BS the government has been spotting since he took office.

Yes we need alternatives to oil.

But what he does not tell you is its going to take time and a lot of research to bring new alternatives to oil on line safely and cheaply.

If its not done right the people will pay.

Some alternatives like hydrogen cars are the biggest scams yet.
and yes we will have fuel cell cars just not with hydrogen fuel.

We need a promise keeper, not a promise maker.

He can talk the talk, but he has shown he cannot walk the walk.

He says they are going to pay...well, how do you pay for ruined livlihoods, ruined wetlands, dead animals that may suffer extinction???

I needed to hear what we going to do to keep it from coming to shore...all talk, just another empty suit in my opinion.

What i got out of last nights speech is this....They are easing us into the real fact that this disaster is far beyond our control, you could kind of sense that in his tone.

But he didnt give us to much info not to make a mass panic is why i think he ordered the deployment of the national gaurd from the affected stated. Then as soon as the troops are in place there will be another oval office meeting.

This one will give more gloomy details about toxins or poison,so with troops allready in place he can issue evacuation orders.w/o troops in place if he would have disclosed to much there would have been a mass panic.

I think these oval office things will become more frequent and more scary with time

I'd like a president who actually has some fire in the eyes, head turns slightly red, uses hand gestures...this way I know they are either a good actor or actually care.

Except people might get scared and think he is hitler

Seriously you can't have your cake and eat it too. Either your for big government or your for small government, either your a socialist/capitalist/communist, either your for corruption or your for integrity.

Obama answered AS EXPECTED pro-corruption, pro-small government, pro-captialism! EVERYTHING I HATE and that is why I moved to greece about a decade ago!

ENJOY YOUR CAPITALIST DICTATORSHIP my fellow americans. I still have some sympathy for those affected in gulf region but I cannot stand greed and ignorance.

It's starting to feel like having a POTUS means nothing these days/years.
What is he doing? Nothing! Nothing but spewing meaningless words much like this leak is spewing oil. They're both toxic!
Who cares whose responsible at this juncture??? For that we have a president?

New topic:

Not sure if this has been posted nor do I know if I should start another thread but can someone please tell me what this is? I think the suggestion is a laser beam caused the explosion. And at this point, nothing, I mean NOTHING is shocking anymore. I have become comfortably numb (well, I am not comfortable per se.....)

I have sat back and listened to this speech a few times. I really wanted to make sure I had no misunderstanding or what was being said.

First issue I have with his speech is that on several occasions he refers to this as an "oil spill". Sorry this is not a "spill" a "spill" indicates that a specific amount of oil has escaped it's containment and needs to be cleaned it. Much like a glass of water. If you were to knock over a glass of water you would have a "spill", but what would you call it if water was free flowing from a source like a main water pipe? Well, that is what is called a leak. At this moment we have oil free flowing into the Gulf of Mexico. There is no way to turn it off. That is not a "spill" that is a "leak" and I found his choice of words to be very interesting.

Almost as interesting as this phrase used by The President, "..but make no mistake. We will fight this spill with everything we got, for as long as it takes.."

Sorry but Mr. President, you may very well be on the clock with this one. As you have been "fighting with everything you got" for 60 days now, you have done nothing. You have accomplished nothing. There are more wrongs than rights in this whole situation. You have average citizens who are willing to come to the beaches and do their part to help clean, yet they are kept away. You have had millions upon millions of pounds of hair donated and used to make booms to soak up oil as it comes inland, yet they are turned away. The hair booms not used because "they might sink" which I realize is an enormous concern, after all we wouldn't want hair booms that are being used to soak up oil as it comes on land to sink through solid ground!

The remainder of the speech really appears to be fluff. He babbles about BP paying, he babbles about how "They" will fix everything. Which tells me, "We" will not be permitted to do it. It's a solo job sponsored by the Feds and since "We" already know everything "They" have full control of turns to crap. "We" should expect nothing less for this disaster. "They" couldn't run a Cash for Clunkers program the right way, but suddenly "They" are going to be able to respond to this crisis with no issues, but "We" already know that's a bunch of BS cause "They" have already fumbled this whole thing and have not fixed the problems with the response that already exist.

Of course he than continues on with the real meat and potatoes of the fluff. Finding "clean energy". Carefully listen to him again, because I can promise you what it means is that we will be taxed further in the quest to find this "clean energy" and bring buildings up to a new code standard. In other words, "We" are going to pay, one way or another, "We" are paying for it.

What is most amusing is that he turned this speech that is supposed to be about WHAT we are going to do to fix the problem with this massive leak in the Gulf, but instead he is not letting the "crisis go to waste" and is openly proclaiming that we will be paying for this new direction in policy. There is no real mention of WHAT they are doing in the Gulf to solve this problem, and thhre is a very good reason why. They won't.

What Obama DID say was this, “In the coming days and weeks, [the response] efforts should capture up to 90% of the oil leaking out of the well. This is until the company finishes drilling a relief well later in the summer that is expected to stop the leak completely.”

So there you have it. They will not stop this leak. The goal is to get the relief wells drilled, everything else we see and hear are nothing more than fluff, much like the President's first address to the Nation.
