Thread for President Obama's 6/15/10 Address to the Nation on the Oil Spill

I don't know if there is a thread like this in existence, but, if not, it obviously exists now - right here. Please feel free to use this thread to discuss President Obama's address to the nation concerning the oil spill.

It will be interesting to see if Obama mentions anything that would substantiate any of the conspiracies we are hearing about in this forum. I am sure he will not, but let's watch anyway .

I am certified in "Organizational Change Management." (Just recently got that way.) The premise is that we have "sponsors" of change and we have "change agents" and we have "targets."

Targets prefer to hear things from sponsors, but change agents are the ones doing all the work on both ends.

Obama will say whatever is polished and pretty and without substance to make the targets feel warm and fuzzy and stop questioning the change. The change agents will poll the targets, prepare the speeches, omit any pitfalls or potential problems, and make sure that everything goes off smoothly.

I was a change agent in my departments recent technological upgrade, new building, and move. We polled and polled and found the most common concerns, then we polled the sponsors and found the best answers, then we prepared all the communications and removed anything that might stir more than it settled, and then we handed those communications back off to the sponsors to deliver to the targets.

Get it? Why even watch!

I for one will be watching, even though I do not think he will say a damn thing. Its just posturing at this point in time. He already failed and he knows it. This IS his Katrina. I look forward to see how he will sidestep and shift blame somewhere else.

I've been ticked about the agenda for tonight's speech for two days now. There's 5 items on the agenda and only one of them addresses what they're actually going to do or are doing. The remaining four items are all related to $$$$$$$ !!!

"They", the U.S. government as well as BP, have yet to recognize that the problem is not all about money! I realize that gulf coast residents do want to know about the $$, but seriously, it was $$$ and only $$$ that got us in this situation in the first place.

I don't even know why I'm going to watch tonight, I know it's just going to piss me off even more AND not give me any more information that I don't already have.

THAT is a comparison that works!

Local devastation, cover up, global implications, and even global catastrophe possibilities, decades to fix and clean up, although many people will ignore the danger and stay put and persevere.

Chernobyl is the perfect analogy!

I can’t watch it. The mere thought of “Curious George” behind the desk in the oval office makes me physically ill. I’ll be sure to tune into this thread to learn of any shocking new political developments arising out of this event.

No worries, nothing "shocking" will come from his mouth on national teleprompter night.

I have to admit, I did like his inauguration speech. He is certainly a gifted orator. I might watch just to take some ques for when I decide to run for an office.

About two hours until the big address!

We are at a unique point in US, indeed human, history.

The enormity of what must be addressed and who will be watching, the true costs of failure, and the implications for the future are all unprecedented.

If what he says doesn't shock people, if he trivializes, diminishes, or is less than blunt about the global scale of this disaster and outline the worst-case scenario clearly, his presidency is done.

Events will very soon overtake any attempt to pretend this isn't a global catastrophe thaat will require immediate international effort, and anyone who underplayed the seriousness will lose so much credibility that they will be unable to function effectively from that point on.

He must set a serious but determined and confident tone and acknowledge that things didn't move fast enough at first and some things are now irreparably lost for the next few years.

I sure don't envy the position he's in.

A rock, a hard place, and annihilation.

Tough job.

Think this is why he's President? That statistically speaking they knew a meltdown of something, somewhere would happen?

President Obama to Address BP Oil Spill in Oval Office Speech Tonight

Wrapping up his fourth visit to the Gulf region, President Obama this morning reviewed part of his speech planned for tonight to address the nation about the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. The President plans to deliver his speech at 8:00 EST, to be followed by a press conference by White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs.

President Obama told reporters this morning in Pensacola, Florida that he would talk about the necessity for a more "nimble" response to the spill, as well as the need for BP to pay out claims "quickly and fairly" to compensate victims of the ongoing environmental catastrophe taking place in the Gulf. Obama will discuss how businesses affected by the major spill "need help right now"

The President visited Alabama, Mississippi, and Florida over the last two days before returning to Washington to deliver what will be his first Oval Office address.

I heard about this - and, indeed, the fact that Obama will be making this address in the first place - on the radio by accident this morning. I actually like the bolded part of the above excerpt. If this really pans out, it can save businesses and peoples' economic lives.

Also, this is Obama's first Oval Office address. Are such addresses usually about sad news such as this? I feel badly that his first speech of this sort will be marred by the topic of discussion.

As a side - but very interesting - note, when you type "Obama 6/15 oil address nation" into Google, this thread is the 5th one down! Yay us!

So, I suppose that was a bit incendiary of me, but seriously dear friends in the States do not expect his speech to be anything of value. You will learn how he intends to exploit this crisis to serve his particular elite's goals. Control and more control is what one should expect out of this.

You don't need a pharoah, O USA. Have done with Barackahnaten and his crowd. Cut off their authority and refuse to bow to their demands. For the sake of humanity.

He will say nothing about the real options and no input from the "expert" team he tasked with the fix...old news already.

I would say use a sequenced use of a couple hydrogen bombs to close the hole.

I think it is the most logical and safest way since Nukes are dirty.

Then to clean up 100% organic absorbent that is animal safe. Along with sump pumps on Tankers.

Basically the rich keep getting richer and the poor will be left with a dead ocean while the elite hide in their bunkers....

OBAMA's speech- " there will be HOPE and CHANGE in the gulf and when the CHANGE comes there will be HOPE the we can CHANGE the Catastrophe to a positive light and help the folks in the gulf. We will take BP coprate FAT CAT profits and give them to the people that need the most HOPE. We will start a HOPE fund and bankrupt BP for there GREADY COPRATE ways and thats what i belive with my muslim faith. lets HOPE for CHANGE. god bless you and god bless the united socialist states of amarica."

OBAMA SPEECH, must be an old video because he says, "when the oil reaches louisiana beaches." EXSCUSE ME, the oil has been on the beach for some time now. WHY, are they playing old videos? Pay close attention to what he says.

I agree, apacheman. This is historic and could be a pivotal time in US history. Like Obama or not this will probably be a speech that will be remembered and oft quoted. I hope he takes a firm stand to tighten up the regulations that Bush Jr. unscrewed and keep us safe from both environmental catastrophes and corporate predators - they do go hand in hand it seems to me.

I hope he has the guts to address some of the latest data and public health concerns. I hope he will call to increase funding to monitoring of the air quality as well as the water in the Gulf and all affected States (which could be quite a few beyond just the coastal States).
