How did a statue made out of stone burn? Am I missing something?
It obviously wasn't made of stone...you can see the structural framing in the after picture...

But that...has to be the single most funny thing I've ever seen...

Well, most materials used to build statues generally tend to be quite heavy and thus need a frame. Having been an art student I know that generally statues if not made of stone, are made from other materials considered non-flammable and stone-like.

Going by the size of it I would say it would have been a somewhat lighter material but your explanation that it having a frame makes it "obvious" why it burnt down is sorely lacking.

I've just read that it's the epoxy in fibreglass that is flammable, not the material itself.

Despite the flammable nature of the materials I still think it's just a tiny bit odd though.

The loss of "Touchdown Jesus" is making headlines worldwide:

People around the world are taking what happened about 6 hours ago very seriously.

I know that it is wrong for me to take such joy in this, but you have know idea just exactly how much I have hated that statue. Diligent research has brought this:

Heh. I've seen that Statue quite a few times from the highway being from Dayton myself. So...just for all those other Ohioans out there....I gotta say..... " O - H" ......

You know....cause Jesus is a Buckeye fan too and all...... He hates Michigan as much as we do.....

Lolz!
This has really made my day!
Stupid jesus freaks building a eyesore, only to have an 'act of god' bring it down....
Makes you wonder....

Or does it?

The GODSOURCE Maybe saw idol worship as a bad thing.
Or just maybe the GODSOURCE is a normal person like everyone here enjoying the destruction of a hideous statue

Big Butter Jesus got fried? Wow! Would that be listed as an act of god on their insurance? I love the irony in this.

A far more clear picture of the aftermath.

To paraphrase that famous line from The Magnificent Seven:

God's Sidekick: "Great shooting, God. You hit Jesus, dead on!"

God: "That was lousy shooting. I was aiming for the church."

Hey, I didn't know they had a Burning Man festival in Dayton. The remaining skeleton reminds me of the famous burning desert figure.

I found this little ditty from the source to be rather amusing.

“I can’t believe Jesus was struck,” said his brother, who noted the giant Hustler Hollywood sign for the adult store across the street was untouched. “It’s the last thing I expected to happen.”

Larry Flynt must be getting a good laugh out of this.

I totally agree, what a hideous Statue!

What was it meant to represent?

Here you have Jesus, waist deep in water looking up at the Sky....... Oh I get it now, He's looking up saying "Hey Dad, why did you take away my powers?
I can't walk on Water now....... can't you see I'm trying to escape the Loony bin"

What is that Blue arch to the right in this pic? It looks like some bizarre Tesla creation. I think this fire can now be considered suspicious.

That is a neon sign for the church. Trust me when I saw this is like no Christian church you have ever seen.

the original looked to me like
a titan in the flood
why god why?
are we not your children, half gos half men?

reminds me of the look
on Ripley's half alien baby's face
as she caused it to get sucked out of
the hole in the side of the space craft
in Alien 4

And might I say just how much I love YouTube when chasing a story that develops and you just really need a video. Only 11 seconds, hopefully there will be more uploaded later today. And the commentary.

it only appeared as stone...

here at the beach there are scores of putt-putt golf courses and several have volcano themes... the metal framing, the wire mesh act as a base to construct these pretty natural looking mountains, or caves, or dinosaurs

i smell what we locals call 'jewish lightning' striking the icon,
which results in a insurance claim & settlement after the tourist season is over...
here in myrtle beach there's always a restaurant or beachwear shop with skads & oodles of stock merchandise that is lost in these 'coincidental' fires ... always in Nov-Jan, in the off season

The statue didn't resemble Yeshua in the slightest, so why would God not strike it down?
