Let's see, that calculates out to almost $225,000 per year...nearly a quarter of a million dollars. And that's before heating, air-conditioning, water, electric, staff salaries, etc.

www.rollcall.com...

The article states:

"Last fall, Speaker Nancy Pelosi moved her district office into the new federal building in San Francisco. The move quadrupled the rent she pays, and her new $18,736 monthly bill is almost double the next-highest rental paid by a Member of the House.

Well, it's nice to see that politicians are taking such good care of the hard-earned money you turned over to them in the form of taxes...

Hopefully, Pelosi is one of the electoral casualties this fall.

I saw a video of her saying something crazy like people can just give up their jobs now to spend their time practising to become musicians/artists with the healthcare in place. She obviously has no regard for taxpayers money, which is not really the kind of thing you want, especially when there's a economic crisis underway.

I wonder what kind of lease they had to sign for this. Part of the justification given for the added expense was that she is the House Speaker.

So, if the Republicans win in November and she has to take a back seat...is she going to downgrade her digs? Ha Ha. I doubt it.

What happens if she loses her own election, and is out on the street? Do taxpayers have to keep paying for her luxury suite for the next five years or something?

same abuse of power all over the world.

In the UK we had a government official claim expenses for porn films her husband watched!

They wonder why we are going broke?!?

Artists can actually make a really good salary. Who do you think makes all the games and special effects for movies?

Obviously the people of San Fran dont mind since they keep voting her back into office. Im sure this isnt her first waste of tax payer money. Seems the voters really just dont care

Of course you are right. People just do not seem to make the connection between excessive Government spending, like this, and their own pockets books.

So there will be little or no reaction.

If she had gone door to door telling people they had to cough up $50 or $100 so that she could move downtown into her new spread...that is, it was mandatory, not a voluntary donation...I think she would be getting a whole different reaction to this.

In the "mark my words" department, watch now how other Politicians use this new benchmark to justify upgrading their District offices..."My new office is only costing taxpayers, $14,800 per month, way less than Pelosi's."

Transferring into a Federally owned property is the best move that all Congresspersons can do.

Typically, Government always pays more in rent then say, the carpet cleaning company who moved into say, and older structure.

All Congresspeople's offices are financed by public tax dollars so stop.

Hook - Line - Sinker - SUNK!

According to about.com the speaker of the house makes $223,500 annually.

Opensecrets.org reports Pelosi has $374,869 on-hand for her campaign contributions as of May 19.

The office is in a federal building so the rent gets paid to the GSA, as the article notes:

When Members have their offices in federal buildings, as Pelosi does, the payments are made to the General Services Administration, which is the government’s property manager.

So the money is going straight back into the government.

Not being a tax professional I wonder if she can write the expense off as it pertains to the cost of her profession.

- Under Federal Election and Campaign Fianance Law no money that sits in a campaign account may be spent on anything but the campaign.

- Only correct if the building in question is fully owned and operated by Government. If privately held the money is paid to the property owner.

Not being a tax professional I wonder if she can write the expense off as it pertains to the cost of her profession.
-The name on the lease is not that of the Member of Congress but the (in this case) United States House Of Representatives! As the individual legislative body as well as the Federal Government must make sure that certain and specific security items are locked down. Hence why you will never see Congressional office placed in the middle of nowhere or in a high crime area.

Answered in quote. Please stop with this nonsense. Quit attacking Pelosi and Obama nd please for the sake of humanity get back to focusing on the ACTUAL and not the precieved enemeies of Amercia. My, my how short the average attention span is.
