Singer, sausage businessman Jimmy Dean dies at 81

RICHMOND, Va. – Jimmy Dean, a country music legend for his smash hit about a workingman hero, "Big Bad John," and an entrepreneur known for his sausage brand, has died. He was 81.

His wife, Donna Meade Dean, says her husband died at 7:54 p.m. Sunday at their Henrico County, Va., home, south of Richmond.

She tells The Associated Press that he had some health problems but was still functioning well, so his death came as a shock.

Born in 1928, Dean was raised in poverty in Plainview, Texas, and dropped out of high school after the ninth grade. But he went on to a successful entertain

Monday will be a sad day for fans of country music legend

Jimmy Dean, who passed away unexpectedly Sunday night at

his home in Henrico County, Va. His wife said Jimmy had some

health problems but nothing major and was still able to function

well. Jimmy best known in the 50's through 60's as a successful

country music singer/song writer, TV host, actor, and businessman went

on to start the Jimmy Dean Meat Company in 1969.

well I'm officially one of "those" people now. I thought Jimmy Dean died about 1995 or '96. I remember going "oh, I always thought those sausages were named after James Dean" when he "died the first time.

anyhow, R.I.P. JD, I'll eat some sausage links in your memory

one thing I haven't seen mentioned here yet
was his acting ability. He was also an actor.

One of my favorite roles he played was as
Willard White in the James Bond movie
"Diamonds are forever". Not bad for a
man that never graduated high school.

My heart goes out to the family as
Jimmy truly was an American Icon.
