i think this is quite normal. and is part of the process to bring more trust between countries.

I dont know if you guys have noticed, but russia and the usa, have been trying hard patching things up. this is a good thing.

we dock in all kinds of ports around the world, this just shows that japan and russia are no longer our enemies. and when china would not allow us to dock in their port during a strom it shows we are getting a new enemy. you should read between the lines some tiem!

Um...yeah, that was pretty much the entire point of my post. Not sure why you are explaining this to me again, that was the point I was trying to make.

This is not the first time Russian Navy ships have visited the U.S. Also, why is everyone jumping all over San Francisco for this happening? The decision to allow or not allow the warships of various countries to call at our ports is not up to the cities themselves, but up to the U.S. military and the State Department. That's a matter of international relations, mixed with defense concerns. Don't like it, okay, blame the U.S. government, but the local cities are not too involved in such a decision.

I have personal eyewitness confirmation of this visit today from a friend visiting San Fran, they are there, and it's not on anything but local news.

I wonder what kind of armament the salvage tug boasts. .

This is actually pretty common in S.F., and I would guess most large port cities. I used to work in the North Beach (Brodway and Columbus.. good times!) district in S.F. You would always see Navy troops from various countries on their shore leave for the night. You would see them walking around in smaller and larger groups, usually in uniform. They were never any trouble and usually tipped more than most of your tourist/club/bar goers at the few bars that I either worked security, bartended and managed. Nothing to see here folks, move along.

Why is it all at one time we are having all these reports of foreign troops and war ships landing and docking in us ports and bases. whats going on. what are they getting ready for?

When the powers that be want to be taken over they leave the back

doors open and the side doors and call them visitors. Do you really

feel safe in your own country?

Do you realize that this administration from day one could of waved

the Jones act and let foreign skimmers and vessels in the Gulf waters

to have immediately started capturing vast amounts of oil that have

and will continue landing on our beaches.

This War on Oil that obama talks about is real and the oil is winning it

has invaded our beaches and waters like a plaque on America. What

is obama's plan of action? Could it be to play golf and let the world go

away and get it off of my shoulders. ^Y^

Oh, he's there to meet the leader of the United States, the CEO of "Google', and Gov. Arnie.....

"President Dmitry Medvedev will visit Silicon Valley before the White House in a signal that he is more keen on doing business than talking politics during a visit to the United States this week, his economic aide Arkady Dvorkovich said Monday".

The thread does remind me of when the U.S War Ships has visited Australia. (a few times). With those war ships docked at S'F, what is 'TPTB' are thinking of doing? War? With who? Plus with that when other countries are having "neighbouring problems" it does seem like a nother world war is soon to be here type. If any more war ships does "visit" S'F and/or any other port in the U.S... just be careful, stock up on the survival foods and other survival stuff... and, ofcourse, make sure you(s) DO stock up on ammo!

It may be common for foreign military ships to come to port on our shores, but why oh why does it link their being here to a visit from the Russian President?

Edit: because I read it wrong. =P

Just a little info i think may be relative, i served in the aussie navy and in 1990 visited Penang for the international fleet review to comemorate Malaysias 25th naval aniversary. 25 nations were represented including the russians, the first time US and a Russian vessel were together in the same port to my understanding. Whats interesting is that all countries had freedom to interact after the royal reveiw except the russians, they were in groups of 5 or 6 accompanied by a commissioned officer and their leave was cancelled to be back on board by 18:00. My point is in a time of peace in a country such as Malaysia they had no freedom or free will because of the US presence. What makes any of you think they are coming to your west coast in a vessel with possible nuclear capabilities for a freindly visit all of a sudden?

I love SF, They dont let are own U.S warships in the port (only on fleet week) but will welcome other countrys to park there nuke armed ships in port. Great City! There should not be any other countrys ships in our port with out a U.S escort.

Even if the Russian cruiser were to have a full complement of nuclear weapons on board- it wouldn't change a thing. You see, there are these things called "submarines" and "ICBM's" which are pointed at our cities CONSTANTLY. Likewise, we (Americans) have our own submarines and ICBMs pointed at Russian cities- CONSTANTLY. Mutually assured destruction is still the name of the game. It's not like having a ship with nuclear capability in San Fran's port gives the Russians any sort of strategic advantage. Having Russia's ship in the port actually makes it LESS likely that they would try to nuke the city, because they wouldn't want to nuke their own, very expensive, capital warship. You don't do suicide bombings with capital ships.

I beg to differ. There is still a U.S. Coast Guard base on Yerba Buena Island, which they still run a lot of helicopters and ships out of. You will always see the USCG heli's flying all over the bay, usually escorting ships on their way in and out of the area, and always out during sporting events. I remember a few years back they upgraded their fleet of helicopters to include a few gunships as well. I will have to dig around to see if i can find a news report on that.

And still an older carrier over in the port of oakland.

for a little more info on S.F. and the military (or lack there of).

www.globalsecurity.org...

p.s. Globalsecurity is an awesome site for info on military matters. If that is something you are interested in, this site is a must see and a great reference.
