White House official: 'Organized labor just flushed $10 million down the toilet'

A senior White House official just called me with a very pointed message for the administration's sometime allies in organized labor, who invested heavily in beating Blanche Lincoln, Obama's candidate, in Arkansas.

"Organized labor just flushed $10 million of their members' money down the toilet on a pointless exercise," the official said. "If even half that total had been well-targeted and applied in key House races across this country, that could have made a real difference in November."

Lincoln relied heavily both on Obama's endorsement, which she advertised relentlessly on radio and in the mail, and on the backing of former President Bill Clinton, who backed her to the hilt.

Lincoln foe Bill Halter had the unstinting support of the AFL-CIO, SEIU, AFSCME and other major unions. And labor officials Tuesday evening were already working to spin the narrow loss of their candidate, Bill Halter, as a moral victory, but the cost in money and in the goodwill of the White House may be a steep price to pay for a near miss.

AFL to White House: 'Labor isn't an arm of the Democratic Party

The major labor federation AFL-CIO took sharp objection tonight to a White House official's assessment that they'd "flushed $10 million of their members' money down the toilet" in the "pointless exercise" of supporting the failed bid of Bill Halter to unseat Sen. Blanche Lincoln.

"If that's their take on this, then they severely misread how the electorate feels and how we're running our political program. When we say we're only going to support elected officials who support our issues," said AFL-CIO spokesman Eddie Vale. "When they say we should have targeted our money among some key house races among Blue Dog Democrats — that ain't happening."

"Labor isn't an arm of the Democratic Party," Vale said. "It exists to support working families. And that's what we said tonight, and that's what we're gong to keep saying."

Ever hear of the old saying, "Don't bite the hand that feeds you?" Well mister president, you just chopped their hands off.

How much longer will Labor and Progressives remain silent while you corporatize this country. You have opposed every progressive candidate and have endorsed every corporate establishment candidate. Then he have the guts to come out and say this!?

Maybe you forgot, you must have a very short memory. The Progressives and Labor put you in office in 2006 and 2008, they gave you the House, Senate and Presidency. And this is what we get? # you Obama, and # the entire Democratic Party!

if you keep this crap up you will learn a dire lesson in 2012. You think you have to be afraid of Republicans since you have ruined our country as bad as the last Neocon, now you need to worry about Democrats too. You think you will have a clear primary, well keep this up and you won’t. Progressives and Labor will put out their own candidate to challenge you in the Democratic Primaries in 2012 and ask LBJ what it's like taking on the left, he dropped out. Ask Jimmy Carter what it is like taking on the left, his ass nearly lost, but Reagan finished him off.

You will be a Carter presidency and an LBJ primary if you don't change course. The left has already attacked Nancy Pelosi, Mr. Obama, you're next.

Yup, the radical left is up in arms against the corporatist Dems, all across the board. The woman who was berating Pelosi the other day was a member of Code Pink. In the view of the radical left, Obama has not done enough to bring about the radical socialist changes that they want. To be honest, I am as leery of the radical left as I am of the corporate/banking demagogues. A Pox upon both their houses.

We need to return to the founding principles upon which this nation was founded--not give in to either radical socialism or establishment fascism, both of which lead to totalitarian control by the elite social engineers and serfdom for the masses.

It was so nice not to get an email from moveon.org today.

I guess they were to depressed to do anything today!
