BP is being accused of trying to manipulate the search results on sites like Google and Yahoo, as it attempts to salvage its battered image following the oil slick in the Gulf of Mexico.

The company is purchasing terms such as “oil spill”, “Deepwater Horizon” and “Gulf of Mexico”, so that when a user types these words into the search engines, the results prominently feature a “sponsored link” to BP’s official page on its response to the spill.

Critics have described BP’s move as unethical. Maureen Mackey, a writer on the Fiscal Times, an online news site, said: “W

Why exactly do we have a foreign company drilling for oil off our shores anyway?? It is not like they care what happens to this country. All they want is our resources.

Drilling in the United States needs to be restricted to American companies.

The BP corporation is playing massive coverup and spinning this in the media as best as they can. This disaster is probably far worse than any in the media has acknowledged.

Funny, Google's Motto is ' Don't Be Evil'. Why are they allowing BP to do such things in the first place.

We need to look at them as well.

Someone beat me to it. I do not understand why it did not show up when I did a search though.

Sorry about that.

Different titles, different sources, even just a few different words can throw off a search, not to mention the unnerving fact that while you're composing a news submission, someone else might be doing the same -- and beat you by a few minutes.

It's maddening, but I don't think anyone has come up with a better system yet, so we do our best (don't tell anyone, but it happens to mods, too).

Thus there's always a risk when submitting news, but thanks for taking that risk, because keeping the ATS community informed is a noble endeavor and well worth it.
