As much as I hate to agree with Annee, circumcision is not a feminist issue, and it is far from normal.

They estimate that 70% of the global male population is uncircumcised.

en.wikipedia.org...
www.fathermag.com...

You can ignore the anti feminism parts in this article, as outlawing female genital mutilation is different than condoning male genital mutilation.

This is one area where we as men have to stand up to doctors and say no!

Doctors openly admit that the practice is continued for profit, and that should tell you a lot about the practice.

Thanks peck.

I just disagree that all doctors act on profit. Maybe its naive and I just want to believe there are still ethical doctors in the world.

At least the laws have been changed - it is not an automatic procedure. The parents have to make the choice.

But there are fathers making the choice too. With percentages so high - it can not be woman alone making the decision to circumcise.

Well, although I personally feel that the decision whether or not to be circumcised should be left up to the male in question, when he is old enough to make that decision, it actually does provide some medical benefit.

www1.voanews.com...

In two studies of about 5,500 HIV-negative males in Uganda, researchers found that circumcision reduced the infection rate of genital herpes by 35 percent, compared to men who were not circumcised. The research also demonstrated the procedure reduced the risk of human papillomavirus transmission by 28 percent.

Thomas Quinn of the U.S. National Institutes of Health led the research, which confirms other smaller studies.

Quinn says, because circumcision reduces the risk of HIV transmission, researchers hoped it might do the same for HPV and genital herpes. "You know, when the results were all in, we were pleasantly surprised that there was a significant reduction for both of those viruses," he said.

Researchers found that circumcision did not significantly reduce the risk of syphilis, another common venereal disease.

The tradition probably arose in the Jews because they were having some serious issues with STDs and some smart guy figured out if you did that it helped curb the spread and then told everyone "God" said to do it.

However, this is the modern age, and you can wrap your little man in a raincoat religiously rather than cut off his muffler, if you so choose. And because there really does seem to be some lack of sensitivity in those circumcised, I think it should, (And it should be obvious that this is so) be the owner of that little bit of flesh's choice, when he is old enough to make that decision.

As much as that study claims to have found, they have excluded one very critical factor that can not be ignored.

Cleanliness!

The study was performed on a sample group from a country that one of the lowest levels of hygiene.

If you have a natural (my preferred term for uncut) penis it must be kept clean. If proper hygiene is not followed it can and will allow a whole host of problems to occur.

www.cirp.org... <- they tell it better than I can.

If the study had addressed that, I would have found it far more informative.

Some researchers believe that circumcision was started to prevent these issues in the first place, but with knowledge of hygiene becoming widespread, all of the problems associated with a natural penis can be avoided.

To me circumcision is much like feminism, at one time it was necessary, but that time has come and gone.

As per my earlier post, I agree. Just because something served a purpose at one time is no justification for keeping it running indefinitely.

Thats the problem with "argument to tradition," in general.

en.wikipedia.org...

Appeal to tradition, also known as proof from tradition,[1] appeal to common practice, argumentum ad antiquitatem, false induction, or the "is/ought" fallacy,[2] is a common logical fallacy in which a thesis is deemed correct on the basis that it correlates with some past or present tradition. The appeal takes the form of "this is right because we've always done it this way."[3]

An appeal to tradition essentially makes two assumptions:

* The old way of thinking was proven correct when introduced. In actuality this may be false — the tradition might be entirely based on incorrect grounds.
* The past justifications for the tradition are still valid at present. In cases where circumstances have changed, this assumption may be false.

In order to maintain a just society, we need to be constantly re-evaluating our traditions in light of newer information and technology. We supposedly are intelligent animals, and repeating behaviors mindlessly without considering their necessity seems to me to be the antithesis of intelligence.

Women deserve equal rights...

The only problem I have in society really with women/men is in the court systems.

Men used to take 0 responsibility so they made a law to rightfully protect women.

As they should have..

This is now being abused and dumbly enforced in courts...

I hear countless stories of wife cheats on husband so husband wants divorce and wife still gets children and alimony ?

Like what really ?

It's pretty much ok for women to cheat but if a man does it, he must pay for year and lose almost everything.

If a women cheats, she still gets half and the kids and the man loses almost everything.

THat is F'ed up and I dont' respect a single women who takes advantage of that.

That being said, both men and women do equally F*ed up things and neither deserves any negative treatment.

Back to op.

The changes in how men are viewed in society have come somewhat because of women in power and them being able to influence culture like men have done.

Some changes we need to just get used to .....

The whole men being more groomed is a good thing guys......we must admit that...

but there are just way to many individual specific things that would need to change for everything to be perfect.

ahh...but once you get married it's like, hey you pay for dinner, I'll pay for the electricity so the stove will cook it.....and then we'll use the rest of our money to pay the mortgage, the car payment, and all those other meddlesome bills that are making our lives meaningless and miserable!!!

most of the time when me and my husband eat out, I am the one slapping out the credit card......or paying the cash....
after all, we are married, it is all OUR MONEY!!!

at least it is untill we start sending it out to the the bank, electric company, car loan, ect....

by the time we get done with that, well, there isn't enough left to argue over who should do what with it....

You reminded me of this passage in a poem.
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

Maybe it's time people stopped looking through their tiny keyholes at the world and looked at a bigger picture. This type of discussion is pointless. What kind of women and men are you referring to? What country do they live in? do they have religion? So many factors, so little brain space.

Honestly! Serious, liberating feminism has only been around for 50 years ( not including the waves and short spats of feminism that came before) and already the men are shouting conspiracy? Did you know that the classification of rape is different in every country around the world. Where I live all rape cases are handled by female police officers, even the male rape cases, because the male officers don't want to deal with it. Rapists walk free everyday. In London only 6% of the cases reported make it to court. The other 94% walk free to rape again. What about domestic abuse and the millions of single mothers out there, or has that dissapeared as well?

But that's all fine because women are oh so equal, aren't they? What fantasy land do you live in cause it's sounds really nice, can me and all my lady friends come live there?

I guess it must be nice to live in a white man's body and have the world on a plate as it has been throughout history. No man can stand up and say, all's fair, things are equal now...c'mon, they are NOT EQUAL. I don't need to show links and facts and statistics to prove my point because I live in the real world and see the real way that men treat women. My wish for the world would be to see a new wave of women who are strong and smart and can end the destructive path that MEN have set the world on. To bad their aren't that many around. The world would be a much better place.
