Environmentally yes. However, it has not displaced or directly harmed anyone to the tune of the Katrina disaster.

I mentioned there are huge longterm consequences. They include wildlife, the environment, and jobs. You could even mention real estate.

However, the oil spill did not create a situation that floored housing 10's of thousands of people, and fill up a DOMED sports arena.

The types of devastation are completely different, and comparing a presidential response to two completely different natural disasters is the stupidest thing on ATS.

You do not seem to be able to logically comprehend the impact each disaster has had on the human population in each location.

Katrina was far worse immediately and in the short term.

The long term devastation of the oil spill may be far worse. However the presidential response has had no bearing on a solution to the problem in regards to the short term needs of an American citizen.

Which is why I refer to the term "national disaster" vs. "natural disaster".

And if you read the ABC article in detail, including the poll results, it clearly makes a distinction as to how people felt about the "handling" of each matter by the respective Presidents.

Given the amount of power and control that Republicans have within the oil industry, you would see a much more agressive action taking place, if Republicans vs. Democrats were in power. BP knows that, and is taking advantage of same. The Republican stance would have been much quicker, much stronger, if for no other reason than it is making the rest of the oil industry look bad, and potentially effecting future drilling, especially in the area of offshore wells; and after all, everyone seems to look after their own interests now don't they? So yes, in
this instance, Republican control would have been beneficial. And as an independent myself for more than 15 years, I have always looked at the person who I believe is the most qualified for the position to handle the job, not the party they are affiliated with.

If Obama was trying to show that he has an agressive handle on this matter, he could call in some of the best oil men and oil women in Texas, and other oil producing states, to help brainstorm this thing to get it fixed, even if they are hard core Republicans; and let that effort be known, instead of relying on government bureaucrats, and BP bureaucrats to handle the matter, which is really not working; even
more consideration should be given to this idea since BP was responsible for the botched handling, at least initially, in the Exxon Valdez spill. You get people involved whose pocketbook can be effected in the future in a negative manner, and they will find a way to quickly resolve this situation; works nearly every time.

What Obama did do was make a speech saying that even if it doesn't look like it, he is running the show.

I would not have advised him to take credit for such a meager show of force, or the shoddily run(BP)leak repair.

Wouldn't a cleanup not commence once the oil leak is capped, and the damage has been done?

There is almost no precedent to compare the oil spill too, and when Kevin Costner starts being mentioned as having a solution you know we are in trouble.

Blame should be focused on BP, and they should be 100% responsible for any cost incurred in anything done to clean this mess up. The uproar should not be towards each other or TPOS, but towards the company who did the damage.

Obama is half white and half black, and the population is 12% black.

Unless you live on the gulf coast.

And this thing could follow the gulf stream halfway up the eastern seaboard. Many people are being harmed by this. Entire industry's are effected, not to mention the tourist industry. Many other businesses rely on those industry's.

Now there's double digit unemployment for as far as the eye can see.
And millions of gallons of oil, lots of dead birds, turtles, fish, and at least 29 dolphins and counting. And this thing is supposed to continue until August. And if they say August, it's more likely to be Christmas.

This spill is going to effect the entire US economy.

It's too bad people cannot differentiate between immediate direct harm, and potential harm or indirect harm.

That would justify not evacuating New Orleans before Katrina hit.

I don't think we want to wait until it is all over before we do something.

Other than talking the oil to death, that seems to be Obama's plan!

Please dear OP and Posters. Are you pro-fox? are you pro-republican? are you joking?

Want (fuc*) Palin? Make her for president and die like an republican. You OP and Posters never gave Obama a chance, and some of you seem to be racists.

I don't like em both by the way - because they are "might-men", a real good person needs and wants no might.

Well, I am just waiting to see if Obama 'might' do something.

I am not surprised at all at this point with Obama's inaction on this matter, after watching his attention being focused on fixing things that are hardly broken. His fixes add to a bulging budget deficit that is our worst immediate problem of all.

If you are going to blow a trillion dollars, at least spend it on a real problem, like billions of gallons of oil in the Gulf of Mexico!

What does Palin have to do with the oil spill anyway?

The OP compares the Katrina response, which was considered an all-time greatest screw-up in history to the apparently GREATER screw-up that is going on now.

If Obama doesn't like that, maybe he should get off 'vacation mode' , drop his golf club and DO SOMETHING!

If Obama APOLOGISTS don't like it, maybe they SHOULD DROP THE RACE CARD, and tell their hero to do something!

I saw one post that was race connected, does that make everyone who dislikes Obama's executive decisions (or lack of) a racist?

I really am not pleased with the situation in the gulf, but frankly until women, children and the elderly are dying in the streets due to basic dehydration and heat stroke you can not compare the two. To do so does a disservice to all those who experienced the massive suffering that was new orleans after the levies broke.

Air dropping supplies such as food, bottled water and other basic necessities into a city that for all purposes had fallen into a nightmare we can not even fathom does not compare to not being able to get a well capped that is nearly a mile below the surface.

I suppose though he should just swim down there and cap it himself.
He is not putting on a good enough show of force, and I get that, I am furious with the situation, truly. But seriously they do not compare.

Oh this is rich.... Cris Matthews is now blaming the oil spill on Dick Cheney. He's calling it Dick Cheney's oil spill. Give me a break. They'll say anything in order to deflect blame, and people will believe it. They're still blaming the Bush administration for everything. Watch it backfire on them in November. They are also calling the Tea Party an awesome force referring to it as the new-right. I bet that Chris and some of his tea bagging buddies wished they hadn't insulted them now. So for now, the scapegoats will be Bush, Cheney, and BP........and not necessarily in that order.

Yeah, because we all know that "independents" are immune from special interests, self interests, and corruption.

Wise up!

Thanks anon. I like to inject a little humor into my posts when I can. There's way to much hate on this site. Some of my best posts were censored. I'm new here and still testing the limits. I change avitars to match the subject. I used Ak'madinnerjacket on an Iran-escort thread. But it worked on this one to.

I think the president bears the ultimate resposibility for any major disaster.
